As if the shootings in aurora were not bad enough, some new wing nut just shot up a temple full of Sikhs.

I heard about that today. I think I read that it was racially motivated as well. It is a damn shame.

This is just ridiculous. What I hate is how the media and government allow certain groups of people to become hate targets.. it's a way of displacing the public's anger somewhere else and hiding things. No wonder whackos go and shoot up people in racially motivated attacks. I'm not saying it's the case here because some people are just that way anyway.. but a lot of the hatred between races is media and government fuelled.

Ben, we as normal peace loving humans, can't do anything about it sad.gif I lost all hope and I don't think there's hope left to stop those racists.

It happens everywhere, where there is cultural and racial diversity, these things will happen. sad.gif Saddening situation.

The media in the US constantly perpetuates an image of Muslims - "Beard + turban = crazy, beard + turban = crazy, beard + turban = crazy" They will show a scene of destruction, then segue immediately into a scene of bearded Muslims protesting and burning the American flag. This has been taking place for decades. Combine this with the poor education many Americans receive, firebrand right wing radio commentary, and you get hateful people that are extremely ignorant and can't tell the difference between a Muslim and a Sikh.

Yeah, the media across the board has become a MAJOR problem in the US and the main source for race and political strife. No more reporting news, now they've gone to creating it themselves.

However I do disagree with the "firebrand right wing radio" being the main source of all of this hate and ignorance. It's such a minor portion of our society that listens to that stuff and same for left wing radio. I wouldn't consider Air America to be a station that preaches togetherness, or Rachel Maddow, or Keith Olberman, or Bill Maher. Point is, along with these people, you have Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, etc that make a living pitting people/races/religions against each other and it is having a devastating impact across the board.

That's how I see it in America, not sure what the mood is around the rest of the world but it is definitely nice to come to a place like this and escape all of the garbage that we're consumed with everyday.

Well you can and there are plenty of examples where people have opposed racism (and sexism and totalitarian states and so on) in different societies. To do/say nothing though is a form of quiescence that racists etc like. It both lets them assume that they speak for us all, fails to question their 'logic' and offers no alternative to those undecided. However I do accept that it may seem difficult for an individual to see how they may have a positive impact in the face of such bigotry.

It makes me sad to imagine how terrifying it would be for those people who experience a massacre like that first hand.

Not to mention the Mosque that was burned down. That was the second(and last) count of arson on that building this month.

Worst of all the idiot couldn't even get his "hate" right. He evidently thought he was shoot muslims, but nope. It was a SIKH temple so these were not Muslims at all but a peaceful, religious. helpful group of folks who just happened to be to close to this wack job.

This kind of thing doesn't happen in Georgia for a reason. (So far) we have "concealed carry" permits here and they are not hard to get. So on any given bus/train, movie plex, about half the people are armed depending where you go. Ga law prohibits gun carry in church, bars, the state legislature, etc. In other words, places you really should not be armed for.

But most public places are fine unless posted. We have (wait for it.)

88.8 GUNS PER 100 PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES

This does sound crazy. We have about twice the number of guns per capita as YEMEN which is an active war zone with zero govt.

Our 'Gun Culture" is pervasive, so getting 200 MILLION guns off the street would be an uphill battle at best.

But the problem isn't law abiding, tax payers, with guns. It's these WACK JOBS doing crazy stuff. If we can't get rid of the guns, we should install metal detectors at the entrance and exit of any place where people gather. Not fool proof, but at the movie theatre or church, when the BEEEP goes off, the security gets woken up, and people can scatter.

In my opinion the matter is delicate, but in most cases, good control can detect trouble in due time.

It is the same in Texas. It seems that in states where CCW's are easier to get, gun violence, and crime in general, is remarkably lower.

After all, who would rob a bank knowing that every person in it could be packing heat? A single person's threats would not scare multiple armed citizens.

Very delicate in deed. I'm all for having strong gun laws. Didn't help them in Norway though, where the laws are perhaps too strict. That nut job killed 77 people before anyone with a firearm got within shooting range of him. Then they let him surrender?

Yup smile.gif There's that!

I'm guessing that the rule: 'If you prohibit something, it'll be even more attractive' is pretty accurate in this case?
