But I stuck with it and eventually began to understand and enjoy the series. Two books that really helped me with understanding are Tolkien's Complete Guide to Middle Earth by Robert Foster, and The Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad. Both these help in knowing who's who among the characters and understanding the maps and geography of Middle Earth.
