GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Your Backing & Our Mix Ii - Collab

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 18 2020, 03:24 PM

Hello friends!! Welcome to the second "Your Backing, Our Mix" Collab!!

Our student Phil66 suggested to go for a Zeppelin style backing, and Cael composed a great track! I've recorded it and added a metal outro. Now it's your time to record whatever you'd like over it! biggrin.gif

This is the full backing:  Your_Backing_Collab_2__Full_backing_.mp3 ( 3.35MB ) : 1036

And here I've divided it in 4 sections so you can jam over your favorite part (You can jam over all of them too!):

Part 1:  Your_Backing_Collab_2__Part_1_.mp3 ( 723.81K ) : 872

Part 2:  Your_Backing_Collab_2__Part_2_flute_.mp3 ( 723.81K ) : 882

Part 3:  Your_Backing_Collab_2__Part_3_second_verse_.mp3 ( 723.81K ) : 913

Part 4:  Your_Backing_Collab_2__Part_4_Metal_.mp3 ( 1.41MB ) : 920

Tempo: 70 bpm

Key: B minor

DEADLINE: January 3rd

I'm in, still wondering if it's worth extending the chord at the end of part four to allow an ethereal fadeout?

Cheers

Great Phil!! Yes, I was thinking on working on structure once we have the takes. It always depends on the material we get. My idea is to repeat intro in the end with a more ambient feel. However, I've prepared a one chord option so maybe we get cool takes over it:

Awesome!! Count me in smile.gif It's in my fave key as well!

Very inspiring take mate, awesome to see you in here πŸ‘Š

Here is a very rough mix of a vocal idea. The theme of the lyrics start dark but get brighter. I think this is a journey many people can relate to.

 kris_vox_mix.mp3 ( 3.42MB ) : 411

In the morning
There is mourning
Cause I live all by myself (whisper: by myself)

In the morning
There is mourning
Cause I’ll die all by myself (whisper: by myself)

And I fought a battle that no one could have won ( I know won’t)

A feather, is what I am
A feather, I’ll fly away
A feather, to you
A feather, my weight in gold

Never do we give
Never do we give in
We don’t give a damn
We won’t cast the spell

I will never cave
I won’t cast the blame
Never I give in
to the pitfalls of sin

It’s all coming to an end
You can bet your life that I won’t bend

@ Gab - here are the isolated vocals: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uqrfutf9qxa3u8q/kris-lead.zip?dl=0

If you get a feel for it, feel free to start playing around with it and maybe we can get more contributions in the shape of fills etc

Oh dear, I've only just started looking at this, started developing something for the intro and noticed the deadline is Jan 3rd, sorry, I feel bad as it was inspired by my idea.

As there hasn't been much input, probably due to family time, any chance of extending it?

Cheers

Hello folks,

Thought I'd try a bit of acoustic in the intro. Along this idea, what do you think?

One question, how do I prevent the sound of my breathing apart from holding my breath? I had a pop canceller in front of the mic, I thought about getting a snorkel but that might be worse. Is there a way with a limiter of something like that? Both my acoustics have piezos in them but as you know, they just don't have the same sound. Maybe a scarf or Covid face mask will do it wink.gif

Cheers

Sounds great Phil!

The breathing here is not prominent + I don't mind a little breathing it just makes it sound more human.

Typically a directional mic can help you pick up sound from a specific area.

Sm57 should be fine though, maybe try putting it closer to the guitar if you want less room noise

Posted by: Phil66 Jan 3 2021, 10:31 AM

Thanks,

It was a few inches away from the 12th fret, I think it captured the sound of the guitar pretty good to be honest.

Yes, I don't see any problems with your recording either - but if you want less room/breathing noise, then moving the mic closer is def one way to go.

Thanks I'll try it, it's worse when the notes are quiet and in the gaps, I tried cutting the gaps out in Reaper but it sounded fake with complete silence, that was when listening in isolation though maybe along with the backing it will be less noticeable.

That sounds great mate! Using a sm57 is a very good option for acoustics, and I've never had any issues with guitarist's breathing. If you put it close to your guitar, the breath won't be a problem.

57 is a great mic for just about everything smile.gif There is a handy hack that folks sometimes use for a second mic. Just grab your cell phone and point it (mic is in the bottom) toward the hole in our acoustic guitar. You can mix it in to the other audio and see if you like it. Not for this one, but just something to maybe try next time you use your acoustic.

Had some fun and games recording this, couldn't get rid of the breathing even with the mic 1" (25mm) from the guitar but the mask in the video means that you can't hear it along with the backing wink.gif Gives it a bit of Friday The 13th vibe though laugh.gif

Also, this has introduced me to the world of post-recording VST plugins, never used them before but used and EQ and comp, don't really understand compressors so pulled one out of the box and left it as it was, it seemed to help.

Now to look at the other parts.

Chord Progressions (Phil asked for these ones)

Part II & III:

Bm A | D F#m | A G | A E |
Bm A | D F#m | A G | A E |

Part IV:

Riff in B minor over: B5 | A5 G5 A5 | (4 times)

Bm | Bm | A | A | G | G | A | (x2)

This is Cael's original GP file where you can learn parts I, II and III:  Led_Zep_ideas.gp5 ( 9.6K ) : 94

if it is a slash chord , you can also play a B( second fret root on the 5th string ) minor chord with the root an open A note(5th string) , for nice tonalities, its like a walking bass note

No probleem mate.

BTW a slash chord is a chord with another (mostly) chord tone in the base.
So of you gave a G chord its spelled GBD. Sometimes you see the G/B you then play a G chord first inversion so that it starts with the B note.

If you got an A note in the bminor it is a Bminor 7 because the A is the 7th note of the B minor scale. Just a little theory πŸ™‚

Or i mean the A is the minor 7th of the B. Then i say it correct 😁

Hi Phil! Tim is completely right!

This is a simple way of writing chord progression charts. You can find it in most of our lessons:

Chord Progressions (Phil asked for these ones)

Part II & III:

Bm A | D F#m | A G | A E |
Bm A | D F#m | A G | A E |

Part IV:

Riff in B minor over: B5 | A5 G5 A5 | (4 times)

Bm | Bm | A | A | G | G | A | (x2)

This is Cael's original GP file where you can learn parts I, II and III:  Led_Zep_ideas.gp5 ( 9.6K ) : 94

Thanks Gab,

I'm a little confused, does Part II start on beat 3 of bar 9 (or bar 8 if you don't count the count in bar)?? How I'm looking at it it does, so is that E. I'm thinking of doing a simple root note bassline but if it's getting on your nerves with me keep asking I'll try something else. Please excuse my ignorance. You'll see what I mean if you click the image below, (I hope).
https://flic.kr/p/2kqgKpt

By the way, I did answer your question asking about which Scarlett I use, I think you missed it, it's a 2nd Gen 18i8

Cheers

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 9 2021, 06:20 PM

Hi Phil, in that part (last beat), the bass plays G - A (8th notes). Let me know if this clarifies the part.

I'm checking your Scarlett and it seems that it is the same to use any of the 4 inputs for your SM57. One thing that you can try is to increase gain input in your Daw.

Thanks Gab,
Apologies for me being a musical numpty rolleyes.gif so am I correct in saying that bars 9 (8 without count in) & 13 (12 without count in) beat 3 is E and beat 4 is G & A? Would I be okay playing E to follow the chord progression?

Regarding the mic issue, I've ordered one of https://www.audio-technica.com/en-gb/microphones/wired/series/20-series/at2020 to try. With the gain on full on my Scarlett and increasing in the DAW it seemed to emphasise noise so I'll give that mic a try. I've enjoyed experimenting with acoustic recording.

You mentioned a few posts ago about sharing some YouTube videos about post recording pluggins, I would be grateful if you could share them.

Thanks for your help buddy.

Exactly this:

"bars 9 (8 without count in) & 13 (12 without count in) beat 3 is E and beat 4 is G & A"

The G & A is more like a passing movement that wasn't added in my first chart to simplify the chords (for improvisational purposes). But if you want to add a bass line, the best is to play those G & A notes.

Ok friends! We are reaching the deadline. Are there more takes coming? I can wait a bit since we need more stuff!

Posted by: Phil66 Jan 11 2021, 09:53 PM

Done another take of the intro/outro on a different guitar. Then BOOM it's the deadline tomorrow. Still not many entries, I guess it's people getting back into things after the Christmas break that's slowing things down. I haven't got half done what I wanted to, or at least what I wanted to try to do sad.gif

Nice!! Thanks a lot!! biggrin.gif

Phil wrote a message for the ones that are unsure to join:

"Record and submit anything that comes into your head, from one note to a whole solo, one chord to a whole progression, even some weird effect, if we can use it we will, we enjoy piecing all of the bits together so come on, give us the pieces of the jigsaw"

Okay, here is something for part two. As usual, every time you listen you always think, "Hmmmmm I could change that bit, I could change this bit" but in the end, you just have to put something down. No improv is perfect unless you spend more time than we have here wink.gif

I think this is one of my favourite solos of mine. I don't know why, and it's not like me at all but I do like it a lot except my vibrato goes to pieces when I record video laugh.gif smile.gif

I’m talking about the outro. The tension is generated by the combination of your acoustic solo and the backing that plays a long static chord.

Killer stuff!! I love the interplay between the leads and vocals - super tasty!

I would say the vocals lack top end and get a bit buried when the mix gets busier. Also the entire mix feels a bit bass heavy.

I don't expect to make money on it, but like so many of our collabs, I'd love to see it available online in various streaming outlets. It would be a great way to promote GMC, but also a great way to just share our work with the world smile.gif

What do you guys think? Also if this is OK, is there a certain way I should list the track in terms of it's "owner" and or original writer?

P.S. I have shared this on several groups on facebook. If you guys can, please do share on your social media as well. These projects are really amazing and I think other musicians would really appreciate them and maybe even come join us here at GMC smile.gif

Hi Todd! Thanks for your nice comments and for sharing the collab video!! There are also free services to distribute music. OneRpm is one of them.

I'm not sure if publishing this type of collabs at Spotify makes sense but I'm up to help if you decide to do it! wink.gif

I think that the best would be to create something like "GMC Collabs" artist. If you add the students as artists, the system will create a profile for each of them at Spotify and this could be a very bad move for the future since managing the artist profiles isn't smooth at all.

If you have any questions, feel free to write me! wink.gif

Good point I've noticed that another guy with my name is being bundled as me pretty much on spotify so yeah. Great idea. I'll do as GMC Collabs for Artist name.

Yes, that's one of the most common issues. It's not necessary to add any other name there at this point. wink.gif
