You might find the music unusual but check out his picking technique. So relaxed. Also, mostly pentatonic 2 note per string shapes which are even harder to play faster with. Love the effect of that scalloped neck and the slides he uses cool.gif

Wow, I watched the whole thing.. just when you think it can't get any more amazing, it does !!! smile.gif

One thing I noticed is that I can't think of anyone in the metal world who picks like that. There are very fast guys like MAB and Rusty Cooley but us metal and rock guys have a very linear approach whereas McLaughlin and DeLucia just seem to explode these crazy runs out of nowhere and it doesn't sound like they're just running through a diatonic scale sequence. How the hell do they do that ? ohmy.gif

Gotta go practice ! biggrin.gif

Well McLaughlin spent quite a few years studying Indian and other far eastern musical composition, which may help explain why he often sounds less diatonic. A little different but Holdsworth also hase a pretty unique approach to scales and stuff as well.

A bit OT, but I've been lucky enough to see him play live a few times and every time his musicality and improvisation has been outstanding.

Here's my favorite! Seen Al DiMeola twice and I was mind blown by his musicianship and mastery of the guitar!

I wish I could see all three of them perform live biggrin.gif

Yeah, they'd probably never do it again. I read once that the tension and competitiveness was so intense between them all that once they'd walked off stage they wouldn't even speak to each other.. they would just go their seperate ways ! ohmy.gif Anybody else hear anything about that ?

It could be that their ego is so big because they are such monster players, but it's a shame if it's true, they should be creating music together not go separate ways just because they are trying to compete who will play faster.

Yeah I do wonder whether it was mostly between DiMeola and McLaughlin because in the video Sinisa shared it was just Paco deLucia and McLaughlin but never seen Al and John together without deLucia. Also they were both alternate pickers but deLucio was a monster with his fingers ! smile.gif
