GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Can Someone Help Me Out?

Posted by: Jesse Mar 6 2009, 06:17 PM

You all know I like blues, and I can play a little acoustic blues, you know, with the seperate bass/melody line, thanks to Ivan's great delta blues lesson. But as you've probably noticed by now, this man is absolutely EPIC. I mean, he's great! My acoustic guitar is getting a litte too small for me, it has a special super thin neck, it's smaller than my fender strat's! SO I'm looking into new things. Questions:
Is this a Martin he's playing?
Does he use finger picks, can you see?
What's that seperate pickup?! Any info on brand's /prices really appreciated, since I'd love an 100 % acoustic.
That's it I think biggrin.gif

For the record, I think we need more lessons like this!

and sorry I can't really answer any of your questions lol

but it does look like he might be using a thumb pick. (one that wraps around yout thumb so that you dont need to hold it with your index finger... you know what I mean)

Hmmm....

Dont think its a martin, looks quite big as well, maybe a Fender??

Classic blues players use either Martin 00-28 or Gibson J200, but these are a lot of money mate around 2000 sterling! I suspect he uses an aftermarket pick-up in the sound hole to capture the rich tones of a full acoustic, cutaways really dont have that fuller tone of a true acoustic, most of the big PUP manufacturers make acoustic pickups so just check out their web sites.

Anyway acoustics are even more ridiculously priced than electrics at the top end of the market, for high end I would look at Fylde, Martin and Gibson J200 (A big guitar!) and maybe Larivee

Mid price look at Fenders, Takamine and Crafter (Check out my Crafter on my profile page), dont get anything with a fibreglass back or a hybrid acoustic as you will just miss the point entirely and they sound s*ite when not amped.

EDIT:

If you like good acoustic players check this guy out, acoustic shredding?!? Check out the rip at 1:25 and it just gets better fro mthere!

Thank's for the info! That guy's mad good, prefer more bluesier stuff tho, but this must be hard on his hands, if he uses nylon that is.

Answers:-
Looks like a 'Parlour Guitar', it could be a Martin but it's hard to tell from this video. Parlour Guitars have a quite slim body at the waist and look slightly longer than a Dreadnought because of this.
Definitely looks like he's playing with a Thumb Pick.
There are hundreds of After-market Pick ups and, to be honest, some will work better with certain Guitars and some won't!! Prices will range from about £20 through to £150+!!! Do a search for 'Acoustic Pickup' and you'll see what I mean!!! Manufacturers to look for are Dean Markley, Seymour Duncan, LR Baggs, Artec and Fishman. as with all things 'You get what you pay for'!!! Hope this helps a little bit!!

Awesome blues. I love that style on acoustic guitar when you play rhythm and solo at the same time. I am 90% sure he uses a thumb pick.
