New (used) Amp Day!

Jun 30 2010, 07:03 PM	GMC:er Posts: 152 Joined: 28-January 08 From: Malmö, Sweden	I've been desperately needing a new amp since my old Marshall Mosfet didn't cut it anymore. it actually sounded quite rubbish even when I got it... But for some months now I've scouting the market for a new amp for a reasonable price. Sure, if I had the cash I could have bought a Mesa, Bogner or something like that. Anyway, I walked in to a music store 1 week ago not really looking for anything special but more hanging out in the store. All of the sudden the guy working there asks my friend when he is gonna buy his amp? My friend then says that he's not gonna but Matte here (that's me) needs a new amp. So 1 week later, today, this is the amp I got home from the store: The only sad thing is that my 4x12 cab is at the rehearsal place so I can't try it for real until Sunday... It's a great Metal amp! When the tubes die on you and you take it to a tech to replace them, ask for a bias-mod too. The 5150/6505 models run on a very low bias to increase the tube life - with a hotter setting the tubes are going to last almost as long but the tone becomes much better (warmer, fatter, less harsh) You are at GuitarMasterClass.net Don't miss today's free lick. I surely hope so too... However I will try to get hold of an multimeter and measure the actual ohm of the cab. Jul 8 2010, 08:20 AM	GMC:er Posts: 152 Joined: 28-January 08 From: Malmö, Sweden	Hi! So I finally was able to try my "new" 5150 with the 1960A lead cab. I bought a multimeter and measured the Ohm on the cab and after a while the meters settled on approx 8 Ohm... So I put the "Ohm switch" on the Peavey to 8 and plugged in the old Les Paul. Man oh man was this loud!!! I have heard stuff about the 5150 and the 6505 being loud as hell but this was insane! A bit alarming regarding the ohm though coz I found some articles stating that all 1960A cabs with only one input are 16 Ohm, mine wasn't... However another problem now also "appeared". Since I'm used to hearing my other amp in level to my chest/head I was kinda used to that. But with the 1960A all the power/volume is down by my feet. If I step away a couple of meters I can hear it all but not when standing close to the cab. And since our rehearsal room is quite small I have to stand close to the amp. So to compensate this I simply turned the volume up more I could feel every chord/strum/note and it felt like someone was kicking my legs. Poor bassman who's actually standing a couple of meters from my cab right in front of it. I bet his ears were ringing all night... The solution to this would be to either position myself a bit farther from the cab or buy another cab and create a small Marshall wall with two 4x12. Awesome!!! And for your other problem: just put your 4x12 cab onto two empty boxes of beer and voila: high enough to hear yourself + beer always looks metal^^ You are at GuitarMasterClass.net Don't miss today's free lick.
