GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Fastest And Most Technical Guitarists?

Posted by: GGTopGuitarist Sep 28 2009, 11:21 PM

who do you think are the most technical and fast guitarists that still sound awesome?
mine are:

1. john petrucci
2. guthrie govan
3. bucketehad
4. shawn lane
5. jeff loomis (although i'm new to him and still find his music a little too hectic and scary)

yes i know that being able to play fast isn't what music is about but speed is just another tool in the music toolbox :-P

HMMMMMM.........Muris Varajic.........\m/\m/

well i would say something like what you said, but with some different names and order.

1-Shawn lane
2-Guthrie govan
3-Steve morse
4-John petrucci
5-Chris broderick
6-Michael angelo batio

Rusty cooley is also really technical, but i don't really love his sound...

Posted by: mhskeide Sep 28 2009, 11:45 PM

I can mention some of mine, but not in any specific order, except that the fact
Petrucci = my god!

Else than that:

Steve Vai - some cheesy music, but he`s insanely good, and plays it so easily)
Muris Varajic - Muris is up with the A-team as well, without a doubt
Guthrie Govan
Yngwie Malmsteen - the developer of shred?
Steve Morse - the worlds most versatile guitar player?
Satriani - I feel he cares more about the music than the shred, even though he`s kicking most peoples asses techniqual wise aswell)
Andy Mckee - not a shredder, but wild technique
Paul Gilbert - black belt in string skipping
Michael Angelo - I just find him entertaining while shredding at the quad guitar! If he had two more hands, I bet he`d shred all necks simultanously

and ofcourse: gotte love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0KNDBhemRk guy laugh.gif

Vinnie Moore
Paul Gilbert
Yngwie Malmsteen
Guthrie Govan
Michael Angelo

These are all great technical players and also their music makes sense unlike thousands of meaningless shredders.

Paul gilbert is my favorite. He still playing fast and technical and not with a too much distorsion like some other shredders.. his note are very clear. I also love musically his song

Totally agree....... cool.gif

Well I also had a list and it went like this:
V Moore, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, G. Govan... but since I'm on GMC (and see some unbelievably good players) I would call them just guitarist I like to listen to.

Hahaha, I wanted to make a joke about some awful guitarist myself, but couldn`t come up with any good name on the spot tongue.gif

Totally agree. Though he has 2 square meters with pedals, he`s keeping his tone way under the high-gain level. Something I believe requires much more precision and strong articulation when playing (which he has tons of cool.gif )

If there is something that bores me to death then it is people playing ultra fast and technical only for the sake of doing it, or showing off. A single bent note with a good vibrato means much more to me than scales played at the speed of light. But thats all a matter of taste I guess.

Well said Marcus. And also that single note is more difficult to execute properly than 30 notes per second smile.gif

I dont agree on that tongue.gif

It's really a personal preference but I prefer some slow and cool SRV blues solo than some crazy Rusty Cooley style of shredding. I like to play fast stuff but I also try to make my melody with some logical structure. Most modern shredders are playing random notes and weird scale shapes in the speed of light. That's something that I do respect but not necessarily enjoy when it comes to musicality.

David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist, and we can not say he is shredder smile.gif, but I really enjoy his style of playing guitar

I like blues better, biggrin.gif dont get me wrong

from what I saw Shawn Lane!
Being technical doesn't just mean you can play fast, but Shawn has universal picking, good for EVERYTHING!

Posted by: Braer Sep 29 2009, 06:20 PM

1. Paul Gilbert
2. Yngwie Malmsteen
3. Steve Vai
4. Jose Mena

Well said Emir..... smile.gif I can listen to Rusty Cooley for like 10 seconds. I love shred too.....but I need melody to keep me interested. I'm not a big fan of blues though..... laugh.gif

And I agree with Emir, I don't have a problem with somebody shredding, I can respect his technical abilities, but this is not something that I also have to like. Don't get me wrong, there are really good shredders, that play stuff that I absolutely love, but if speed is all you have to offer than this is definitely not enough for me.

Shred isn't my favourite kind of music but imo, the best shredders around are.

Yngwie Malmsteen
Paul Gilbert
Jeff Loomis
Rustey Cooley

Can't believe Jason Becker only got one mention. That guy is an inspiration. There's a lot of good shredders out there. Unfortunately only 10% make music I can listen to. Satriani has got to be up there though. Near flawless technique but also amazing song writing ability.

I agree with Emir here, playing guitar fast is a challenge and all of us at one point or another pursue it, however sometimes we take away musicality for the sake of playing fast, when I listen to SRV I understand that playing bluesy slower licks is more difficult and challenging.

What was said by Emir on another post is absolutely true it is very hard to play a single note very slowly with the right amount of vibrato and feel

Again very true, I see new shredders on you tube that play fast but that is all

Not so much the shred-a-minute, lightning fast stuff that is considered wizardry to the uninitiated..
but a guitarist springs to mind that I would most definately describe as technical

Ron Jarzombek (Blotted Science, Watchtower, Spastic Ink..etc)

I can't believe you mentioned Jarzombek. I only discovered him lately but he is a fantastic player.

Also I would mention

Marco Sfogli (first appeared in Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie's solo project)

or even

Guthrie Govan

who is not even considered a shredder but incorporates fast picking/sweeping/legato passages into his playing while still keeping balance. He just spices his solos up but his magic is still in his style.
