GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Favorite Overdrive Pedal?

Posted by: Bear Rose Aug 26 2010, 06:09 PM

I've bought and sold lots of different overdrive pedals over the past couple of years and its really hard to find one that nails that exact tone I'm looking for. Right now, I'd say my current favorite overdrive pedal is a Butah pedal made by Chad at Cmatmods.com, but I'm also really digging a Jetter Gain Stage Gold for higher gain sound. The Butah is a low gain overdrive but it gives a great tone in my opinion.

What would you say is your favorite overdrive that you've ever used?

I love my Maxon OD808!
Maxon was the company that built the tubescreamers for Ibanez back in the days - so these are the REAL tubescreamers!!

I only use it as a boost to tighten my low end and not as an actual source of gain...

I've never tried any of Maxon's stuff, but I've heard great things about them. I think those are what Dave Weiner uses, IIRC. I've got a Keeley modded tubescreamer. Maybe one day I'll try out a Maxon one.

I've tried tons, but I really like my Suhr Shiba Drive.
The EMMA ReezaFRATzitz is great too smile.gif

Never tried the Suhr Shiba, but I have a friend who played his for me a little and it has got a great sound to it. I've never tried the EMMA stuff either, but they have a good sound from some youtube videos I've seen demoing them.

Tubescreamers, even without special mods, work pretty good in most contexts.

Just got a new Providence Stampede Overdrive, for lead boosts over a crunch rhythym sound it is simply the best Ive ever heard, replaced my TS9 and OCD in one fell swoop!

I rarely use OD pedals, but if i ever do.. it's the diy TubeScreamer clone i built from a kit i got from GeneralGuitarGadgets.
It's basically a tubescreamer clone with all the botique mods that sounds as awesome as can be.. and since you build it yourself.. it's CHEAP smile.gif

I just got a Timmy overdrive which is supposed to be extremely transparent, so we'll see if it tops my list now.

I've got one of those as well, Trond! It does have a great sound to it. I haven't done the boutique mods to it yet, I just did the stock setup first to see how it would sound. Now I need to get inspired to go mod it! It is really hard to beat for the price!
