I'm not sure how many people here listen to Celtic music but I thought I'd share and also make some recommendations.
I've been around Celtic music my whole life....it has great influence here in eastern Canada. I love traditional music but have been a huge fan of Celtic Rock and Punk for some time now. Basically the traditional music with a twist. It contains traditional instruments such as bagpipes, accordians, tin whistles, guitars etc...but it's been rock/punked up a bit. So for anyone who is interested I've included a couple of youtube videos of my two favorite bands in this genre....Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly plus made some recommendations incase anyone was interested.

Last week I was on a birthdayparty, and they played a CD with Celtic rock/punk music!
Don't know what band it was, but I think Dropkick Murphy's. And it was really good!

WOOOOW!!! I REALLY liked the first video!!! The second one aswell! I think I need some time to get used to the vocals though. This was totally awesome.


Btw, are any of these bands anywhere close to the music from Riverdance? If not any of these bands, do you know any? Like more traditonal stuff without screaming vocals and guitars
I'd really like to know, becuase the music from Riverdance makes me cry, not becuase its so beautiful or sad, but becuase its so extremely awesome.

if so all the bands do traditional irish reels...just depends on the song. Also there is a women from Halifax named Natalie McMaster she plays the fiddle and she is amazing most of her stuff are reels. I'll see if I can find some videos for ya if not I'll post some mp3's.

By the way I've added the Chieftans to the list.....how could I forget the Chieftans....

Have you ever heard the music from Riverdance? Its completely mindblowing. I can assure you that if I ever go to a Riverdance show I will go crazy and laugh and cry myself to death. Becuase I'm crying and laughing when I'm listning to Riverdance in my room. Its so extremely amazing that there are absolutely no words to describe how amazing it is. I want to keep typing this for a couple of hours more, because I just cant say it enough.

Riverdance is amazing Robin. I saw it in halifax a few years ago.

Like I said in the original post Celtic music has a huge influence here in eastern Canada. I've been around it my whole life. From highland dance when I was a kid to drinking at the pub now. I love the traditional stuff but the rock/punk stuff is just so much fun. I guess it's like death metal for me....you just have to get past the singing But believe me when you do it's a great trip....it's impossible not to have fun listening to this stuff....even the slow stuff cause you just sing along.

Oh and Robin check out the band Leahy....I think they are exactly what your looking for

There are some great bands listed here. I'd also check out some of Canada's folk and rock influences. Figgy Duff, and Stan Rogers are ones that spring to my mind as outstanding examples of the "New World" traditional sound.

My family are all heavily involved in Irish music and language, and I grew up in a household that regularly had music sessions. My cousin Paul is a master fiddle player and instrument builder. You might like some of his music, though it's probably more traditional, so maybe a bit "hardcore" and not to everyones taste.

I'm glad you enjoy this type of music Tank. I have a revised list as well that I'll post hopefully later this evening...at work right now...that lists a few more fiddlers and more traditional artists. Like you said it may be an aquired taste for some but I love it so much.

I enjoyed the second clip more to be honest. But both are pretty cool. I'm working on a more formal Celtic Music recommendation list and hope to have it posted in the next day or so...lots more bands and a few other sub genres so keep an eye out.
