GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Having A Hard Time Being A Guitar-o-holic

Posted by: mhskeide Nov 1 2009, 11:18 PM

I already have a great Ibanez S classic, and a carvin strat. STILL, I`m seriously thinking about buying a carvin dv 727 from ebay even though it costs over 1000$ (and after all I`m student).
I want a "shredguitar" with a whammy, and think I`m a bit too demanding on the specs compared to my skills ....

anyone else familiar with the problem of constantly wanting new guitars?

Lol have you seen my signature below my posts?!?!? wink.gif

I have 15 guitars. I always want more! If I find one that I like, I like to have two or three of the same one. It's really a sickness. Most of my guitars would be considered, "beyond my skillset." I just love guitars though.

Haha, yeah you got QUITE a collection! I read that you spent all of your savings on your latest Jackson biggrin.gif

Even though I`m getting better at the guitar, at least I hope so, I feel that a Carvin with bareknuckles is a bit above my level of playing. Still, compared to my other guitars, this guitar is much more ME if you catch me drift wink.gif

On the other hand, it can be seen as an investment as well. 1500$ is a lot of money, still I think I could get 2000 $ by selling it in Norway with the right timing...

Go for it man! If you feel like buying it because it might be YOUR guitar, what more of a reason do you need?

And yes I have spent ALL of my savings which is why I have to sell some other guitar but I will propably get a new one right away^^ stay tuned for more gear to come!!

G.A.S. is terrible!!! i,m up to 5 already and i,m only a mediocre guitarist at best!

Posted by: Staffy Nov 2 2009, 12:59 AM

Hi! My name is Staffay and I'm also a Gear-a-holic, I guess Im on a amateur level guitar-wise, since I only have 6 at the moment, but on the other hand I have 3 pianos, 2 synthesizers, a lot of expensive studio stuff and two rabbits. But I also found out that it's way better to spend the money on gear than on women, cheap booze or holiday's with bad weather. I rather say that we must stand up for our rights to have these lovely pieces! Im going to be burried with my guitars! laugh.gif

Yeah, I know what you mean.. smile.gif

I'm getting my third Nik Huber late next year..
They don't come cheap, although my next one isn't the most expensive.
He's making me a guitar after my own specs, where I mix some of his guitars into a new model biggrin.gif
He's never built a model like this before, so it's gonna be exciting to see what it looks like in the end..
So hopefully my specs will be good enough to shake the foundations of modern guitar history tongue.gif

I have to live off Macaroni and ketchup for a while now, haha laugh.gif

I'm GAS personified biggrin.gif

He wasn't thinking at all cause he obviously had no brain... biggrin.gif But You're most welcome to join us again, my electricity bill is ridiculous high, and if I can be provided with some high-class northsea oil instead, I have no problems with that. And You in return will not have to smuggle tobacco and liquers anymore!!! laugh.gif

my problem is i am left handed, and can't just walk in and pick one off the shelf. and am not sure what a good guitar might even fell like. of course i could custom order one for two grand but don't have that kind of cash and wouldn't be able to return it if i didn't like it. looks like i'am ool

The dream of united Scandinavia was dreamed by many kings off all the northern nations, alas all of them were not realized.... Will the combined effort of two venerable GAS addicts be enough to overcome the obstacles created by decades of isolation!?!?

Hahaha, going from gear-o-holics confessions to history class, sweet tongue.gif

I wanted to tell that I resisted to buy that Carvin tongue.gif
Most likely a loss in pleasure, but a big save for economy.... which will rather go to the Blackstar ht-5 as soon as my luthier gets his finger out and orders some laugh.gif

What's wrong and can be really disappointing is to buy new guitars thinking you will play better with more expensive stuff. I already tried that. It doesn't work. tongue.gif

Nah, that fact do we all already know. The drooling comes from just OWNING and looking at them. Look at Jimi Hendrix, he played at some piece'o'junk that wasn't even pre-cbs. I once saw Larry Carlton showing off, cutting the three lowest strings off with a plier, and then continued to play. And still it sounded great!

Posted by: mhskeide Nov 2 2009, 09:42 PM

I think new guitar players today have e tendency to buy/wish themselves much more expensive guitars than they actually need (talking from my very own point of view tongue.gif ). Even though I reckon myself as a OK guitar player, I bet that even with a high-end Ibanez or Music Man (or similar), any of the instructors would sound better than me even with a cheapo Squier tongue.gif
