Hey Muris, this is a question about your lydian riffing lesson.

I noticed when you're just playing an Open E on the 6th string, sometimes you add the E plus the 4th interval of the lydian scale which is an A#. It adds a lot of flavor to the riff. If I wanted to apply this to my own riffs, say in the key of E, would I just take the interval that seperates the mode from the other modes like the b2nd in phygian and just add it on top of the E I was chugging away on?

Also the b5th modulation is awesome, I can't wait to apply that to my own riffs....

Hi fatb0t. smile.gif

Yeah, you can experiment a lot with
notes that are flavor for certain modes,
#4th for Lydian,b2nd for Phrygian etc.
Play single note which is root E in your example
and add notes one by one.
Actually,Joe Satriani has few tunes based on same idea,
different modes played on same root note,
both riffing and soloing,
tunes like Not Of This Earth,Lords Of Karma etc. smile.gif

I talked to you about the same on another topic. Been looking a bit into it. Let me see if I get it right:

Lydian = emphasis on the sharp 4th
Mixolydian = emphasis on the flat 7th

Dorian = emphasis on the the major 6th
Phrygian = emphasis on the flat 2nd

Locrian = emphasis on...flat 2nd and flat..5th?

I'm not sure about the locrian, but how are the others? And what about Ionian and Aeolian? What would you put emphasis on there?

By the way, by emphasis I just mean... well... like you do in your Lydian riffing lesson! wink.gif

Some nice questions Caelumamittendum. smile.gif

Those are flavor/emphasis notes you mentioned
but they do not mean a lot if you play only them.
I'll try to explain it tho.
Lets say we play flat 7th interval only,
it could me minor scale as well.
But if we just touch major 3rd then we have
Mixolydian mode and we can hear it.
Same thing with sharp 4th interval,
it can be piece of Dorian #4 which is 4th mode
starting with Harmonic Minor.
But if the throw major 3rd then we can hear Lydian mode.
So as you can see all of these modes have emphasis notes
but they are always kind a compared with major or minor scale.
That's why I like to say that there are major and minor modes,
only difference is usually just in one note compared to major or minor scale.

Yes, I fully understand that. What I'm really after is what the flavor notes in each mode are. smile.gif

So still, this is correct, right:

Lydian = emphasis on the sharp 4th
Mixolydian = emphasis on the flat 7th

Dorian = emphasis on the the major 6th
Phrygian = emphasis on the flat 2nd

?? smile.gif

But what about locrian, aeolian and ionian? I'm not quite sure what the flavor notes would be in those?

I kinda feel, that it is "do it yourself"/"figure it out yourself" kinda thing, so just tell me if that is it! laugh.gif

I thought I answered laugh.gif

Ok,once more. smile.gif

Lydian = emphasis on the sharp 4th (compared with major/Ionian scale)
Mixolydian = emphasis on the flat 7th (compared with major/Ionian scale)

Dorian = emphasis on the the major 6th (compared with minor/Aeolian scale)
Phrygian = emphasis on the flat 2nd (compared with minor/Aeolian scale)
Locrian = emphasis on the flat 2nd and flat 5th (compared with minor/Aeolian scale)

Now you can see those major/minor modes groups I was talking about.
And also you can see what is emphasis,
note that is different in certain mode compared with major or minor scale.

Since major and minor scales are the starting points
it's not needed to seek for emphasis in them.
But if we really want to do that
then we could look for difference between them.
And those difference would be 3rd,6th and 7th degrees,
everything else is the same,root,4th and 5th.

Oh, you probably did. I was just looking for a: "yes, that is correct" and couldn't see it! laugh.gif

Thanks for clearing that up, Muris! That's something I think is of great value when learning modes!
