Hey guys!! Inspired by the cool thread by Cosmin where you are creating a Groove, I had the cool idea of trying something new that I'm sure will end in a great composition! And maybe a youtube video?
The idea is that each of as records a melody of 4 measures over the following backing track, but we have to be very organized to do this cool and fluently. I recorded the first melody, if you want to be the next GMC:er that adds a melody you must say: "I'm recording my melody right now!", download the files from Soundcloud that has my melody, record your melody and upload the new file.... Please don't take more than 5/10 minutes to record the solo so you just have to say the magic phrase once you really know what you are going to play. (maybe once you have it recorded!).
Is this clear?? You can participate all the times that you want so we could be creating a very big song!
The backing is in E minor so you can use E minor scale and E Pentatonic minor.

I think it would be a good idea to decrease samples/bitrate a bit, since the file is 114Mb.

Recording.
Meanwhile, in Swerbia.

So me and Slav decided to join forces and play harmonies in the first part of the first chorus. There is a small gap in the lead between this take and the previous take; we could either leave it like that or someone can fill in something cool.
I have bounced as 22100/16 and converted to mp3, so the file isn't so big. I am assuming that all the takes are securely backed up on hard drives around the world, so that it is possible to make a proper mix at some point in the future.

Ok "I'm recording my melody right now!" I filled in the little blank space before the chorus and tried to comp the lick before and after , hope its ok Sorry I don't have a Soundcloud account , maybe someone can DL it from here and post it for me there if that makes it easier on folks with slower connections? I guess I should sign up.

I am not 100% sure, but I think the last person to post that recording has to have the file set so you can download it. I don't think it's you jstcrsn.... but I've been wrong before. However, If you look at Bleez's take, he has it set to download.

Well... I think the download feature may be a premium feature actually.... which I assume some of the guys maybe have paid for. I did not as I have the free soundcloud account, but when I post stuff for takes I usually will put up a soundcloud link just so you guys can listen to it right from the forum posting, but I also upload the take straight from my PC as well so the instructor can download it.
I've never really done much with sound cloud beyond just post things up there. I also use dropbox and share the links straight from my dropbox account which I find to be really easy as well.
Sorry, not much help. Actually when I replied to you, what I was remembering was that I had a sound file set to private and no one could even listen to so I had to go set it to public so it could be played by everyone.
Posted by: edguy Jan 12 2013, 11:04 PM
Hey guys,
sorry I didn't know that I need a paid soundcloud account that you are able to download the latest version of the song.
I doubt that one needs a paid account to make the files downloadable. Login to your account, click the Edit button (a pencil symbol under the player, to the right of the Share button if you mousover), scroll down to "Advanced settings" and see if the "Downloads enabled" button has a red cross; if so, click it and it should become a green check mark, after which you can click Save.

Hey guys! I think that you don't have to pay a soundcloud account to allow donwloads, you have to set it when you upload the file, or edit it later as Hungryforheaven said.
I'm so happy with how this is turning!! I enjoy this one a lot!! Thanks melted for your take!! It's time for another take!!

When you are ready to download your take, use the file posted here by clicking on the arrow at the end of the soundcloud track. While uploading your own take with sound cloud you'll see a red x at the left bottom of the page... "click" on this box to change the red X to a green check mark. Then it will be downloadable for the next take to continue on.
Posted by: maharzan Jan 13 2013, 09:13 AM
No you don't have to pay to allow downloads in soundcloud. After uploading your take, just check near the bottom of the page to allow downloads. Its disabled by default.

Nah, someone else can go ahead and grab it for recording. I won't have time to change it up until the weekend and it won't fit anywhere else as I made it fade back in from the last post. I guess I was too wrapped up in trying to to keep the mistakes down and making it fit in the limited time that I had last night for recording to think about counting off bars.
I should have just gone to a bar instead, it would have been more productive.

[attachment=30300:Connecti...Melodies.mp3] And here is a link to it on Soundcloud, sorry I can't seem to get it to embed for some reason.
Strike that! I got it to embed but I had to type in the code
but how can I record over the backing track clearly and add up to the previous recording?

Do you have a DAW to record with? You can record your guitar on a separate track and then upload the whole file when done.

Aw man, is that how it's spelled? I thought someone said Doll, so I got one of them inflatible kind. I couldn't figure out how in the world anyone got any recording done with that...., she just sits there with that big Open mouth stare making me feel uncomfortible while I'm trying to concentrate on my recording.

Seriously.... How are you recording?
I use a PC to record with as I spent all my money on the guitars and not enough left to afford a MAC, but I use Audacity which is a free download and works just fine for simple recording, then exporting to .mp3 to upload back up to share.

Audacity is OK but for a more complete set up try http://www.reaper.fm/download.php, especially as it supports VST's and VSTi's. Meaning you can also download the free versions of Amplitube etc. to use within it!!

Oppsy, I must have spelled it wrong when you asked.
In the meantime, I recorded a melody. I'll be back in a few minutes

Ahh, ok. Thanks for the info SJ. I may just copy this over to the other thread I started. Don't know that it will help anyone or not, but never know. With so many of us here using different things, I'm sure there are some good ideas out there that the rest of us can use to make our lives a little easier...

Great take mate! So ok guys... we could end this song here, and start with a a new song for... our EP?? Maybe we could record 3 or 4 songs in this way and publish it as a free download EP... what do you think? Is anybody interested in doing the art cover?

Cool idea! I think doing more of these would be fun. Having an EP for free would be awesome.
I can't help with the art though...

No worries. If you decide to use Reaper then Tony wrote a whole series of articles about setting it up and starting to record with it. You can find the first one http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=7203.
If you need any other help with it just ask, I started with Audacity, then Reaper and now I'm using SONAR X2. I'm no expert but if I can help I will!

Ok, that sounds good... literally. I'll give reaper a try, SONAR looks like I may need government clearance to have that on my PC. Does it come with the launch sequence codes?
Also, are you recording your guitar straight through the software effects?

Hahah, that's how I felt when I first opened SONAR up!! Search on Youtube for Tutorial vids as well, in fact just look http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=reaper+tutorial+beginner&oq=reaper+tutorial&gs_l=youtube.1.1.0l10.611.4290.0.8236.15.9.0.6.6.0.341.1778.3j1j3j2.9.0...0.0...1ac.1.z6QLKPxL7bQ
Yeah, I've got a very basic set-up really. Guiar goes into:-
Then I was using Guitar Rig 4 or Waves GTR 3.5 in Reaper. SONAR ships with a lite version of Overloud TH2.

That looks familiar enough, I'd like to start adding some cool effects into the mix. I really like the synth sounding stuff that I've heard around, though I definitely don't know anything about what to use for that sort of sound. I assume I could find something for one of these pieces of software...
Thanks again sir!

Ok here is some of the stuff Ive painted the first two are a couple hand painted "portraits". One of me and one of my Dad. Then a sketch of a tattoo I was asked to design and then some misc. airbrush stuff.
I have had an idea also, for a while I have wanted to take a real photo and paint on top of it. Like a photo of a cave and paint a monster coming out of it, or a real castle and paint a dragon. Since we all live all over the world I'm sure we could get some cool photographs of different places or things from where we live and come up with an idea of painting things onto the picture to fit our theme or concept. Half photography, half paint. That is my idea. And I won't be offended if you do not like my style for album art.

Thanks! That is a fuel tank for a pulling tractor. I painted that too, but I don't really have any good pictures of it. It is one of those really big 2 motor heavy duty pulling tractors.

Wou!! I'm impressed mate! You are VERY talented!! I love the idea of combining photo with painting, including something from our cities! Also a guitar and "GMC" should appear there!

Thank you very much Gab. I really like that first picture, the first thing that popped into my head when I read this was a giant king kong like ape climbing it holding a guitar and some planes flying around him and one of the planes having a GMC banner behind it. Carousel horses are about as metal as you can get, especially when a metal dude sketches it out!! I think you should change the way a lot of folks think about daisies too... Sketch one with a scowl playing an axe! Then name it "Daisy Train"!

You had mentioned these things right before everbody went off the rails of the Daisy train. And I really liked this first picture. Is this still the direction everyone wants to take? If there are other things that people want to have included that represent them or their country, They can list them and I can try to take everything and make one idea out of it. Usually when I am designing something for someone they give me a bunch of ideas so I can get a feel for what they like and what kind of direction they want to go in, and how much artistic liberty I can take. So if anybody else wants to do just like you did Gab that helps a lot, and then I can come up with some ideas or even start rough sketching a couple and you guys can pick. When I first read your post. The first thing that popped into my head was something like King Kong. A big painted ape character holding a guitar hanging off Obelisco, with maybe a GMC shirt on or some planes flying around him like in the movie and one has a GMC banner behind it, or somehow incorporate things that represent all of us into the planes. No one commented on that idea even to tell me it was the worst idea ever, so I didn't know if you guys missed it. So anyway the more ideas that are thrown out there the better idea I can get of what everybody is thinking. The way Gab did it is perfect a picture and a couple things to include.
And I have to say I am very honored to get to do this for all of you.
