GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Phrase Like A King Collab

Posted by: David Wallimann Mar 7 2009, 03:19 PM

Collab is now closed, all spots have been taken.. Look for more of these coming soon!

Hi everyone!
Welcome to my first video collab!

In this exercise I need 10 volunteers to record their best possible lead over the following backing track. You record you take in audio, the video part of the collab just means that I will post a video response with personalized comments to your work. The comments to your will be viewed by the world on Youtube, so make sure you're OK with that before you sign up!

 120.mp3 ( 1.1MB ) : 367

The suggested scales to use here are C harmonic minor or C minor pentatonic.

Because of the nature of the track, it is possible to use some outside notes in there to sound a little out, but don't try this if you are not comfortable with the concept of playing out.

I'd rather have you focus on creating a coherent solo. It doesn't need to be technical, but please focus on clarity of notes and creating something that ties well together.

The deadline for this is set to March the 21st. That gives you 2 weeks to submit your takes on the upload thread.

If you can't make the deadline, try not to sign up and leave the slot for other players. :-)

If you miss this one, don't worry.. I'll have more like that coming up soon!

No problem man, I'll try to be more active with more collabs. :-)

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Mar 7 2009, 03:37 PM

Alright. I know I had to quit the last collaboration, but I'm feeling up for this now, as I have lots of time on my hands after I got fired.

Posted by: sted Mar 7 2009, 04:33 PM

I think this will be difficult for me but would like to give it a go if thats ok, just to be clear that we dont upload video only audio as I havent sorted a decent cam out yet, if thats the case I would like to be in on this!

As for being prostrated across you tube, you never know I might become (in)famous!

Posted by: Velvet Roger Mar 7 2009, 04:36 PM

Awesome backing David, I surely want to be in smile.gif

Any chance on giving us the chord progression?

Glad you're in Roger!
Sure, the chords are:

Cm Cm Ab G
Cm Cm Ab G
Ab G Cm F/C
Ab G Cm F/C

As you can see, some of the chords are not quite supposed to be in the C minor scale, they are borrowed from C Dorian.
Your ears should guide you. If you are unsure, just use C minor pentatonic all the way...

Here are the signups so far:

Tolek
Caelumamittendum
Sted
Velvet Roger

That means there are 3 spots left. Hurry!

Posted by: kaznie_NL Mar 7 2009, 11:03 PM

Count me in! In MTP I'm learning bout modes and triads, so I might be able to write some stuff with the Aeolian mode and for the rest I'll just use my minor penta tongue.gif

Posted by: wrk Mar 7 2009, 11:25 PM

If there is still a spot left i would like to join(?) smile.gif

Looking at this am I correct in saying that I could in principle also use C harmonic minor all the way, except for the F/C chord where I would switch to C Dorian e.g.?

Or alternatively playing C natural minor for the Cm, Ab chords, C harmonic minor for the G chord and C dorian for the F/C chord?

You are absolutely right!!!
It actually will be easier that way!
I'll add that to the opening post...

Pff, those groovy funky backings giving me each time again troubles. The harmony changes are there, but i have problems to hear them properly ... i'm the only one having difficulties with this type of backings?

Very interesting! cool.gif
Sounds like a synth. Would you mind sharing with use how you created this kind of tone? smile.gif

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Mar 9 2009, 04:52 AM

Arh, it's just from the Pandora PX4D. I played around with it a bit, and it probably could get better, but as I wasn't really gonna use it for anything, I decided to quit fooling around with it.

It's just a synth from the Pandora, then turning a few knobs up and down to get the wanted result. smile.gif

Unfortunately the synth on PX4D is not very good and for some reason stops after like 1½ seconds... so you can't really hold a note very long.

Posted by: David Wallimann Mar 9 2009, 01:41 PM

Guys, for that backing track I don't want to make things too complicated.
Just stick to a straight forward C minor pentatonic all the way and you'll be OK.
If you want to add some extra notes, you can venture in a C Harmonic scale.
Sometimes C Aeolian and C Dorian will work too, but not throughout the whole chord progression, if unsure, use the pentatonic and your ears of course!

That was a cool 70's vibe! Just add a couple of lava lamps and ron jeremy and you could be transported back 30 years!! laugh.gif

Posted by: kaznie_NL Mar 14 2009, 11:14 PM

I just wanted to say that I used standard Aeolian mode, (so no Harmonic Minor) and it works fine too... Maybe you need to watch out but I had no problems using it wink.gif

Posted by: kaznie_NL Mar 30 2009, 07:23 PM

Hey David, I couldn't watch my video, it was a private video.

Posted by: Velvet Roger Mar 30 2009, 07:27 PM

Thanks a lot for the video feedback David.

Your comments are spot on and at least one of the reasons for it was the quick and dirty recording I did for this collab smile.gif

Looking forward to your next collab!

Cheers
Roger

As I already said in the PM: thanks a lot for the comments! They´re helpful. I´m really looking forward to your next collaboration! smile.gif

Posted by: enforcer Mar 30 2009, 07:30 PM

Sorry guys but where are the videos? am I missing something? smile.gif

Posted by: kaznie_NL Mar 30 2009, 07:35 PM

Ey David, I'm not sure, but could you check whether my take is put in correct? It sounds Like it's just one chord behind or something... I think my take sounds a lot better in my mix, so please take a look, could just be me tongue.gif

Cruciating tongue.gif I can watch all youtube movies except for mine.

Posted by: enforcer Mar 30 2009, 07:35 PM

Update: Just found them, I am sorry biggrin.gif

in case someone does the same here is the link

Posted by: enforcer Mar 30 2009, 08:12 PM

Thank you David! Your comments are very constructive, and will help me a lot for sure biggrin.gif

I don't know why, is it because where I am from or what I just love the harmonic minor that is why I tend to keep it longer biggrin.gif

Vibrato is one of my basic problems, I had a very fast vibrato and I decided to change it for a wide and slower one and events started to happen... I think I am closer to the happy ending but sometimes I litterally forget the existence of the vibrato notion all together biggrin.gif Meditate on this I will biggrin.gif

Thank you for this great collab and I am looking forward to your next one for sure biggrin.gif

Posted by: sted Mar 30 2009, 09:02 PM

Just watched my reply, thanks for taking the time to do this David, I did struggle with this backing but i will incorporate your suggestions into my practice.

Thanks again!

Posted by: David Wallimann Mar 31 2009, 12:15 AM

So sorry Kaznie!
Your video is now available for everyone to watch!
I will check out the mix later when I get back home...

Posted by: wrk Mar 31 2009, 08:40 AM

Thank you David for the nice comments smile.gif
You are right about your critics on the last part. I thought as well, that i could have played something a bit more interesting at the end ... a less obvious last note and just before it sounds a bit "unstable".

As i said earlier, i have problems to hear the harmonies on this kind of backings. Which often ends a bit unsatisfied as i don't know if this what i play makes sense .. laugh.gif I needed quite a while to get ideas for this one, so i'm glad to hear that it pays off to spend a bit more time as usual and that you liked the result.

Thank you for taking the extra time to give video comments !! I enjoyed and learn a lot in this collab.

Posted by: David Wallimann Mar 31 2009, 01:26 PM

Glad you did!
You guys all did a great job, really!

Kaznie, did you see that I fixed your video?
Also, you are right, I messed your track in the final mix. I'm posting the new one today.
However I did have the right one when I was commenting on your take. :-)

Posted by: kaznie_NL Mar 31 2009, 04:04 PM

Thanks a bunch David! You're quite right about the high notes... solo sounds much more developing if you start low and go up a bit. I think I'm going to re-record, starting out lower, then scraping one of the licks and use that space to build up to the higher ending.

To the rest: Wow wink.gif This is, I think, the collaboration with the most potential I've played in tongue.gif I thought I did ok, but the your takes were just twice as good wink.gif Great work!

Posted by: sted Mar 31 2009, 06:12 PM

Yeah I really enjoyed this, sign me up for the next one David im ready!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: kaznie_NL Mar 31 2009, 07:01 PM

Indeed, cool backings like these are a joy to play over wink.gif
