GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Pick Size

Posted by: glengraf88 Mar 12 2009, 04:11 AM

I was wondering what size pick evryone would use. I have tried a couple but nothing felt right.

Posted by: UncleSkillet Mar 12 2009, 04:17 AM

I'ts really a personnel thing and what ever feels good to you. I have found a heavier pick like .096mm or 1.00mm felt pretty good when I started. Now I use the Jazz III XL picks and I really like the way they feel.

A rule for me is thinner picks for stumming (like accoustic) and thicker ones for playing solo's.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Mar 12 2009, 04:18 AM

dava master control picks are all i use.. best pick out there, ive been using the same pick for over 6 months, playing every night

Posted by: Andrew6 Mar 12 2009, 04:27 AM

I also use the Jazz III's and they are great for picking but like UncleSkillet said thinner are easier to use when it comes to strumming and also give a softer kind of vibe

Posted by: glengraf88 Mar 12 2009, 04:34 AM

ok cool i think i will try a thinner pick for this lesson i was useing a 1mm i think ill try a .56 or something around there for this lesson.

Dunlop 2.0mm (violet with a turtle image:) and I`m searching for something 2.2-2.4 (with very hard edges) it will be the best, maybe some ideas?
V-picks im my opinion just can`t be very fast, they`re too thick!

Posted by: Daniel Robinson Mar 12 2009, 10:15 AM

I like a nice beefy pick, i use Jim Dunlop giant stubbies (2.0mm) I like the little divet in the middle of the pick too, makes it easier to grip.

I generally use those all the time, but....for occasions where i am going to be ALOT of strumming i use a thumbpick. That way it never slides out of my hand and i can get as crazy as i want to with strumming and its always going to be in the same position.

I use Jazz III's. I find them great for everything ^^

Posted by: -Zion- Mar 12 2009, 11:06 AM

v-pick medium pointed..

bought it by accident really.. i bought the "Fab Four Package" and a very thick pick, and noticed that i could get a little leather holder to sit with my keys.. This leather holder included the pick i now use and have been since i got them.. awesome pick..

Small picks are not something that I can play with properly, so regular size ones are my choice.
From recently -
Dunlop Gator 0.96,

and before Dunlop Jazz III XL.

+1 on 1.5 mm picks !

Besides that one I use a bit lighter pick which is 1.14 mm wink.gif

Black Dunlop Jazz III picks for me, all the way... biggrin.gif

I found that they have a slightly more rugged surface than the red ones mellow.gif , and give me a better grip.

For fast playing, thicker are better, though sound is also important, lighter picks give brighter sound!
Try every pick you can find!

I've tried Big Stubbys, Jazz IIIs, V-Picks, etc, and my favourite pick is a Stagg 0.71mm. smile.gif

V-picks all the way for me now. Tried out plenty of others, but v-picks are just great for me (started with the medium-rounded, but recently went to the small-pointed (which increased my speed considerably), the tone is really nice (and yes you can play very fast with a 2.75 mm pick! smile.gif )

Posted by: superize Mar 12 2009, 08:44 PM

Dunlop lucky 13 1.00 mm

Posted by: mattacuk Mar 12 2009, 09:07 PM

For strumming guitarists often prefer lighter gauge flimsy picks, for speed picking thicker is best smile.gif I use Dunlop Gator grip 1.14 mm. I would advise stocking up on a few different varietys so you can try each out smile.gif

I used to use these until I tried the black jazz III's, which is what I use now. Those gators never seemed very hard material to me, I went through a couple of them very fast.

That is a definate downside to the gators, I love the way they play but my PGM is typically blue after I use one laugh.gif laugh.gif and im just left with a stub after a couple sessions

Yeah i noticed that too, sliding\pinch harmonics kills those pretty quickly, and harmonics are much weaker compared to those Dunlop 2.0mm with turtle picture:) (don`t know the name, they are with rounded end, not kinda triangular). I used that 1.5mm earlier.

The Tortex ones? I think I may go back to those to be honest, they dont tend to wear down so bad. I think i may try 1.5mm or even 2mm it can only add to my control ^ ^

V-picks medium pointed. I also bought a bunch of picks and a holder and got the medium pointed in the holder. I only use it now..

Posted by: Vasilije Vukmirovic Mar 13 2009, 02:44 PM

I love those with crocodile. I remember few years ago I watched some country player use pure METAL picks, I mean like you're holding coin:)....But sound is....different.

As a scientist, I decided I would like to find out what pick works for me about 6 months ago - especially after there was a lot of hype about V-picks. So I went out and picked up as many different picks I could find. By no means did I have all the relevant picks out there but I got a pretty good sample. I then tested each pick randomly and played a couple of riffs that I play well mixing them and changing the order of the picks (essentially eliminating as much bias as I could). I used about 6 different measures including brightness, comfort, excessive noise or squeaking, etc. and gave them a rating from 1-5.

For strumming (not really something I was focusing on) - I ended up going with the thinner Dunlop nylon (red one I think was 0.67mm). It was the pick I had been using for years along with the 1mm nylon pick. I suspect the choice was perhaps based on experience and ended up going with what was comfortable.

For picking (and what I was most interested in), I ended up picking out the V-pick small pointed, followed by the stubby (2mm light purple one I think). Third (tied) was the V-pick screamer and the Jazz III.

Obviously suitability of picks are related to one's own style and approach so the order I present is for me only but if you want to have some fun, try a bunch of them and rate them.

I like the Cool Phat Cat picks. 1.5mm. Or 1.3mm.

http://elderly.com/accessories/items/PKPC-1.50.htm

It is not wasted money, on all the picks you buy trying to find the one you like. Put a hundred or so in a little bag, it makes a great cat toy, the cat attacks it, swats it around. Don't close the bag, I think part of the game is knocking all the picks out on the rug. I like using the little bags that I get at the dog park, for picking up dog poop, they are just the right size. Of course, an unused one.

I love the huge dunlop big stubbys They are thick, round edges, which make them smooth for strumming as well.. Just love em!

If you like those, have you tried some of the V picks? They are expensive, but if you like those, I bet you would LOVE the V Pick Diamond. 10 bucks though. Expensive cat toys if they don't work out. The material they are made of has a nice sound, that is what makes them special I think.

edit: or one of their others, they have all kinds, some maybe $4. some real stubby ones, all kinds. bet you would find one you love, it you like those that you showed.
