Today mr Fernandez is out exploring uncharted territory with his Experimental Guitar Soloing lesson.

So my question for you is...

Who is the king of experimentation on the guitar?

Maybe not the kings, but I believe Tom Morello and Buckethead have done crazy stuff with their guitars and still manage to sound good smile.gif

Mattias "IA" Eklundh is my candidate. He's used dildos, chopsticks etc instead of picks and he's just awesome.

John McLaughlin made progression with Mahavishnu Orchestra wich is still progressive in present time !

Alan Holdsworth is a UFO. smile.gif

Tough questions. There are a lot of guitarists that like to do experimental things, but not all of them are good. Tom Morello has done some wacky stuff but I don't think I would call him the king of it.

I definitely agree with IA Eklundh as far as crazy experimentation goes. Also I guess one of the pioners was definitely Hendrix - it's weird to think that prior to him people didn't really use the electric guitar as the fantastic instrument it is.

In my opinion you're right on the spot!

The word "experimentation" is often used lightly. My definition of experimental are those guys.
But...of course there are guys like Eklundh that use extended techniques that qualify as experimental into a context of non experimental music.

Very interesting Ramiro - I guess you are right about this. Most of us listen to [somewhat] commercial music and we don't really get in tough with the truly experimental music.

Neil Haverstick has made some pretty wierd music with more than 12 tone equal-tempered guitars. That means that instead of dividing the octave in 12 tones equaly far apart he divides the octave up in 19, 22, 35 or more tones with equal distance apart.

Hendrix was experimenting with guitar and effects in the time when people didn't even think about doing such things. So, he is the king of experimentation, because like Adrian said he initiated the whole thing. Of course, various artists took the things a lot further later on, but only after him smile.gif
