Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Guitar: Paul Reed Smith, Swamp Ash Special
Amp: Line6 Pod HD500, Dr.Z Route 66 Model.
Effects: Light 4:1 compression, Room Reverb (very low in mix), 22ms delay panned to right side.

This was a great intro to hybrid picking. Theory wise, I also gained a good understanding of how pentatonic minor and dorian scales can fit nicely together. The tune uses Aminor pentatonic and Adorian. It's funny, while practicing this I was messing around with the "smart harmonizer" on my HD5000 with the harmony set at 3rds. It was a good exercise cause for 3rds to work, you have to know what key you're playing in. Well, you might say that this tune is in the key of Aminor, but more accurately it's in Adorian which is equivalent to Gmajor. This of course is because A is the 2nd note in the Gmaj scale. This corresponds to the 2nd mode of Gmaj, which is Adorian. Now, at first I kind of blew this off as saying "that's obvious", but when using the harmonizer set to thirds, you've got to know what key you're playing in so that you can set the harmonizer properly. And this harmonizer only has "key" settings, not "mode" settings. So knowing a little about the fretboard, I messed around until I discovered that I'm really playing in the "key" of G when playing this tune because the notes of Adorian are the same as those of "G" and the notes of Aminor Pentatonic are a subset of the notes in Adorian. After discovering this, I quickly set my harmonizer to the key of "G" and got hours of entertainment playing along with the thing. It's funny how you can discover stuff that you hadn't set out to discover at all. Anyway, thanks Stephane for a great lesson and a great sounding tune to work on hybrid picking with. Now, if you've read this far, first of all thanks, and second of all, you might as well watch the video smile.gif ...

Great take James!

Glad that you find the lesson useful, both for theory & technique!

PS : Transpose the pentatonics licks in Bm & Em, you'll get some new "colors"...

Well played mate, nice timing and tone. smile.gif There were some minor timing issues on couple of notes, but nothing serious.
