Ok, im starting this topic for anyone out there who is looking for examples of recording setups.
I would like people to post their home studio's with a list of equipment/setup/pros and cons/price/etc (and maybe even a picture?) I feel this would help anyone wanting to try and set up their own studio i'll post mine as an example post. LIST OF EQUIPMENT Not very good pc M-Audio Delta 66 with breakout box stereo speakers with subwoofer Line 6 POD X3 Live Cubase SX3 EZDrummer DESCRIPTION The M-Audio Delta 66 with breakout box is a proffessional sound card that slots into my motherboard, it has a box which connects to the coundcard allowing 1/4" jack inputs (there are inputs on the sound card but i never use them). On this box there are 4 inputs and 4 outputs (or 2 of each when acting stereo). I connect my speakers to 2 outputs giving me stereo sound. I have listed examples of how i record instrements below. EXAMPLES GUITAR/MIC/BASS The guitar/mic/bass plugs into the POD X3 Live and uses its patches and tones which then gets sent to 2 inputs (stereo) which then record seperatly on 2 different tracks in cubase. KEYBOARD I plug the keyboard straight into one of the inputs and record onto one track on cubase. DRUMS For drums I use EZDrummer, however i attempted to record drums using a mixer with 16 inputs which then output to one of the inputs on my PC, I had very little mixing choices once recorded as all drums were on one track. PRO'S -this setup is great for recording everything but drums -very easy to use -allows latency free monitoring of what your playing -can be used as an amp/PA when using the POD X3 CON'S -not enough inputs for drums -when plugging straight into the inputs with a microphone/guitar/etc you need a preamp as the signal is too weak -fairly costly PRICES POD X3 - £300 M-Audio Delta 66 - £130 Speakers - £80 Cubase SX3 - cant remember now, think i payed around £80 for it from a friend EZDrummer - £79 TOTAL - Around £670 (without leads/guitars/mics/etc) This post has been edited by muntahunta: Jan 4 2008, 10:18 PM -------------------- Guitars: Epiphone Les Paul Standard w/ Dual EMG 81 Pickups. OK here's mine (I'll have to hide this post from the wife ):
Hardware: PC - made it myself 3 years ago, dual 19 inch monitors Laptop (Phil Rees) RME HDSP 9652 (2 off) - audio card RME ADI2 AD/DA interface Neve Portico 5032 Mic preamp Engl 530E preamp Eventide Eclipse harmoniser/effects procerssor Tannoy DBX6 monitors Event Ear05 monitors Thon RLD power conidtioner Behringer DDX3216 mixing console Yamaha 01vR mixing console (currently out on long term loan to wife) Midiman USB midisport 4x4 Roland/Boss GT8 processor E-MU Proteus 2500 Roland GI20 guitar/midi interface Akai MPD16 midi pad controller Frontier Tranzport remote. Shure SM 57 Shure SM58 (2) Rode NT1A Matchless Lightning 15 (plus THD Hotplate) Roland Jazz Chorus Sennheiser EH 2200 headphones Main software: Reaper - sequencer Ableton Live 6 - sequencer Cubase SX 2 - sequencer (no longer used) Reason 3 Audacity Melodyne 3 Har-bal 2 Ozone Kontakt 2 Battery 1 Sylenth 1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Description: Home made pc is optimised for audio. Contains 2 RME audio cards sync locked and also digitally linked to the to the mixing console, Eventide Eclipse and RME ADI-2. PC has both internal SATA (4 drives) and two external SATA drives for music software and data. Internal Satas are mirrored arrays. Plus 1 very fast o/s drive - o/s is XP. Neve and console and RME ADI2 provide XLR and TRS inputs for external equipment. Neve acts as my high end mic preamp and eq. Neve is (currently) linled to the Rode on line 1 and to the Engl on line 2. Engl also has the Eventide on its effects loop. Neve and Eventide feed into the RME ADI2 for AD and then to RME 9652. Everything else goes to the console. Tannoy are main monitors and the Event are used for monitoring stems, busses etc plus comparison of mixes and masters (along with headphones). I'm looking towards getting a better mic later this year to match the Neve and possibly switching out the ADI2 for a Rosetta or similar. Tranzport is a remote controller for the software sequencers. I don't play keyboards at all I have a very basic midi keyboard) so I use guitar to midi instead. Hardware feed to the Proteus is now rarely used - usually go to a software synth. ---------------------------------------------------- Use Guitar - either goes to the Engl preamp/Eventide and then via the Neve/ADI2 to the pc OR I mic one of the amps, usually 2 mics (Shure and Rode) OR (rarely) direct in to the console/Neve and I reamp later, OR via the GT8 to the console as stereo. One guitar can also act as a midi controller. Bass - I cheat and use the harmoniser or a software bass. Drums - use the MPD16 to write drum sequences or use software like Spectrasonics RMX. Vocals - Rode to Neve/ADI2. I use Melodyne and Eventide for vocal procesing and correction quite a bit. Other - I use Kontakt for choirs and orchestral samples and then various softsynths (Atmosphere and Sylenth particularly) for pads, lead synths, brass stabs etc. Various software effects/processors - mainly from Sonalksis and a SIR convolution reverb. Har-bal for eq balance and normalising and Har-bal and Ozone for mastering. Pros Very clean path and the AD conversion is pretty good. Lots of headroom - Neve can run a ribbon mic - 66 dB of gain. Also the Neve is a very good, imo, mic pre with an excellent eq. RME has a great noise floor - about 130dB snr. Good, imo, recording quality. Very low latency (5ms with no drop outs/pops/clicks) and can go lower. Possible to take guitar through preamps to recording with no power amp - so can record and monitor at low volumes an electric guitar into a tube preamp. Eventide - short of spending 10,000s of Euros is a great studio effects processor. Lots of analogue inputs on different forms (XLR, line etc.). Can take a digital out direct to a cd writer for rendering/mastering. Word clock for syncing the kit. Cons Complicated and a mess of different connections and wires. Not cheap. Takes a lot of time to get to know your way around it. Can be a nightmare at times working out connections and audio paths . It's also a pain at times working out what form your on - ie working out how an xlr analogue signal converts to digital - was it optical, optical ebu or spdif. It's sort of frustrating when you switch it all on - everything lights up you have a signal registering but no sound. You get to knw your way around but when you unhook anything and rehook it can be a right royal pain in the bum. Last time I toook it all apart and put it back together (just before XMas) it took 2 hours to work out the connections on paper then 2 days to unhook and rehook everything . - and that was despite getting the connections right first time (yea for planning it ). Get one wring and it's a nightmare to work out what's wrong. Mics are not as good as the Neve. Monitoring is hampered by poor room acoustics. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prices (ouch) - all in Euros and as I remember them - the rig was built up over quite a few years RME HDSP 9652 - 550 each RME ADI2 - 500 Neve Portico 5032 Mic preamp - 1500 Engl 530E preamp - 300 Eventide Eclipse harmoniser/effects procerssor - 2200 Tannoy DBX6 monitors - 550 Event Ear05 monitors - 200 Behringer DDX3216 mixing console - 800 Yamaha 01vR mixing console (currently out on long term loan to wife) - 3500 Reaper - 70 Ableton Live 6 - 300 Cubase SX 2 - 600 Reason 3 - 300 Melodyne 3 - 600 Har-bal 2 - 70 Ozone - 200 Kontakt 2 - 250 Total - about 15000Euros once you include leads and stuff but not including guitars and guitar amps. I'll take a photo sometime this week of it lit up. Cheers, Tony -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. Here is what I use:
Computer: Self made computer with AMD 2800 processor 768MB RAM Dual monitors Hardware: Line 6 Spider 3 15w Amp MXL V67G condenser Microphone TASCAM US-122 interface Software: Cubasis VST US-428 (came with my interface) Band-in-a-Box 2007 accompaniment software (pro version) Audacity wave editor nbxsoft File conversion program (to convert .wav to .mp3) I found out it works best for me to mic my steel string acoustic directly but my classical sounds better through the amp. I mic my amp on all occasions because I find that it actually gives me a better tone quality. The microphone I use is probably the most expensive part of my setup ouside of my guitar but it has a great frequency response that is pretty flat all the way across and a carodoid pattern which helps to eliminate some of the background noise. -------------------- Ibanez AS73-TCR, Esteban American Legacy Starlight Limited Edition, Esteban Granada Classical, Esteban Midnight Steel Limited Edition Line 6 Spider III 15w Listen to my music on MySpace Buy AS73 at Musiciansfriend.com |

@tonymiro What can I say man, you're sick - definitely G.A.S. - promise you won't tell my wife mate . I do have a friend who took receipt of a brand new SSL desk (about 1/4 million UK Sterling) last year plus he spent another 30,000 converting his barn and soundproofing it and then a bucket load of cash on various outboard. That's for home recording btw - not for a pro studio . Me jealous ? Cheers, Tony -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. How did you get the NI Kore free? They had a promotion in which it was free if you bought 3 or more other NI products. I bough NI Komplete 4 which has about 10 products in it so I got Kore for free. To be honest, I don;t use it much, I think it would rock for a keyboard player, but I don't need another interface and I don't need the tweakability of keyboard patches that it gives you, since I usually pick one or 2 pads and bases and leave it at that - the guitar is where all the action is! How do you find the Behringer monitors? I have HiFI speakers at the moment and whilst they are good they aren't ideal monitors. I really want a pair of Adam A7s but that will take some significant saving -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
