In this case the bands were voted by the fans. And if you go read the forums of metal sites, a lot of people are arguing that the voters didn't know what they were doing. If it were a panel then people would probably accuse them of being elitists. There is unforutnately no way around this. But I think that the American Music Awards have probably the best solution. Instead of "Best" this or that... They have "Favorite...". This is a lot harder to debate.
