GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Completed : Gmc Medley - Collaboration

Posted by: lavendell Jan 4 2008, 03:26 PM

Hey GMC’ers

I believe most of us have our own favorite GMC lesson, which we love to play over and over again. And maybe you've played it so much by now that you even know it “insideout” smile.gif

So what about creating a GMC medley together? biggrin.gif

My idea is this;
State your favorite lesson in this thread (I prefer if you post the link to it as well) and also what part of that lesson you want to play/like the most.
Lets keep it at a minimum of 5 seconds – and maximum of 20 seconds.

I will create a backing track with all these different parts of lessons/songs (I’ll try to “glue” them together in a nice way), and then you can record it and post your files here as usual smile.gif

Here’s the challenge: You may not have the luxury of playing in the original key, as you’re used to! huh.gif
Lets say for example that someone pick my vibrato lesson which is in A-minor, and then you pick Muris alternate picking 1 in B-minor, then I might ask you to play it in the key of A-minor, instead of B-minor (just to make the passages flow smoother)

You don’t necessarily have to play it note by note as in the original lesson (and it don’t have to be at the original full speed). You are allowed to improvise, and even make your own arrangement to the backing track if you want biggrin.gif Just let me know how you want it, and I'll do my best to adjust it for you wink.gif

I think this will be a lot of fun! Who’s in? smile.gif

Hi Markus, I dont think it`d need to be as the original, I like the idea of maybe a little improvisation around the lesson basis, so your backings could maybe just follow the feel/idea of the original?

If you later on decide you want some extra cymbals or maybe the sound of a car crash in there, or something like that laugh.gif , we can just add that later biggrin.gif

This really is a great idea Marcus. Something to think about in another collaboration which would be similar to this, is for people to take individual parts of one lesson and play them and then you could mix them all together.

I think that would be cool too. You would already have the backing tracks done so it would be less work. This collab though, is much better than that because you are essentially creating a new song out of several lessons which is going to sound great! smile.gif

Gosh Marcus this is such a cool idea I have to try something!
My absolute favourite lesson is Muris' SRV style http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/srv-stevie-ray-vaughan-lesson/
But I'm not sure I can do it justice ohmy.gif though I will do my best...
I'd like to do the beginning till 00.20 (or 00.26 if you want to get the whole first 12bar rhythm bit) if that's ok and will fit in with all the other songs GMC'ers have chosen.

You got it exactly right smile.gif

One important thing though. You must send two mp3 files; One mp3 where your playing is mixed with the backing track. And one mp3 with your guitar only (ie: without the backing track)

I prefer if you keep the track as dry as possible (no effects, compresson or eq)

smile.gif ok Marcus...But, no big deal and stress, please....you don`t have to make anything special... I will try to put Muris´ lesson style into your backing track (your drums backing track doesn´t have to be in 7/8, 9/8 or others oriental rhytm, it can be in 4/4). Alternativ is, that you can send just drums backing track f.ex. in 4/4, key, and I will do the rest. wink.gif

Well yeah, you can have bunch of different grooves and rhythms all in 4/4,
it depends of accents INSIDE of bar. smile.gif

Good question!

Yes, if you can't play it in full speed, it's good if you can tell me what bpm you want!

But I figured I will do the parts in the original tempo at first. Then if someone have trouble nailing it at full speed I can very easily just slow it down, so I don't think it will be any problems. smile.gif

I hope I get the backing track finished by this weekend! smile.gif

and also I would like to play it till the end.

Okay marcus, I recorded it twice. In the backing track version it's your track (cut down to just my part) and both takes:

 medleycollaball3.mp3 ( 444.95K ) : 558

Here are the two takes I did, ones on my piezo pickups and the other is in neck middle position. If you want, you can use only one instead of a harmony tongue.gif Up to you, whatever you think sounds best.

 medleycollabharmony1.mp3 ( 445.77K ) : 487

 medleycollabharmony2.mp3 ( 435.97K ) : 501

I didn't play it exactly as Gabe did so if you want me to do so let me know smile.gif

Personally I'm not 100% sold on the harmony idea myself so I'll let you guys decide smile.gif

Marcus,

I've effectively managed to destroy your nice lead with my hideous performance blink.gif .
Anyway, attached is my piece. After many tries I finally had to give up on getting it right, so here it is mistakes and all - sorry. Maybe you can work some magic, but there may not be enough magic to fix this one. sad.gif Oh well - you can always turn it down realy low in the mix! tongue.gif Sorry for the delay!
The video doesn't have sound. I couldn't figure out how to mix them together.

Sure, if there's no other way. Then try to record it that way and we'll see if the quality is good enough. But remember that it's not good if the backing track is heard.

I agree with you Twibeard, Marcus must have gone to a lot of effort to put this amazing backing track together, I`m not sure who is left to upload but I really think they ought to either say now if they cannot do it for any reason (so Marcus maybe able to edit out) or upload asap!
Its really not fair on Marcus or the others that have made the effort to upload their takes.

Posted by: Nick325 Apr 12 2008, 10:58 PM

hey guys quick update i got the video recorded and i imported the audio (backing track) but when it mixes them together it starts the backing track from the beginning. so could someone kindly take the backing track and just keep my part and start 3 seconds before it and then post it here. after that ill have it up in a few mins. thanks
