Hello. I thought it would be great to have some lessons (maybe a series) on how to transcribe a song - when you hear a song that you really like, what steps do you take as a guitarist to figure out how to play it? Is there a particular piece of software or gear that you use to slow down the song in order to master those fast licks, complex chords, or heavy riffs? Are there any tricks to duplicating that famous guitarist's tone? Etc.

Maybe one of the instructors could even take another instructor's "famous" lesson and show how they would go about transcribing it if they didn't have any guitar tabs for it... cool.gif Or maybe one instructor could post an mp3 file of a piece they're working on, and another instructor could do a lesson as they are actually transcribing it.

I think this would be a great lesson series: start with a fairly simple lesson and then do an intermediate and an advanced one.

Thanks,
MattG

I am aware that transcribing is much needed tool
for every guitarist but lesson might be problem.
And here's why. smile.gif

It's very long process of ear training, visualizing fretboard etc.
And you can't just explain/learn how to transcribe fast runs or
complex chord progression without trying the most simplest stuff first.

So I am not rejecting lesson of this kind at all,
I'm just saying that it would need veeery long serial of lessons,
starting with ultra simple things to transcribe,
then slowly moving up ahead. smile.gif

Yeah, i can completely see that. But, instead, maybe you can do a lesson in which you explain HOW you trained your ear and fretboear visualisation, you know what I mean? Just to tell how you did it. So we can go from that.

Muris,
I definitely understand what you're saying. So how about an "Introduction to Transcribing" series, beginning with very simple stuff? Maybe a slow song with a basic structure: a simple intro. riff, a verse with some basic power chords, and a chorus with some "altered" power chords? And then see where it goes from there... Add a slow, melodic solo, etc.

That is fair idea to start with. smile.gif
Just bare in mind that we cannot
transcribe popular songs for the lessons.

No, thats the fun part, cuz we can get to learn HOWTO subscribe those ourselves! I know this man on youtube, solodallas, he does amazing ac/dc covers and more. www.youtube.com/solodallas . He does everything by ear, just slows a part down on AUDACITY without changing pitch and learns it. He does all ac/dc solo's flawless!

This is a good example to start with!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQRpc7lKMFo Rllly usefull

Transcribing would be very useful. I'm alright at it but i just sort of guess and find the right thing quite quickly.

Especialy chords pls. That's the basic, solos come later and are often easier. I've been busy with this, and also opened some threads about it. If you want to get going, check justinguitar.com for more info on the subject.

Little tip I got from my dad mixed with a tip from Justin: stop a song after the first chord so that you have the sound in your head, then slide up the low E string until you found it, maybe redo this like three times, and you'll have the first chord. Then decide major or minor (7, +9, sus4 blabla comes later, bit to hard to get going on that already tongue.gif )

UPDATE: We realy need such a lesson tongue.gif

great idea..

And i think the main idea is to get us started with it..
just something where you say..
"okay.. first thing is to listen for chord changes.. is the pitch going up or down.. Next step. find your guitar.. etc. etc.."

dont think you need to actually transcribe a song
