GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Volbeat Style Collab

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 12 2017, 01:51 PM

Hello friends!! Welcome to a new GMC Collab!

Cael suggested me working on a Volbeat style one so I've checked my lesson based on them and decided to go for this backing since it has a big potential to become a hit! The idea is to create a real song track so we will need guitar solos, arrangements, melodies and off course lyrics and vocals.

The backing is in 150 bpm, and the key is D major (You can use D major pentatonic and/or B minor pentatonic).

All the additional info about the track can be found https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Volbeat-Style/.

If you are new to collabs please check out this: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=58277

Backing track:
 Volbeat_Collab.mp3 ( 2.49MB ) : 383

Deadline: July 3rd.

WHO IS IN?

If I did something like this for an intro would it be ok?

That's awesome, Phil! smile.gif

Thanks Ben,

I've never heard of Volbeat so I just listened to the lesson page, it was a one shot take to see what Gab thought about it.

Cheers buddy smile.gif

Hi Phil, I think that you've used D minor pentatonic and the best scale for this is D major / B minor. Am I right?

Lol, yes, sorry, I was using artistic freedom tongue.gif Seriously though, I am that used to playing minor I found the root and went for it rolleyes.gif At the moment my ears can't differentiate. But, in the correct key, would something like that be ok?

The main issue here is the note choice for the strong beats related to the chords. You tend to play a major or minor second. For example, analyze the first bend and compare it with the chord sounding. That happens most of the time in this one. Try to target notes from the chord at first, thirds for example.

About your question, yes, experiment with the right key. Let's use this as a workout. Feel free to share more tries. (and please remember to share the only guitar file for the last take).

Sounds like a plan!! I"ve been using odd keys and Major scales in many of my shred challenges as well. I do find that it can throw folks off just a pinch, but that's where the most learning happens imho smile.gif In the spots that we are a bit jiggy on.

Hello Gab,

I've been looking at this again and I now know where I went wrong, if you read your first post it says "The backing is in 150 bpm, and the key is B major (You can use B major pentatonic and/or D minor pentatonic)."

It didn't sound right to me but I didn't know why as I don't trust my ears and I was following instructions tongue.gif biggrin.gif

Here's another go wink.gif

Hi Cael! Sounds good! Please define with more precision the notes that you are singing. We need that the pitch sounds the more precise possible, because I'd like to harmonise this lead vocal. Learn the melody in your guitar and sing along to adjust pitch and we will have a hit.

Thanks! This was a great backing! I ripped most of the licks off of Paul Gilbert of course smile.gif He does some great things with a blues scale at break neck speed. This axe makes it really easy to pull off as well. It's just freaky how easy this thing is to play. Never had a neck this thin and straight before with fretwire this new. My RG560 was 10 years old when I bought it, so it had some mileage on the neck/frets, etc. this one was a "case queen" so its' basically a new guitar. I never knew guitars could be this good honestly. It's almost cheating!!

Ok, here's the Lyrics so far!

Where Angels fear to Tread
I saw Rivers turn to Blood
In the name of Devils and Gods
Heard the Angels scream instead
Where Man once feared to tread

Fury unleashed on ravaged Earth
Spirits ripped from their fragile roots
The Gods hid and Devils fled
Where Angels fear to tread

Visions of vengeful destruction
As far as the eye can see
Sodden Earth where they had bled
Where even Devils fear to tread

A Maelstrom of Man-made Mayhem
Panoramic in it's entirety
No Gravestones to mark the Dead
Where Angels, Gods and Devils fear to tread

Thanks Gabe!! I made this one just for you actually. I tried to stay within a "Blues" framework but still going to crazy shred now and then, but slowing down for some bends/vibrato for counterpoint. Glad you like it smile.gif I just got the guitar. They are VERY rare and it's the best playing instrument I've ever touched. The action is the same height at the 24th fret as it is at the 1st!

Are we getting closer to a final version?

D Major would work well smile.gif I used D BLUES pretty much the entire time and added a few notes in for good measure. smile.gif Basically starting the blues scale on the 10th fret. The root being low E 10th fret. D string 12th fret. High E 10th fret. As long as you land on those roots now and then, it will help tie your solo together. Also bending from the G string up a whole step will work.

Hope this helps smile.gif

That's up to you. I'll define the structure based on the guitar solos that we get and off course on the vocals. If you have more ideas, write them, if now, I can repeat a verse if it's necessary.

I'll try and get some vocals down in the following days. My mom was here till a couple of hours ago. She was here for 3-4 days, where I then couldn't record vocals. I hope that's okay, Gabriel smile.gif

Cool Ben, I'll wait to hear what you do and maybe add some Backing Vox (this isn't my normal style so I'm a bit out of my league!!)
There's one more verse too:-

A Maelstrom of Man-made Mayhem
Panoramic in it's entirety
No Gravestones to mark the Dead

I'll add that to the original Lyric post too.

Been working on the vocals for the past hour. Let's see if some of it is useful smile.gif Will upload in a bit.

Let me know if any of this can work and I will either keep these if they're good enough or maybe redo if needed.

It was sometimes difficult to make the lyrics fit though, which is maybe obvious in some parts. I like the lyrics though!

Also difficult to channel my inner Michael Poulsen. He has a very special voice.

That's great Todd! Well done!

I've been inviting some GMCers that will be working on something this week. I think that the track deserves more soloists so let's give this some more time and cross fingers for new submits!

Hi Gab,

I receveid your Private Message
On which section I have to play ?

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jul 17 2017, 02:58 PM

I noticed there's some talk in the background at some points, maybe from outside. I don't know if I can redo and capture the same spirit though.

Great to see you here MisterM!

You can choose the part that you find more inspiring for jamming. Check out the singing version shared by Cael to have an idea of the vocal melodies.

Here is my intro. My ear must be getting better because I could not remember what I played on the first take but I knew the scale, I transcribed it all by myself cool.gif . I guess the fact that it was my own piece and I knew the scale I would have used helped a lot but there was a time not long ago that I just wouldn't have been able to do that cool.gif

I left the original in, kinda like a twin lead thing, I think it works but I've put both versions for the Soundcloud downloads.

Great SJ! I think that a good Acoustic intro could work! It could also be used as a part C if we see that it doesn't have enough impact at the beginning.

WHO IS IN?

Everything about it is cool. My fave part is BENS VOCALS and the CHORUS it's catchy!!! I can see this being in rotation on any Rock Station, live or streaming. I hope it gets picked up by various streaming outlets and goes viral. It's just that good. Can't wait to jump in on the next one!!
