I'm sure this has been covered loads of times before but I'm interested in this topic..

Do you think that people who listen to heavier genres of music are more inclined to buy cd's because with metal albums you're not just getting music, you're getting a whole atmosphere with each album ?

The way I look at it, I associate albums with the artwork, the colour, the presentation, the vibe that surrounds the band at that time.. because metal songs usually have stories and sometimes are even concepts that span a whole album, the whole package gives the complete picture. With pop music, the songs are usually 'quick fix' stand alone subjects which are not dependant on a theme so they can be more 'throw away' and work easily with the itunes, download vibe.

Also, do you have a 'go to' place to buy music ? For me, amazon is my fave, it's just so easy. When I'm there I always find myself thinking, 'What else could I get/do I need whilst I'm here ?'

I think people that love music, and not just think of it as a background atmosphere, buys more albums.
A lot of people I know just about listens to anything just to have some background music, training music etc.
These people rarely or never buys an album, because it's just not important to them.
Understandable in a way, but still frustrating for the artists.

I love music, and I love a bunch of different styles, so I buy too many albums.
I'm not sure where to put them anymore

I don't think this is a phenomenon that only applies to fans of heavier genres,
but for people who love music with a passion no matter what style.

I usually buy my albums in a local recordstore, or at a music convention.
If I order online I usually buy from http://www.cdon.com and http://www.play.com

I love the physical cd. It's true what you say about heavier stuff but I know people that like classic rock music and also enjoys buying the original Cd of bands like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Hendrix, and so...
I personally have the problem that I like the artwork but I always listen to music from my computer or ipod so physical cds aren't comfortable to me. So I have that duality, I like physical cds but I don't really use them...

I totally agree! I prefere to actually buy a physical cd, but generally speaking I burn the CD to my Ipod and never pick it up again, since I can play the Ipod virtually anywhere, in the car, through my home stero and don't really need the CD. So I'm kinda stuck between liking to actually buy physical cds and not really needing to use them. Regarding what Ben said about where to go to buy CDs, I also go to Amazon.com. For starters, I can order other stuff as well, such as TV show DVDs and books. Secondly, where I live if you do not like listening to country music or Justin Beiber you are out of luck! Amazon has so much more variety than my local stores, and generally the price is a little better as well.

yeah, that's what happens to me. I also like Amazon but the cds or books take too much time to arrive to my home (15 days).

Looks like I am a minority here. I can honestly say that I love music and actively listen to it, but I am a huge fan of iTunes. I haven't bought a physical CD in like 2 years! Then again, I am not much of a collector when it comes to physical things (except books) and I don't like my flat to be full with stuff (except books ). And my computer is my device for everything (Internet, TV, Music). So I'd copy a CD to my hd anyway.
But I gotta admit, I love reading the booklets, so I am always happy if I get an album on itunes with a digital booklet.

I haven't bought a physical unit in several years. I don't know many people who still do. It's a big part of why the "Biz" has been sliding for several years. I still have my CD collection from the days before I went to "File Based" everything. I still have some DVD's too But those are semi pointless as well. I still netflix BluRay discs though, so I've got some 5 inch plastic discs around here somehwere!

I do miss all the cool artwork and such sometimes But I've learned to live without as most have. There is a saying. "Music Wants To Be Free". Which used to make me really mad, as I'm a musician. But then I realized, Music is (in many ways) about freedom and it makes sense to "make it free". As musicians, we need to find new ways to "monetize" ourselves, our music, etc. It's a brave new world

Myself I don't put too much importance in the actual disc. I used to but nowadays I've lost that appeal to have a physical thing with me while I listen, but I get what you say, it does get you inside the music a bit more,

About 40% of my CD's ship from overseas and take up to 30-45 days


And I love the CD, its like triple the quality of any download source. I can stick an iPod into my computer or car stereo, and it will sound good, very good if its a paid for song.

But, If I throw a CD in there - I can feel it, and I need that. I want to feel the song hit my chest, give me goosebumps, I want the actual physical effects of it as well.

Nothing beats a CD right now, maybe I am being an audiophile of sorts, but I just have to have the highest quality songs possibles. Downloads just dont cut it.
