Why do peaple put tape i nthe neck pick up ?? what does it do ??

It's to keep the high E from getting stuck underneath the pickup. If you whammy dive sometimes it can get stuck underneath there.

That's what I was told anyway tongue.gif I never had the problem.

Enucleation is right!
When you do a dive bomb and the stings become so loose that they lie on top of the body it is possble for the high or low E string to get stuck under the bobbins of the neckhumbucker when you release the tremolo back to the original position....

You mean the tape? No not at all!
Even the chrome metal covers on pickups don't alter the sound much so why should a thin piece of tape do anything.

Metal covers, regardless of being nickel, chrome or gold do remove presence, it's definitely noticeable. One can place a cover on a fairly modern sounding pickup and make it sound a more vintage-like. It's not that much noticeable but the change is definitely there, just to add to Zakk's info.
However, tape won't make a difference, it's only a tape, doesn't affect the magnetic field.
