Digital Downloads cannibalized CD/Tape sales, streaming cannibalized Digital Downloads, now the streaming services are trying to find a way not to lose money every year The numbers for spotify are out and......
-- Spotify’s has announced the 2013 financial results for its global parent company. The headline is a -12% operating loss, down from a -19% loss in 2012. The numbers are in stark contrast to the small operating profits recently reported in Spotify’s UK and France subsidiaries. Both were able to do so because only a portion of Spotify’s costs reside in those businesses. This raises the interesting point of Spotify making efforts to report an operating profit where ever it possibly can to help build an evidence base that its model is sustainable. Which contrasts sharply with Pandora’s prolonged efforts to do what it can to not make a profit in order to help its rate lobby efforts. |

As atavistic as I may be I find the whole 'vinyl thing' just too ironic
My CDs (and CD) player sound really f'n good through my Akai stereo amplifier and PSB speakers. In some ways maybe better than my vinyl - ? -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

A business model in which content creators (in this case musicians) get next to nothing is unsustainable, is good news in my eyes.
Also incase you haven't heard, for folk who sell stuff online: http://www.theguardian.com/small-business-...icro-businesses "From 1 January 2015, EU VAT will be charged in the country where products are bought as opposed to the country where they are sold. The legislation applies to digital products only" Too much too soon. -------------------- Founder of new startup social network site that brings the good aspects of MySpace, Twitter and FaceBook together.

Instead of focusing on the cd sales/download sales side of things (which is shrinking and heading to ZERO very quickly) I'm hoping to steer the conversation towards potential revenues that are actually growing. Yes, the music biz is still contracting and ARTISTS/MUSICIANS are taking a beating financially. Let's just take that as a given and agree that it's just not going to get better. It's only getting worse. Now we can put that aside. Ahem. People who say music and art should be free as some kind of "socialist ideal" would inadvertently have it that only the wealthy can afford to indulge in music, just like how it was a few 100 years ago with aristocracy. Similarly, although many people don't like many politicians (myself included) I do agree they should get paid a wage rather than not, so that "working class" folk can be politicians and not just those who sit on the executive boards of large corporations and don't necessarily need a wage (I'm not saying its not already bad but it would be worse). On the GOOD NEWS side of things VINYL!!! Yup. VINYL continues to be one of the ONLY Growing recorded formats. People are actually BUYING RECORDS AGAIN!! Granted, it's not enough (not even close, not by a HUGE margin) to make up for CD / Download sales, but, at least there is something that's growing. So..... If you have a band, and have some followers, you may actually consider making a "collectible vinyl" release. IT's these types of releases that are actually selling. To wit. Iron Maiden is re releasing their ENTIRE CATALOGUE ON VINYL!!! Of course, if you are still trying to build an audience (E.G. Yearly sales below say 5,000 units all told) then making an LP is not a great idea. Guitar teachers are OK according to this ... http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/column...y-work/6707457/ "The jobs that will persist in the future include those that either take advantage of uniquely-human traits – such as manual dexterity, creativity and emotional intelligence – or that improve the lives of other humans directly in a face-to-face setting. For example, dentists, nutritionists, athletic trainers, podiatrists, elementary school teachers and occupational, recreational and mental health therapists all have a less than 1 percent chance of being replaced by computer software, say Frey and Osborne." -------------------- Founder of new startup social network site that brings the good aspects of MySpace, Twitter and FaceBook together.

BINGO!!! For fans, that is probably the future of purchasing or thereabouts. Getting the limited edition Vinyl and they throw in the digital for free.
With Vinyl, you get something "collectible". It's a bit nostalgic, it's somewhat rare, it's a bit KULT/TRUE as you can't "bootleg" these easily the way you can with CDs. Also it directly supports the artist. I"m all for it Personally I've started collecting the Limited Pressing "Flexi Discs" which come each month in DECIBEL Magazine. IN case you don't know about these, they are like a CD SINGLE but more like a Vinyl Record. All of them can be heard online on their soundcloud account of course for free in digital format ) https://soundcloud.com/decibelmagazine Indeed 180 gram coloured vinyl in a gatefold.... Im buying that everytime Take Belakor, the aussie melodeath band. Probably fair to say they are not the biggest band around at the moment, although for what its worth they are my personal favourite melodeath band. They have 3 CD's out but are releasing their second album remastered for vinyl in a few days. Although I already have it on cd Im totally buying it on vinyl as well. Its also cool to get a digital download with the vinyl. I just got a limited edition of Opeths new album on double vinyl and it came with a digital version. |
