Hey GMC. I recently bought an Epiphone Goth SG (G-400), and I was considering getting some heavier stings, thick enough to tune to drop B for some Slipknot songs. My question is, do you think this guitar can handle this heavy of string gauge? And if so, which strings should I get?
I'm pretty sure any guitar can hold any type of strings besides bass gauge. I would recommend getting elixir strings. They may seem expensive costing around $11 but they last A LOT longer than normal strings. Your getting the bang for a buck with elixirs.
I guess it can, you'll probably need a 12-52 set to get that low, and a new set-up of action, intonation and possibly truss rod too.
Get some Ernie Ball strings, great strings and great sound
Ernie ball 12-56
My vote goes for Ernie Ball as well - great sound, long lasting
I vote for Ernie Ball strings too. I really like their price quality, gonna get some new for my bass actually tomorrow.
Like everyone said, thicker strings like 12-52, or maybe even thicker bass ones + a setup is needed. It may be good to experiment a bit and see what you like the most, but as Marcus said, if you have something that works for you, that would be a good place to start.
I tried Elixir strings and they really sound new for a longer time!
