OK so currently I have a set practice session I do daily. It roughly consists of the following;

10 Minutes Sweeping C Major Arpeggio Shape.
10 Minutes Sweeping A Minor Arpeggio Shape 1
10 Minutes Sweeping A Minor Arpeggio Shape 2
25 Minutes Alternate Picking Etude
30 Minutes Paul Gilbert Prelude and Fugue D Major
10 Minutes Tapping Exercises
15 Minutes A/E Minor Pentatonic Jam.

You will notice the Bach peice is not a GMC lesson, rather a Paul Gilbrt Lesson from Total Guitar Shred Special. I feel i am gaining good alternate picking technique from this and enjoy playing it very much.
Would the instructors recommend I complete this peice correctly and precise,or substitue it with another GMC Alternate picking exercise?

thanks smile.gif

Well i'm no instructor but...

I'v watched that piece as well and all i can say it's a beautiful piece of music. part of my pratice routine i also include a thing from gilbert. the mozart piece "ein klein nachtmusik". good piece for your legato. I'd say go for it. It's looks like your benefitting a lot from it, and you also enjoy playing it. The best of both world...Nail it!

good luck

hey mattacuk - i would say if you want some serious progress you need to make those times atleast x2.

30 minutes of sweeping is not enough if you want to get serious improvement in it!

...just a suggestion...

I think learning songs is a great form of practice, it gets you a better insight into compostition, on top of all the things ive learned to practice here, i usually run through and play along to all the Arch Enemy songs i know (about 10-12 songs total), and lately ive been playing alot of Opeth (only about 4 songs) and of course my favorite practice routine, playing my iron maiden songs (Alot of them...)

I think its great to use other practice routines and blend them together as long as they work for you

When training physical (your body) it's good to change your training routines regularly because your body and mind adapts to your routine and only put up just as much effort as necessary. The body and mind is real lazy and can come up with some serious tricks to not have to work hard. And everything you train, even if it's not directly related to your goal teaches/trains mind and body.

So, my guess is that this applies to guitar too.
Atleast it's refreshing mentally to get a change and helps the fun to stay fun.

YES!!! It should always be fun. Do the boring excercises but break it up with some fun stuff.
I always end the day with some cool riffs or if I happen to nail a difficult piece I never managed before I call it a day instantly. That's 100 times better for the soul and mind to carry with you than ending the day getting stuck with your fingers in the tremolo bleeding all over the place.

Hey,
This is just a rough approximation of a routine I have put together for myself, but is constantly evolving to suit my individual needs! biggrin.gif (what a mouth full blink.gif ). You could try building your own practice routine based on various lessons from GMC.
