Hey guys! Are you ready to rock again??

As some of you may know we've completed modules 1 and 2 for the improvisation course. This new thread is to refresh and strengthen all the lessons and concepts that we've worked during the course.

Module 1: Major Scales

1. Major Scale (Shapes, sequences & arpeggios)
2. Pentatonic Major Scale

Module 2: Minor Scales

1. Minor Scale (Shapes, sequences & arpeggios)
2. Pentatonic Minor Scale

If you have been following the course, you'll find this thread very useful keep on experimenting with this concepts, but if you missed it, this is a second chance to learn the course.

ASSIGNMENT I:

During this first 10 days of practice, we will get into the #Week1 concepts.

These are the guidelines for this first assignment:

1. Watch again the video with explanations (if you don't remember it)
2. Choose a major backing track from our lesson archive. Here are some suggestions:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Pentatonic-Major-Soul/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Melodic-Major-Soloing/

3. Practice the scale shapes, sequences and arpeggios over the backing if you need it.
4. Improvise.
5. Record yourself and share your audio or videos here.

Deadline: December 21th (10 days.)

Feel free to share many takes during the next 10 days.

Finally, It would be great if you have in mind these concepts when working on this assignment: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Your-First-Phrases/

Hi Laurent! Great playing on this one! I like how tasty your melodies are on this recording. One thing that I'd like to mark is that you introduce lots of motifs but you let them go, you don't develop them. Motifs can be rhythmical, or melodic and are short ideas that can be developing creating variations, moving them to different parts of the neck, and things like that, trying to give the listener and illusion of guitar dialog. When doing this kind of motif improvisation, the listener can remember some of them after listening to the solo and he/she will feel that the improvisation let something more on him than just notes and lots of melodies. Does it make sense?

Experiment introducing a motive and developing it.

This lesson can give you some ideas: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/repetition-secrets/

Hi Gab - here comes my take for the current assignment. Thought it might be easier to take a slow backing track but it did not turn out to be really the case. I used this backing track in D major:

Hi Tom! Great to see you working on this assignment!

I can say that your playing is very tasty on this take. I enjoy a lot the first half of your recording. The melodies there are very catchy and your improvisation has a clear direction. In the second half I feel that you lose direction, you keep on around the same elements than the first part but the melodies are not clear. The main reason is that you haven't think on a structure for the whole backing. This is not serious because we've never talked about it before. But this is an example on how you could think this backing.

When improvising you can think on your solo as a story so you can have different parts. One frequently used structure when improvising is A B A'. Another one could be A B C, or simply A B. In the A section, you could introduce the leit motif. A simple melody that introduces a motif that will be developed along this part. Then, in part B, you can contrast part A with different elements as Speed, dynamics (more aggression), aggressive and repetitive bends or whatever can make your playing a bit flashier. After that, if you choose the first structure, you'll get back to the leit motif so you'll have a variation of A or A'.

Does it make sense? Listen to some solos and improvisations, and try to identify structures. Take your own conclusions about it.

Yes, that makes sense. I am here still focused on finding the right notes and playing with the beat but there is no structure behind that. At the end it all ends somewhat lost. Will try to implement your advise next assignment!

Thanks for listening - Tom.

Hi Gabriel

This another one shoot take, with a small theme, i think this one is more coherent than other stuff i can done in the past.

Rendered with barely no fx, payed with fingers and wrong notes of course.

The main record have a lenght of 6m45s, i have shorten it, before you turn crazy.
