A few days ago I noticed that I was having issues (whats new eh laugh.gif ) browsing websites. Some websites would load fine, but most wouldn’t.

I soon realised I had some nastys lurking on my PC, the Trojan.Vundo trojan to be precise. By nature it downloads heaps more malware / trojans too and so my PC was soon riddled! mad.gif Worst of all I coulnt get into the GMC forum, myspace or facebook because of it ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

I tried using the freeware Spybot search and destroy, Adware, and my own licensed copy of NoAdware. To cut a long story short they only removed some of the malware - but not the main offender!

I thought all was lost and I would have to re-install windows, something I didn’t want to do on my new PC because id spent weeks getting it configured dry.gif

By chance I was looking through a tech forum and they recommended "Malwarebytes Ant-Malware". After all else failed, this did a thorough job of cleaning up my system!

If any of you lovely GMC'ers are unfortunate enough to have problems with Spyware / Malware in the future give it a try! (p.s. No I dont work for them ) laugh.gif laugh.gif wink.gif Its free to use, but if you want to register you get further protection so highly recommended smile.gif

Its really great too see what you guys use!! It seems different Spyware / trojans / Malware respond to different applications better. Maybe this thread would be a good Database !!:)

One other bit - which Matt already does - I'd recommend having and using at least two spywares- a single one often misses things. Downside is that you can sometimes get minor conflicts with two - like Matt I use Adware and Spybot and Adware tends to get a bit incie about Spybot being present - but nothing major.

So a database of alternatives sound like a good idea to me smile.gif .

Cheers,
Tony

Yes, they are good. I've thrown out all commercial ones and I've tried most of them. Some commercial ones have more features, but AVG and Avast does what a antivirus kit is supposed to and that's what I want it to. The reason I left the commercial ones is the subscription of them. I find that a hazzle. Plus I found most of them to hog more system resources.
Even though my company pays them I prefer Avast. I have paid licenses for Symantec, Norman and McAfee.
I wouldn't touch Symantec. Norman... well. Didn't like it. McAfee is OK but uses to much resources at times.

I used AVG a long time but now I've switched to Avast. I find it more efficient and friendly to my computer's resources. And I feel Avast is better than AVG at finding viruses, but that's subjective, I've never done any tests on that.
If I remember the free AVG right it is a bit crippled compared to the pro version.

Oh, another important thing, to me at least. I can always download or carry along Avast on a USB stick so I can install it whenever I need it. Wherever I am. Legally.

I would have to agree with you Blindwillie, the commercial products really do hog your system resources, and I could never get used to yearly subscriptions, I think a one of fee would be easier wink.gif

I actually installed Avast last week and I really like it, not most because its freeware but because its alot lighter on system resources as youve mentioned. The symnatec product almost borders on what i call "bloatware" laugh.gif I look after various friends and familys home computers (for a fee of course! laugh.gif ) and I dont think I could cope with having such applications running all the time on my own system.

For me the best software is simple and elegant, something which is simple to update and operate, and something which is useing little system memory.

I feel combining freeware / home use Anti Virus with something like Spybot and Adware just for example is often a better way to go than spending alot of money on bloated applications from PC world! smile.gif Of course, If you like the free software there is the option to buy more advanced versions, which still works out alot cheaper than "commercial" software.

While were on the subject of bloatware, has anyone noticed how alot of todays software requires you to constantly upgrade your hardware? Often people think there computers are out of date, or slow, but really its because they have either too much software running in memory, or the software there useing just hasnt been written in the most efficent way.

Back in the days of the Commodore Amiga, the Spectrum and the Acorn RISCOS computers upgradeing was rarley nessacary, and if you did upgrade it was a simple ram module. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Ladys and Gentlemen, I give you the REAL future of computing !!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I have used avast for quite some time and it works great and it is free. You can get it here http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html I reccommend using the boot time scan, but update the virus definitions first. If the idiots that write these virus' put their skills to better use the world could be a better place. The boot time scan will get rid of a lot of those little buggers before the start as a self replicating service once windows starts. Good luck.

Yes, I noticed that too smile.gif But if you keep smart and really keep in mind WHAT you want to do with the PC, you'll always be fine. Do you want to play games? Write email? Surf the net? Etcetera, if you need to just write stuff even an 8+ years old pc is fine (no vista, obviously tongue.gif) But it's so sad when you see computers that are used exclusively for videotyping with enormous processors and pimped-up video boards, just to run vista's Aero desktop biggrin.gif you think about all those wasted watts!

It's so fun when you go to some friend's house and they just got a new computer, dual-core, vista, 2gbytes ram, etcetera; then you turn it on and you watch the system tray fill up.... 5.... 10... 15.... sometimes even more biggrin.gif and the minutes tick by while the system starts and the friend starts grumbling: "It's so slow, maybe I should get a new one..." This is insane smile.gif

Anyway matty, back on topic, i would recommend Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware: they have two different ways of searching for badware: Spybot has signatures and looks precisely where the spyware would go and fit, while Ad-Aware scans every single file (takes more time but gets more stuff out)

For anti-virus, i recommend not having one smile.gif the best antivirus is your logic and judgement. Plus, if you find a suspect file, there's an online service that scans it with 32 different anti-virus programs biggrin.gif can't remember the link though. And now most webmails like gmail are automatically scanned for viruses, so that's shielded too smile.gif

And one way to add to this is to use a old, cheap pc for all your internet/email and keep it separate from your music pc smile.gif.
You don't generally need an expensive, top of the range pc to browse the internet. If it goes down in flames you don't lose anything important and it's pretty easy to get back up and running quickly.

Wow great minds think alike!! Im one of those people who has a mega powerd pc just for desktop stuff though laugh.gif laugh.gif The main reason I use a pimped up PC is to cope with the multitasking though !:) Any typical day I have multiple applications running at once, Firefox for web development , and of course surfing the web! I might have music running in Windows media player, Photoshop CS3 running with loads of large files, some encodeing going on, image browsers, downloads etc.

A really great tip for people who find there PC's are slow, is of course to make sure you PC is only loading nessacary applications into system memory on startup. Actually, you dont need anything, or very little loading into your system tray.

For the "average" user you only need Anti Virus loading on startup, but any other things can be run from your start menu when YOU NEED them. If your a more advanced user I agree that common sense is better than running system hogging anti virus. When I was an engineer I used to get laughed at by my collegues for recommending this, but if you think about it, you actually need to click on an virus exe in order for it to run! If your sensible about what you run and install on your PC your unlikely to ever get a virus.

Spyware / Malware on the other hand, that is troublesome because its easily picked up from websites, keeping a couple anti malware applications on your pc is always a good idea. Some of the best ones have already been mentioned in this thread! smile.gif

Yes this is another great idea! I have a few ex collegues who do this too. If you can keep your "tidy" pc away from the net and use a cheap one it can save alot of heartache smile.gif

Well video encoding IS a good reason to have a powerful PC smile.gif It would take ages if not... Plus codecs are getting more and more complex (think of H.264 for example) and you need the extra power. And all those heavy programs, they need that wink.gif
But one thing I didn't realize for a long time is that PCs don't actually consume that much... I attached mine to a rudimental ampere meter, and I got 0.4-0.5, which is 85-110 watts, while my power supply is 300watts ! I thought it consumed much more! Try it on yours smile.gif

I think firewall is much more important than anti-virus. You actually need to click on the file to get the virus, but ANY program you are running could have a remote vulnerabilty and someone could exploit this to infect you, without you knowing... I don't need it because I'm behind a NAT, no public address sad.gif but all others should give it a try.
