Are Speakers Related To Recording Quality? Options

My computer speakers have gotten really bad but will not be replaced anytime soon (due to job situation). It's actually the sub that has gone bad. Does this have any effect on the recording quality as I am using the line in? The problem is that I am getting some distortion when I am not using it. I do not have the volume all the way up on anything either so now I'm grasping at straws. I don't think it is related to my guitar or my effects unit as I have the sound I want when played through my amp. Thanks for any advice you have.
