How To Squeal A Ph Like This, Trond Vold's Pinch Harmonic Lesson Options

Hi Gmciers, I'm back from the wastelands of non-practicing guitar


I was browsing Gmc's lessons as I'm used to do and I decided to get back to my "first loves" like I'd call. Which are pinched harmonics, and I dropped on this lesson :

Then my question is what are the effects' settings to make them squeal that much, mines don't hold that long they just squeal less that a second and it's over.



PS : I would like to apologize to the instructors who "offered" me their advices and spent time explaining things to me that I never ended them because of discouragement and recording difficulties.

When I first learned PH, lots and lots of gain helped me. And then some more gain.
And you need to find the right spot on the string with your right hand. Just try different spots and you'll get there!

This is how learnt to do killer Pinch Harmonics (it's a step by step technique):

1) First get down a good picking technique and rotation of the pick

a) Use a thick pick and choke up on the very tip
Never angle the pick up or down, but rotate forwards so the picking thumb is pointing downwards, using less surface area of the pick and a better attack angle
c) Learn to just graze the top of the strings rather than digging into them



2) Now you got the picking down, it's just a matter of a slight rotation of the thumb to also graze the strings

a) Use the bridge pickup, this will allow more range
Use lots of gain on your tone
c) Turn up for volume for starters
d) Along side the pick attack angle, rotate the wrist move into the string, the edge of the thumb simply grazes the string then moves away
e) As soon as it rings, stop, else you might choke it, this is more just a flick of the wrist



3) The position of where you pick matters, there's two sweet spots

a) By using the bridge pickup, you can play harmonics back as far as the bridge pup, before that it's dead
You can actually pitch harmonic anywhere all the way down the fretboard
c) The harmonic spots depends on your guitar tuning (ensure your guitar is harmonical tuned)
d) The two sweet spots range on different guitars, but normally just in front of the bridge pickup and the other is just behind the neck pickup (move your pick back and forwards to find your guitar's sweet spots)
e) One sweet spot will scream and the other will deeply growl more - find them both. They change locations slightly per string too, so repeat for all strings

4) Add some sustain

a) With the fretboard hand, add vibrato onto the note while playing harmonics to keep it ringing out true
Practice throwing them into your fav songs and lettings them squeel!

this is a trick that helped me learn when i was beginning

to first learn the mechanics of a pinch harmonic, try playing a note on the g string and with a finger on your picking hand gently touch the string to cause an interference and you will hear the pinch harmonic noise

you'll find out that by interrupting the strings vibration you can cause a harmonic

then you should try and pick the note and interfere the string right away with your thumb after you've picked it

thats how i learnt how to make pinch harmonics i can bust them out whenever

i found that doing this without an amp first really helps you find out if you're getting it or not

treble and a high gain setting really bring out my pinches as well as using the bridge pickup

SETTINGS:

adding a very little chorus and reverb can make them sound pretty gnarly too

the chorus and reverb or even delay can add to the sustain of your guitar if you have a bad setup or your guitar isn't a neck thru or stuff like that
