A Recording Submssion Question, What affects the grade? |

I was inspired by the amazing progress that maharzan demonstrated in his detailed account here:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...ic=34999&hl= Maharzan, if you read this post, yet another big kudo! I have A question for the instructors who judge these submissions. Is replication of technique part of the grading? I ask because I want to work on a video to challenge myself to improve, but some things I do the way I do them because they come more natural for me - for instance, I've spent alot of time working on my inside/outside picking (alternate picking between strings), to the point that in some cases, it comes more natural for me to pick as opposed to hybrid pick - for instance in the lesson video from the above thread, the descending pentatonic in demo #3, would be easier for me to use a pick than use hybrid picking. It sounds cleaneer and more pronounced because my fingernails weren't built for picking, so I would basically be picking with my fingertips, not fingernails... Specifically: would not using hybrid picking in such a case, affect the grade? oh, and would you dock Marty Friedman style points for holding his hand upside down? I would -  . Myself, I wouldn't judge that,
I would go for the feel and sound of the piece, I really don't care what technique you use, is that you on the pic? because it really looks like John Petrucci from Dream Theater, I just had to make the question. -------------------- Visit my:

That's a first  I used to get "you look like Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates - Psycho)" growing up, but never a rock star. Depends on who judges you but , most will go for the overall feel, timing, rhythm, cleanliness, sound and confidence ... as Daniel said ..
And you're not tryin to have giggles on our account .. are you ?? Common John !! Reveal your identity already !!

It depends on the case, because maybe, what makes the lesson you're playing sounds not good enough to get a good mark, is the technique you're using or the bad applying of it.

You should go ahead and do the lesson for REC. Overall if the lesson is all about strict alternate picking and you use economy instead it won't be graded highest - but that in turn depends if you are able to play it with proper tone, feel, timing and comfort level, then you may just pass the lesson anyway if you make a good take.
