GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ What Mode Are You In?
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Jan 19 2011, 02:15 PM
We all use different modes when we are in different moods. First check out Cosmin's new lesson, "http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Mixolydian-Phrasing-4-Variations/", and then post a reply to today's topic.
What mode do you prefer to use most often? Does your mood affect you mode?

Good question ! I mostly seem to be in the Minor, oops, I mean Aeolian mode !!
Maybe that says something about me ???????
I must admit how satisfying it is to reel off some licks in Ionian, Lydian or Mixolydian though.. the happy sounding licks are infectious. I'd actually say that playing those modes affects my mood in a positive way, rather than the other way around !
Are you storing our answers for a personality assessment ??
Hey man!
I am a happy chap usually
so, major modes are my friends
I can't say that I don't enjoy some Dorian stuff though
but anyway, as they say - sad songs are the best
aren't they?

I use the Pentatonic pattern a lot. It's probably because I don't know many scales yet.
I usually walk up the Minor Penta scale from the D string to the G string, bend up and release, etc. That's my favorite lick. But for some reason when I try to write a minor solo, I make it sound sad. I guess because sadness is a vulnerable state of mind for me, so it feels more personal playing in this manner.
And when I'm riffing, it's always some mean sounding thing!
So, I'm kind of diverse, but also limited. I need to learn more scales.
I'm currently trying. I've been working at it. I'm motivated by your messages of trying hard.
And thanks, Kris, for starting these topics; Gets the forum buzzing.

Natural minor / harmonic minor and phrygian dominant is the scales i use the most i guess.
I also love to throw in the blues note now and then , it has such an charming effect
But yeah , love both shredding and melodies within the natural minor and harmonic minor scales

I prefer using mixes of notes/scales, but in diatonic modes, I use dorian frequently, although I like the sound of all modes, they are interesting

Lydian is quite "hopeful", if that makes any sense

Yes, that's a real interesting way of putting it
I think it's maybe because the intervals seem to soar further than Ionian or Mixolydian.. they seem to have a quality of almost 'reaching out' further into the... I dunno... positive stuff like blue skies, chirping birds & bunny rabbits etc !
