Hello, im struggling with a lick/exercise that i have been practicing on. I see two variations of this lick but i dont know which to choose. Here is the lick (in the legato way)

E --------------------------------------
B ------8p6---------------------------
G --------------8p7p5h7------------
D ---------------------------------------
A ---------------------------------------
E ---------------------------------------

I could practice the lick with legato, or i could practice it with economy picking like this:

(Down pick)(upstroke)(Down pick)
E --------------------------------------------
B--8p6-----------------------------------
G --------------8p7----------5h7----------------
D ---------------------------------------------
A ---------------------------------------------
E ---------------------------------------------

The idea is to play this exercise over and over in a fast pace - a shred lick. What way would you prefer, why? What are the difference between the lick, tonalilty wise aswell as technical

Thanks in advance smile.gif

This sounds like C minor to me.

Both ways sound good. Depends how you want to put it in the context. Learn both ways and when using it over a backing then chose which one sounds better.

Well, this 2nd option isn't actually economy picking,
or at least not what it was designed for!
Real purpose of economy picking is to have ALL notes played with pick
while you use one picking motion when crossing 2 different strings.
And what you have here is a legato lick,
you don't pick the last note on B string, you use pull-off.
So imo it doesn't matter a lot which way do you pick,
at least not when crossing strings since you don't pick every note.
But you changed things on G string tho,
now you have 2 pick strokes and not only one, as in version 1.
So this is up to you and your taste,
you can keep it all legato like in version 1
or you can pick twice on G string.
And it all depends on tempo ofc.

He can economy pick 1st and 3rd note but in that case the picking needs to start with upstroke which I don't really find logical

This could work great if you don't pick twice on the G string. Thats my opinion smile.gif If you have to pick twice on G string I would maybe start with up stroke on B string do another up on G (sweep) and then down stroke on G followed by down stroke on B (sweep). So economy could work there somewhat better!
Sounds like C minor or G aeolian more or less depending on the harmony behind it.
