Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

Practice!
Todd

Great. This is actually harder than I thought. I am not used to picking 4 times on same note. smile.gif And to take the challenge further up, I am using my ring/pinky fingers which are said to be weaker part of hand synchronization. I will post a video after I get confident on this. Thanks Todd. smile.gif

Like any Battle Plan it looks simple enough on paper! Then the Quad picking starts and your hand starts to rebel! smile.gif You can nail it! Looking forward to your vid!

Well played! Congratulations on taking on MISSION 1! Here is where you did your DRILL BOSS proud!

MEDAL OF HONOR
1.)Consistent strikes, Nice!
2.)Consistent Tempo, also Nice (Doing AWESOME til that last little bit) !
3.)Wide range of fret choice!
4.)Impressive speed right up until that last bit but before that it was FREAKING AWESOME! NIIIIICE!!!

Here is where half your squad got killed.

PURPLE HEART
1.)High End Speed - You really played this perfect and I was prepping your MISSION BADGE until that last little bit where it had just a few issues. Once you reach in to the "Shred Range" in your last section of the sound cloud file, make sure you are ..

a.)Sitting in proper classical position with left foot elevated to increase angle of the neck and playability.
b.)Using a sharp pick if at all possible.
c.)Choked up on the pick so far that only the tip is sticking out of your fingers.
d.)Palm muting the crap out of the strings so that only the strike and response is audible and you get almost zero sustain which can interfere at high speed.

2.)Drift: Again only at the RACER X speed, but you can DO THIS! Instead of jumping in to the highest speed, work up 5BPM at a time, bumping it every 10 minutes or so for an hour or so til you work up to clean RIPPING SPEED!

In short, WELL DONE BUT YOUR NOT DONE YET! Take another pass at this one at the high rate of speed to show you can play this thing at pretty much any speed.

Well done on your first Mission!

Todd

FIGHT! I mean, PRACTICE!
Todd

Thanks Todd. I am doing this every day. Will post another take soon.

Just one question I had in mind. Do we actually move just the fingers or the whole wrist ? The whole wrist feels natural but it hurts. Moving fingers seems easy but at high speed its uneasy (no control?). I see I am actually doing little bit of both and while I am consciously "relaxing" my right hand, it seems it going stiff which in turn brings in pain. This used to happen when I broke my 120bpm wall few years back. What do you suggest? You seem to play very relaxed. smile.gif

Great question soldier! The very point of this workout is to help you get to the point where you can break through the speed barrier and still stay loose. Put all of the "Tricks of the Trade" in place.

1.)Use a sharp or sharpened pick that is at least 1.0 MM thick. (Pick Flex Kills Precision, Speed is a byproduct of precision.)

2.)Dont sit "Side Saddle" when pushing the limits of your fingers. Maintain the discipline of good posture and classical guitar position with your thumb in the middle of the neck, left foot elevated on a book, good steep guitar angle, etc. The stuff we always talk about.

3.)Focus on relaxing your right hand at speed by taking your left hand off the guitar neck. Focus only on picking for a bit. Turn the metronome up 5 BPM at a time and force you hand to stay relaxed as you progress. Once you "Train" your right hand, you can then bring the left hand back in to it.

4.)Don't make big jumps in speed, E.G. from 120 to 160. Rome was not built in a Day.

These are the "Secrets" of breaking through that Barrier between thumb/wrist picking where things get sketchy. To give you some reference, take a peek at this vid. Look at the right hand. Notice how it barely moves and never gets very tense. I'm using a bit of wrist and bits of finger movement on the right hand.

Soldier you are on a MISSION! smile.gif Actually several MISSIONS. As you complete one mission/lesson, start on the next! So Do one Lesson/Mission at at time, making a video example for each workout in a given lesson. If there are four examples, then you have to master all four and make videos so it gets CRAZY hard later on. For now, there are mostly one example per lesson. So start on your next!

All of the lessons/Missions are listed at the bottom of this page in the wiki! Get Moving Solider!
