Hey lads,

Friend of mine has a Ibanez GSA 60 and a cheap Ibanez Amp. No effect etc. He wants to get an amp with a nice warm sound (like metalica). He's not familiar with effects, but he could use some tongue.gif I'm not sure about modeling, but I gues, he's still a beginner, a bit of modeling wouldn't be to bad....

His price range is 300-450.

Little list:
- Watt: 50 or less
- Mainly used for home practice, maybe some giggin' in the future
- Effects (like Reverb, chorus, delay)
- Valves (could be hybrid)
- Rock and metal sounding

Look no further for other modeling amps:
http://www.thomann.de/gb/peavey_vypyr_75.htm

12'' speaker, great for rock/metal, loud enough for rehearsals, effects are top notch

line 6 spider 3 15-30 watt ($100-$200) or the 50 or 100 watt($300) good but not too much modeling capabilities on 15 watt. It would be good for your friend cuz I have and I can make could metallica sounds

Metallica = Nice, Warm blink.gif did I miss something? Anyway I think the Vox VT30 matches the description quite well. It's a decent modeling amp, it has got the important effects, and it has got a tube in there. Imho it sounds better than the line 6 spiders but it's also a bit more expensive.

laugh.gif That was my first thought, too.

The Vox sounds great. I got one for my friend a while back. It is not a professional amp by any means, but fantastic for a beginner.

+1 for the Vox smile.gif
It's a great amp!

Haven't tried the Line6 Vypyr though, but I've always liked the sound of a Vox better than a Line6..

Haha, it's Line6 spider III and the Peavey Vypyr Paal! I gues buying a Line6 Vypyr would be... unique?

Thanks for your +1 on the vox, my vote goes there aswell.

Not sure how much they are US$$, but even look at a one of those Peavey JSX Satriani amps. I know they don't have modelling or effects (but tremolo), but those are cheap enough to acquire later. They have a power soak knob in the back that acts like a hotplate for the tube. The mini is 5W, and from what I've seen on youtube sounds AMAZING.

Maybe this isn't what he's looking for, but sometimes buying gear is like that biggrin.gif I've walked into a store with amps in mind, and came out with guitars haha.

My vote for Vypyr 60 if he can afford it, if not, then some cheaper of the same series.

Isn't sixty a lot for home practice? Maybe he should get an Aturator (how's it called?)

It's a vypyr 75watt, there is no 60 watt vypyr - and it's a solid state amp so you don't need an attentuator because they sound the same at all volumes not like a tube amp that sounds best at high volumes!

Although the original Vypers were transistor Peavey launched tube versions recently cool.gif . Think they only hit the street in early Feb in the US and I'm not sure if they've been launched in Europe. From Peavey details of the tube Vyper 60 are here smile.gif .

As Zakk says though an attenuator would be needed for home use of a tube 60W amp smile.gif .

Big Metallica fan myself, to get the basic sound:

Select the bridge pickup (perferably humbucker) on your guitar

Turn volume knobs and gain all the way up to allow total saturation.

Then for the EQ tone knobs on the amp or effect, boost the highs and lows to almost the max and cut the mid - around Bass: 8.7 / Mid 2.9 / Treble 9.9. Doing this keeps the sound from being muddy, more distortion and clean cut notes.

The Mesa Boogie Amp will give a good rich Metallica sound but may cost a bit, so best to use effects? I use Laney Amp and POD effect with a Metallica preset.

There is all tube version of Vypyr as well, 60W and 120W. Check it out before posting. But I do agree that poweramp solid state attenuation is just a marketing trick (they call it "PowerSponge" ).

He's now prety stoked about the new Vox VT30 or VT50. I have the Vox AD 50 VT, that's a good one. Again, isn't 60 watt for the peavey a lot for home practice? Or does it have a way of attenuation? The Vox has a real power control.

If you talk about the 60 watt Peavey Tube modeling Vypyr (sry forgot that one Ivan^^) then 60 watt is propably too loud for home use. It has no attentuation - if your friend takes one of the solid state vypyrs then it doesn't matter how much watts it has as solid state amps ound the same at all volumes...
