Really basic note control question

Most of the exercise type practice things don't seem to have much to do with shorter notes...scales kinda take care of themselves and with learning chords I'm more looking at getting the left hand correct than anything else. Take the beginning of Back in Black by ACDC for example. How are you cutting the chords off in time for the rest beats? I'm trying to figure out if it's some kind of right-hand palm muting thing or if you're lifting off the chord with the left hand or some combination. Muting it down with my right palm seems the most natural to my mind but right now I'm not catching it fast enough. Damp with your right hand palm and at the same time lift the fingers holding the chord to just softly damp the strings over at that end too. So you're damping at both ends.
