Does this ever happen to anyone? . . . . .

I'll be falling asleep and hear melodies in my head. Oh, that's beautiful. I could use this. I wake up and forget most of it. I'm not even completely asleep, and I forget it! How do I train myself otherwise? I never have such good ideas when I'm fully conscious.

Actually, your mind is just less critical to what it hears when you're not full conscious. It's the same with drugs.

Perhaps you could keep a notation block with you, and write down the melodies you hear. Or record your humming into a cellphone.

edit:
Being relaxed and letting your brain flow does of course help you be creative. It's good to try to set yourself into a certain state of mind, where you allow your brain to be creative, when you write. smile.gif

That's amazing! It doesn't happen to me when I'm asleep but it use to happen when I'm trying to sleep on my bed... so what I do is get up and record the idea before I forget it! I don't think that there is a way to train yourself to remember the melodies but you should try to try to wake and record the idea.

Yesterday I tried to create fast lick and I didn't get it right. I put the guitar down. In the evening I got some headache but I still decided to try that lick. Snap. I got it.

What I tried to say here that even when you're super motivated and relaxed you can't always success in writing/composing. When it clicks it cliks. wink.gif
Usually I watch guitar related Youtube videos when I want get to the "good guitar playing mood".

This happened to me a lot of times. Just there in the "twilight zone" between being awake and asleep the best ideas may appear.
Unfortunately - a lot of melodies or cool choruses got forgotten when I woke up, but I managed to write down some of the lyrics smile.gif

Ideally you would have a digital recorded device/cell phone near you so you can "sing" the melodies in order not to forget them.

Many musicians had these experiences, maybe the most famous is with the song "Yesterday" which Paul McCartney claims he wrote in the sleep (he woke up with the melody).

Yeah, even Joe Satriani wrote "Dream Song," for his new album, in his sleep. I can see why I am more creative at night. I'm more relaxed. Thanks for the replies.

I get the same thing going quite often smile.gif it used to happen during college and so, I ran in the back of the laboratory or something and I hummed in my recording device biggrin.gif I scared the professors usually, but I kept some good ideas which eventually turned into songs during time biggrin.gif

I've only really had songs happen in my dreams and then I can't remember them when I wake up... but I don't really have songs come to me during consciousness smile.gif
