Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video of you playing the bit along with a METRONOME or DRUM click in the background so that I can hear if your on beat or not, and embed it as a post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

After that proceed to MISSION #2. Here is a link to all of the missions. All 400+ of them.

Here is the link to your own PRIVATE HOUSE OF PAIN!...Er I mean.. SHRED!

Welcome to Bootcamp!!! You are off to a good start. I've been watching your video and I think we can make some great progress!! These first few missions are mostly about getting you comfortable with recording yourself and with the entire process. I made some suggestions about your palm muting in this video and hopefully it will help you for Mission 2.

To wit!

Congratulations Solder! You just...

LEVELED UP!!!!!

The first of many I'm sure!!

You are gaining momentum Soldier! Keep it up!! I notice you made a big improvement in your palm mute technique. It's looking much better than in the first video!!

As for MISSION 2 you gave it a great try! However, you are not playing with the metronome, your sort of playing around it. In this video response I focus on trying to show you how to play with a metronome. Its just about making a pick strike each time there is a click from the metronome.

You are doing great work here Soldier. Give me one more take on this one and focus on playing in synch with the metronome. Also, take another look at the tablature. To wit!!

Onward!!

Ok Captain! In this version i was trying to be in sync.Every click one pick strike. This is it. The special "Metronome" version biggrin.gif
Normally i would play the TAB version. Four notes per click.Don't know why but i am still pretty nervous in front of the cam.
Hope you like it, drill instructor!

Well fought Soldier!!! This is what I wanted to see. Your palm muting is much improved since your first video and this is crucial. This one change will help in ways you can't begin to imagine as you continue your path. On to picking!!

Yes!! You are striking on the click. Being able to do this is "Playing on the beat" and it's critical in order to be able to count and play in "time". I do make a suggestion in the video that you add more clicks so that you don't have gaps inbetween each click as that can make it harder to feel the timing. if you add a few more clicks, you can strike once per 4 clicks, or once every two and still have extra clicks in there to help keep track of the timing.

To wit!!

Congratulations Soldier!!

Back in the fight! Sorry for the late reply. Power and wifi are very spotty. I can login on my phone at least. We fared better than most in the storm. Severe flooding in big parts of my state. So far we are safe smile.gif

Your vid is a good step forward but still has the same problem as last time. I think you are pushing the speed a bit to far at this point. First we have to work on precision. Slow down your playing and make a pick strike on each click. You are now picking in between the clicks. The point of this lesson is to get you to be able to play with a metronome and synchronize your your pick strikes to the clicks. This is a foundational skill. Every other mission builds on this single skill.

Slow down a bit and listen for each click. I think your focusing on the playing and then not hearing the metronome. This is normal. Its very very hard to focus on playing and on listening for the click. However, I think you can do it. Slow way way way way way down. Speed is not the point at this level. It comes after precision. Speed is just a byproduct of precision.

Give me one more of these as slow as you can play it and only strike the string exactly on a click from the metronome. I know this is difficult and tedious. But it's a critical skill in order to be a great player.

Hopefully my wifi will be better and I can do a video for you next time.

Onward!!!

Sarge

Ok here's my new version slow at 50bpm.Don't look at my picking hand this time it looks like in my very first video.I was in a hurry biggrin.gif
Next time i will be in the correct position i promise.Btw...i use a plugin named archetype gojira which is very cool.

To avoid confusion, speed is not important at the moment.I will play every lesson slow und precise, right?!

Let's start...

YES!!!!!!! That is exactly what I am looking for!!!!

Well done!!!!!! The most important thing at this point is to be able to learn how to play properly with a metronome and you have met that goal. AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Now that you have got this part down, now you can start to bump the metronome up just slightly.

I'd say go up 1 BPM and try this then go up another 1 or 2 BPM and try again. Find the spot where you can still play with this level of precision. That is your current "speed limit".

The goal of Bootcamp is to teach this level of precision which then leads to the realm of SHREDDING. Once you can play with a metronome, just like this, you are ready to start marching up the speed of the metronome. Super congrats. This is one of the most tricky things to learn and you have done well.

I know you are probably tired of this drill but it's a crucial step to prepare you for what comes next. Now that you have the ability to play precisely, with the metronome and not lose right/left hand synchronization, start to bump up the speed very slowly, 1 or 2 BPM at a time, and find your upper limit. That will serve as your new BULLS EYE as we proceed.

Well done on using your pinky on this. Some folks try to use the first 3 fingers and this is not a great idea when playing the lower frets. Your form is good here. Push the metronome a bit over the next few days and give me one more vid where you are at your new limit on speed and tell me what BPM you used and that will be our new Goal to break as we move forward.

The road is long and full of terrors but this is the path one must walk to break through. There is always a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path.

Once more into the breach!!

Sarge
