Seems like many folks are leaving their vendor agreements and just going to the factory where the Ibanez were being built in indonesia/korea or what not, and just branding their own guitars. Tosin Abasi did it and then Zakk left Gibson to build his own, Eddie left Music man long ago to build his own, etc.
Cool link btw!! That is an amazing collection. I"m wondering if we will see Vai Guitars as a custom lable?

That is a helluva collection. Surprised at the amount of hollow bodied guitars he has. I never would have guessed.

Those who leave can afford it. EVH started his own series of guitars and amps and I think Peavey had to rename 5150 to because of copyrights. I'm not sure about Zakk but I know Gibson has been going through tough times recently and they had to change their policy a bit, so maybe the new one isn't encouraging.

That's what I first thought. If this is the case, he sure didn't sell his old guitars when buying new ones

Vai probably has a very exclusive deal with ibanez on profits etc. so he may not considered it, same with EVH as its more of a partnership with Fender.
Tosin, Chappers, Old owns their business'es by renting factorys (Tosin is with a luthier) so their quantity of production isn't near big companies.
