Pull me under is their first and biggest hit, so the album Images and Words is a good starting point (at least I started with it). I also recommend their album Metroplis pt. 2 Scenes from a memory, a concept album with beautiful ballads, hard riffs and mindblowing guitar solos. IMHO their best album and full of DT trademarks.

Listen to everything wink.gif

In seriousness though, each album is different and provides a different angle and feel of Dream Theater.

Grabbing 1 or 2 songs off of every album I would recommend: Pull Me Under, Erotomania, Voices/The Silent Man/The Mirror, The Count Of Tuscany, A Rite of Passage, Hollow Years, Lines in The Sand, Panic Attack, The Glass Prison, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence I-VIII (yes, all 42 minutes!), Forsaken, In the Presence of Enemies I-IV, As I Am, and finally the entire Metropolis Part II album because it's a concept album.

That's a good 5 or 6 hours of Dream Theater, I think!

Dream Theater themselves recommend Octavarium to new fans. It is the album they are most proud of and most representative of their style. These are their words not mine. I am a big fan though and long time listener.

If you like prog rock, Images and Words and Falling into Infinity. If you like more metal, then Awake and Scenes from a Memory. If you like even more metal, Train Of Thought and Black Clouds and Silver Linings
