OK guys I need some serious advice. About a month ago I started getting this weird dry skin problem on my left pinky and ring finger. It's kind of hard to explain but it covers the ends of both fingers and will crack and bleed when I play for more than an hour. After that happens its so painful I have to stop playing for a couple days. mad.gif (sorry for the gross details but I'm just telling it how it is) I've tried playing with band-aids and plastic tape on my fingers (makes me feel like tony Ioni lol) to prevent further injuries but they end up coming off and I keep playing and end up further injuring my fingers.

This is NOT the usual skin tearing from normal playing. I have had that plenty of times in my playing and have built up callouses already but this is NOT from normal wear and tear. This is from a skin condition I used to get every once in a while.

Should I stop playing for a while to let it heal? I would hate to get out of practice, plus every time I try to quit playing I end up getting bored and playing anyway.

Sounds to me like an allergy type thing. Have you been to a physician?
I have seen this before where I work. What do you do for a living? Sorry I do not know you so you could be just a wee lad for all I know.

Had a guitar hanging, just about waist high, and we are going to play these things until the day we die.

I have to agree that it is probably an allergy thing. My buddy can't play my guitar because I use Elixir strings and he's allergic to the Nanoweb coating they put on. I would definitely recommend trying a different kind of string.

Well I'm 20 and I worked at a pizza restaurant where I had lots of flour on my hands constantly, but my last day was a few days ago so maybe if that was a factor it will get better. Also I've been playing for about a year and I've always used d'addario strings so I don't think that's what caused it. I have been to a physician and he prescribed me a cream which seems to help but I really think my playing is preventing it from healing since every time I play it tears my fingers up worse.

I would definately let them heal so they don't reopen. I know it will be a huge temptation to pick up the guitar, but its better than getting a serious infection.

Sounds to me like the cream your doctor prescribed for you was helping. You need time to heal.

total agree with Daniel here, if you carry on playing before they get a chance to heal they are never going to get better, kind of a catch 22 for you sad.gif coz when you do start playing again your skin will no doubt of softened some, but once they`ve healed just do little practice stints, not too long, ease yourself back into it slowly and build up the harderskin on your fingers.

I completely agree with everybody else, and give you the advice to put down a guitar for a while, and go to see a doctor-specialist for skin. Don't push it, it will do you no good man. Besides, you won't go backwards with playing, a pause of 2 weeks can turn out to be quite good, you will leave time for your playing to really settle down, and will return in shape in a matter of one week of focused practice. Health is THE MOST important thing.

You need to stop playing and let fingers heal ! Also you could go to a dermatologist to see what skin condition exactly is it and help you heal it once and for all..Also use that cream that was prescribed to you before...Not playing for some time and getting rid of the problem once and for all will be a big thing for you and than you could practice like crazy wink.gif

Let it heal up smile.gif And I can highly recommend pantothenol cream too. Dexpanthenol turns into B5 vitamin that really boosts the healing process of the skin while moisturizing.

Mate stop playing... and take your problem seriously.

I think you should go to a dematologist, be sure he understands that you play the guitar and that's like a work related illness, and should be taken into great consideration.

Let the injure heal. If you feel the necessity to practice, work a bit on theory, ear training... listen to some good music, some study time... but do not grab the guitar until you are healed.

Remember that it's better to stop for a month than let an injure to become cronical and be capped to play the guitar.

Just my 2 cents.

Best wishes to you and your fingers mate.
