GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ How Are You Tuned

Posted by: skennington Jan 20 2008, 06:51 PM

So I've been experimenting with different tunings and wanted to see what you guys like.

I'm currently playing in a D tunning ( D-G-C-F-A-D ) and digging the sound. The PH's are off the hook!
Let me know what you like so I can try it! biggrin.gif

Usually standard, but right now I'm tuned down a half step for Sweet Child O' Mine. All of my guitars have floating bridges so I don't detune all that often. smile.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Jan 20 2008, 07:00 PM

I have 3 guitars in 3 tunings right now

E Standard (E A D G B E)
C Standard (C F B# Eb G C)
Open Dm (D A D F A D)

Open Dm is real run to shred and riff in

Posted by: JVM Jan 20 2008, 07:40 PM

I've been meaning to try some open tunings lately, so I guess I'll experiment with that a bit starting with open Dm, thanks UC tongue.gif

Currently:
Les Paul - E standard flat
Flying V - Drop D
Bass - Drop C

Posted by: SEANCD2005 Jan 20 2008, 07:44 PM

I like to play alot of metallica so i keep one guitar tuned a whole step down and the other i keep in standard

Posted by: chast Jan 20 2008, 07:44 PM

Mostly I am at E standard but sometime also Eb standard smile.gif

Posted by: Smells Jan 20 2008, 07:56 PM

mainly standard tuning, sometimes just drop the Low E to D on certain songs.

Posted by: Martin la guitarra Jan 20 2008, 08:14 PM

Atm i play a lot of Slipknot songs, that´s why i use drop b tuning which I really adore.

Posted by: Robin Jan 20 2008, 08:25 PM

Open D on acoustic(sometimes open C, depends on string thickness)
Standard D on electric.

Posted by: Fsgdjv Jan 20 2008, 08:47 PM

E standard mostly, on both electric and acoustic.

Posted by: Mackietao Jan 20 2008, 09:11 PM

E standard... Eb standard.. Both with droped tuning on low string.
One time I tuned a guitar in C, standard.

Posted by: at lights end Jan 20 2008, 09:36 PM

only have one guitar atm. it's usually in standard tuning, sometimes drop d.
when i get another one ill keep one in drop c. biggrin.gif

Posted by: SLASH91 Jan 20 2008, 11:47 PM

Really just standard...I'll tune down to drop D or whatever if I have to (I have a Floyd Rose). I'm thinking about selling my strat and buying either an Ibanez V or Dave Mustaine Dean, so I will use it for alternate tunings smile.gif

Posted by: preownedguitar Jan 20 2008, 11:49 PM

Standard E or Eb and one that is only Standard D (DGCFAD)

Posted by: Smikey2006 Jan 21 2008, 12:02 AM

Schecter C1= Standard
Jackon + bass string = 2 steps down
Damien 7 = something.. drop D plus a B on the low 7
Broken warlock in dropped C

Posted by: Hisham Jan 21 2008, 12:08 AM

standard tune

Posted by: Jakub Luptovec Jan 21 2008, 12:11 AM

D#.. partly DROP C# - my favourite tuning:)

Posted by: skennington Jan 21 2008, 12:12 AM

Standard tuning for me smile.gif

Posted by: Lorry Jan 21 2008, 04:26 AM

Currently I play in drop D. I would like to get drop C but my guitar has a Floyd Rose bridge, need another guitar smile.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Jan 21 2008, 05:11 AM

Here are some more i like to use.

Open Cmin7: low-high - C-G-C-G-Bb-Eb
Open Cmaj7: low-high - C-G-C-G-B-E

(Theory experts make sure i have the notes right)

I like to use these for prog metal type stuff, fair amount of thick distortion, a little delay, and some reverb smile.gif

Standard or Drop D

Posted by: botoxfox Jan 21 2008, 04:11 PM

Standard. Boring, I know.

Posted by: Mr T Jan 21 2008, 04:49 PM

One in C# standard / Drop B and one in E standard / drop D.

Posted by: Batista Jan 21 2008, 04:50 PM

My Les Paul is tuned a half step down, since the vocalist in my band has pretty dark voice, so it suits him better, and my metal guitar (Schecter Damien-6) is tuned in Drop D to get darker sound too.

Posted by: 311junkie Jan 21 2008, 05:01 PM

I just use Dropped D or Standard. I haven't explored the other awesome tunings out there cause I've been to lazy to adjust the floating bridge on my Ibanez smile.gif

I know, i love the low heavy riffage smile.gif

Posted by: Paul Coutts Jan 22 2008, 08:21 AM

I've current got a guitar in C (In Flames), one in D (not drop d) for Strung Out, and 2 in E for everything else smile.gif
Gotta say tho, I used to hate C, but it's quite good biggrin.gif

Posted by: Paul Coutts Jan 22 2008, 08:22 AM

I think I might put one in half a step down for some GnR solos....I need to learn some some day smile.gif

Posted by: blindwillie Jan 22 2008, 09:07 AM

I usually play my guitar open minded tongue.gif
Stay tuned...

Posted by: Sabbz Jan 22 2008, 05:46 PM

I tend to usually tune a half step down, coz I generally like the sound and feel (playing wise).

Posted by: muntahunta Jan 22 2008, 05:48 PM

i play in nothing but Em and dropped D, allthough i tried DADADD yesterday

Posted by: stratman33 Jan 22 2008, 05:52 PM

Standard or Drop D.

Posted by: skennington Jan 22 2008, 05:56 PM

Thanks again for all the input guys, I've been taking notes! biggrin.gif

Posted by: kyldeee Jan 22 2008, 05:59 PM

I use standard tuning, never really tried anything else blink.gif I think I should smile.gif

Posted by: Nick334 Jan 22 2008, 08:23 PM

Standard on my Ibanez - don't like changing on that. Sometimes go Drop D on my acoustic for some country metal happy.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Jan 22 2008, 08:47 PM

Standard tuning for me.Sometimes I go to dropped-D briefly.. wink.gif

Posted by: coffeeman Jan 22 2008, 08:52 PM

Most of the time standard , unless I will practice a Lavendell lesson or something like that. My guitar does not have a floyd rose but if it had one I would preffer to have another guitar than to change the tunning, how do u guys do it with floyd rose, i believe its very annoing , right ?

What I do is quite simple actually. When I tune my low e, I tune to E with the fine tuner all the way down. when I want to drop to D, I simply crank the fine tuner back up. smile.gif

Posted by: Atlantik Jan 22 2008, 10:24 PM

Well,

Standard E, and sometimes Eb ( there's just something about that tuning!)

D (DGCFAD)

and C (C F Bb Eb G C), a personal favorite of mine. smile.gif

Posted by: Gerardo Siere Jan 22 2008, 10:40 PM

standart, have floating tremolo systme on guitar so it´s not easy to move form one tunning to another, remember to set up again your guitar if you change tuning (it changes the whole string tension against the neck)

Posted by: Stevie·Ray·Vaughn Jan 22 2008, 10:42 PM

E standard on the acoustic and the strat
D standard / E standard (swtich between them) on the SG
E standard on the bass

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Jan 23 2008, 12:18 AM

Standard, DGCFAD and CGCFAD smile.gif

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Jan 23 2008, 03:54 PM

Standard at all times. I rarely use alternate tunings.

Posted by: RIP Dime Jan 23 2008, 04:34 PM

I wish I had enough guitars for all the tunings I like!!
I really dig open C major(CGCGCE), C# standard, D standard, Drop C, Drop B, E standard and drop D.
Anything lower than drop B is just too low for me, maybe if I had a better guitar or amp it'd sound good, but it just isn't happening with my current gear. I've tried open Dm and kinda liked it, but didn't really get to play with it as long as I wanted to.
I just like the lower, warmer sound, and the thicker strings I get to use with them feel great in my hands. And I love the fact that I play different in every tuning. Every tuning has different songs I get to coax out of them.
