GMC Forum _ Todd Simpson _ Bascuthach's Bootcamp!

Posted by: Todd Simpson May 3 2012, 10:12 PM

Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

Here is your link your personal training ground/HELL!

Practice!

Well played! Congratulations on taking on MISSION 1! Here is where you did your DRILL BOSS proud!

MEDAL OF HONOR
1.)Consistent strikes, Nice!
2.)Consistent Tempo, also Nice!
3.)Wide range of fret choice!
4.)Impressive speed!

Here is where half your squad got killed.

PURPLE HEART
1.)String traverse: It's hard, believe me I know. Look at 0:14, and 0:21 on the video. When shifting between strings and trying to maintain consistent speed/strike, any flaws will show up in a big way. The good news is, it's fixed with some more running of the bit.
2.)Drift: Just to show how well you can stick to a given count, try to play with a metronome click or even drum click track in the background and only speed up when it speeds up so show you can LOCK in to a given time signature.

In short, WELL DONE BUT YOUR NOT DONE YET! Take another pass at this one and focus on string traverse and higher frets as those are hard sometimes, and on locking to a given tempo/click. Shoot one more Vid and SLAY THE ENEMY!

FIGHT! I mean, PRACTICE!
Todd

Soldier you are on a MISSION! smile.gif Actually several MISSIONS. As you complete one mission/lesson, start on the next! So Do one Lesson/Mission at at time, making a video example for each workout in a given lesson. If there are four examples, then you have to master all four and make videos so it gets CRAZY hard later on. For now, there are mostly one example per lesson. So start on your next!

All of the lessons/Missions are listed at the bottom of this page in the wiki! Get Moving Solider!

Sorry for the delay Soldier! To ensure smoother reaction time on the part of your Drill Instructor (me), be sure to shoot me a PM whenever you complete a mission so that I know to check your THREAD OF DEATH for new Mission!

One to the DeBrief!

SOLDIER YOU RAWK! This is well played!
-Right hand planted firm on bridge
-Good pick strikes! Nice and clean!
-Speed Kills! Nice and fast!

You even did DOUBLES and TRIPLES! The only complaint I'd have is with the triple picking being a tad off set to the metronome but that's understandable as triples are hard to match to 4/4 time. You played with consistency and that's all that really matters to me. WELLL DONE!

Congratulations Soldier! You have BEEN PROMOTED! YOUR ARE OUR FIRST 3rd MISSION MONSTER!

On to MISSION 4!

Well played Soldier! You are playing nice and brisk! As for marking your performance against our other brothers, keep in mind you are only in a PITCHED BATTLE against yourself! And I"m happy to say your fighting and winning!

One small note on tone. I can hear what your playing but it does sound kinda small in terms of tone. It's fine for our work hear as I just need to hear what your playing, not a Marshal Stack. What kind of amp are you using and what do you have available to you for your weapons of war? Also, do you have an audio interface? Or even an adapter to put your guitar cable in to your computer sound card? I'd like to be able to hear your palm muting and pick strikes a little bit better if at all possible. But these are pretty small concerns. Keep fighting!

On to the DEBRIEF! YOU JUST LEVELED UP SOLDIER!

MEDAL OF HONOR
-Good Precision
-Spiff Strikes
-Killer Speed

Congratulations Soldier! You are our first Warrior to see LEVEL 5!!!!!!!!

Im using a Mini Tone Master by Fender, It has 2 speakers, I believe to be 2 inches each, perfect for my computer desk, I am using a web cam with a built in mic, on my other computer I have a sound card but the video has lag, I have 3 other amps, 2 are in a picture of mine, the 3rd one is smaller than those but has the same style, I also have access to a camera with video recording, I dont think Im palm muting

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jul 3 2012, 03:10 AM

While the setup you are using with the micro/mini 2 inch speakers is fine if that's what works best. It's really hard to hear any bass as there isn't much to hear and thus I can't tell if your not palm muting which is something I'm trying to get everyone to do on these workouts as it helps separate notes and makes you practice muting while pick traversing strings. If possible, can you skip the mini me amp and just plug in to the computer where your web cam is and use something like Amplitude Free? That way you can create a full range recording and it will really help me get a better idea of what's being played.

Let me know if you have any questions about installing/using Amplitude 3 or what not. Onward!

Todd

Here is my take at the second part

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 21 2012, 03:42 AM

Well fought Soldier! You got the idea on the single/double picking alternation and the pattern! So guess what! YOU LEVLED UP! AGAIN!

MEDAL OF HONOR
-Good Precision
-Spiff Strikes
-Killer Speed

I like that your trying new tones as well! On the RP50, can you tweak the Cabinet emulation presets? I don't know how many cabs are in it but the cabinet is the final bit in the chain typically to trick the ears in to thinking it's a real amp! Tone, like playing is a life long journey and I'm glad to see you trying new bits. Keep it up!

SOLDIER!! This is REALLY WELL FOUGHT!!! You are going above and beyond with your spiff Double Picking here. It's really nice work! Understand when I say I have a weapons grade respect for your playing and the effort you are putting in. I feel like I"m reporting a death in the family to tell you that the second bit, around 19 seconds, is the only thing keeping you from the Vaunted Rank of LEVEL 11 (Which will be our FIRST Level 11 Mission Badge Ever), is the metronome. You are playing in a fine manner, at time index :19, it's just not tied to the metronome as much as it should be. Your timing is solid. It's just a slightly different timing than the metronome. I Know you can synch to the clicks. There may be too many clicks going on actually. If you don't need them, reduce the number of clicks by cutting the metronome speed in half. Count the time in your head and use the clicks just for reference. You should be able to hear the missing clicks in your head.

Give this one more ASSAULT soldier and be our FIRST TO BREACH 11!!!!!

Im not highest ranking, Im just first to climb this mountain, there will be many that follow, there will be those that push harder than me, and those that give up on a short coming, this is not a race, this is me simply challenging myself, Here is the next mission

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 16 2013, 12:45 AM

Well said soldier!!!! It's not a race and you really are only competing with yourself. The "Top Sniper" badge is simply recognition of being the first of the group to reach new ground. The badge is not permanent, it will shift to whomever is currently reaching the newest ground.

On to the debrief!! I've started watching these and sleeping on it, then watching again and I've found it gives me a better idea of the results and performance. After watching yours a few times now, I wanted to say that your ASCENDING bit is WONDERFUL!!!! Good technique and precision, followed by brisk speed and good control as well as fine mute control with no sympathetic string vibration. NICE!!!

However, on the DESCENDING bit.

HALF YOUR SQUAD GOT KILLED
1.)Right hand not fully planted military style on the bridge.
2.)Sympathetic string vibrations causing extra string noise

You nailed the playing entirely, well done! But Your muting on the descending bit still needs some work. I'd say re-fight this battle and focus less on the speed than on the muting and keeping string noise down. You RAWK soldier!! And are just a few shots away from your next Level.

FIGHT ON!!!!!

Nice! You are back in the game and on a Roll Soldier!!! Two for Two since you've been back!! The only small gripe I"d have is using the middle finger on the first lick instead of the one closer to the pinky, but that's really just preference, so it's not gonna slow us down!!! MEDALS OF HONOR
*MUTE: Still on point. Good to see you haven't lost anything on that front!!

Great to see you back in the fight Soldier!!! Great to see you keeping your momentum and DRILLING AND KILLING! This mission requires a CRAZY stretch and PINKY POWER! Those two things together can put any Soldier to the test!! You tore through it like a hot knife through butter. I don't even think you broke a sweat! This stuff might be too easy for you Soldier!! Let's debrief!!
MEDALS OF HONOR

*PINKY POWER: This Mission requires PINKY POWER and you have it in spades Soldier!!!
*STRETCH FROM HELL: Also requires a CRAZY long stretch. You breezed through it!
*STICKING THE LANDING: If you don't stick the landing (nail the pinky notes) on any of these licks, they sound awful. Good news is you stuck the landing every time!!!
You nailed every stretch, stuck every landing, and made short work of this one Soldier!! I"m impressed, I gotta say! None of these licks are easy, but you made it look easy!! Don't worry, harder stuff is on the way Soldier!!
In other words you just.....

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jul 3 2018, 02:26 AM

Look at him go! This one has several bits that you must get correct in order to move on. The good news here is that you are clearly way more advanced than this Mission requires. I fear this stuff may just be far too easy for your Soldier!!!! You may have to start doing multiple missions at once just to get an adequate challenge!!!
You clearly have a good handle on all the techniques I'm trying to get you to focus on in these drills. If you had any gaps in these techniques, they would stick out like a sore thumb. But nope!!! Let's debrief!..

MEDALS OF HONOR
*QUIET AS DEATH: Very nice muting using both left and right hands. I don't hear any unwanted string noise wrecking the drills. I hate unwanted string noise soldier! I"ve been known to send folks back to the wood shed just for that! None here, well done!
*SYNCH LIKE A MACHINE: Right and left hand are stuck on the same clock like glue!! That's what I wanna see. I don't wanna see a strike, then see a fret happen just after, again, that would get you sent back to the shed. Good news, none of that!!! Also well done.
*PRECISION: You attack each drill and play it at speed without any sort of timidness or sheepishness. This is what I like to see. Dive in and get those fingers moving!!!!
Soldier, you are more than ready for what lies ahead, feel free to start taking these missions on two or three at a time until you reach a point where you feel challenged. Well played and you just ...
LEVELED UP!!!

It's great to See you Back in the Fight Soldier!!!! You were leading the pack in Bootcamp for quite some time!!!! You jumped back in on a really tough bit with a serious stretch and one that makes you stick the landing with the pinky over and over again. You have the lower strings going just fine. It seems that on the B and High E you are losing traction. It could be hand synch or not a full fretting But about 7 seconds on the second video you can probably see what I'm talking about. I know you can play this lick as I've seen you play licks very similar in the past. One quick tip, your picking hand seems weighted toward the lower strings so it's losing reach on the high strings, as if your fretting hand. Place both hands as if you were going to be playing everything using only the D string. That puts both hands just about dead center and keep the thumb dead center on the back of the neck. That way you have enough balance on both sides to traverse every string.

I know you can play this Soldier!! You are just back in the fight so give it one more go and you've got this!!!!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Oct 14 2018, 04:44 AM

You can clearly shred this bit, but for the purposes of the recorded takes, there is no bonus for speed. It's all about being able to play with precision since this lick is very very very long. You are killing it until about 5 seconds in. Watch it again and you can hear the open string where you momentarily lost mute and missed a strike but if you slow down just a pinch you can nail this. Once you have badged up, add this bit to your warm up and you'll probably be playing it at 300 BPM in no time at all. It just takes a bit of repetition. Ben has a "burst" approach where he suggests playing perhaps the first 3 strings fast, then the rest slow and adding more string as fast as you go. This is yet another good way to increase your overall speed in increments. For the purpose of the Mission video, I need the entire thing done without a single mistake which is what makes bootcamp so darn hard. Slow down just a bit and focus on each note and you'll be badged up and on to the next thing. I am glad to see you digging back in!! Give me one slower take and your leveled up~

MEDALS OF HONOR
BACK IN THE FIGHT First off, it's just great to have you back at the front lines in the heat of Battle Soldier!! i can still remember when you were the TOP DAWG in Bootcamp and you were on top for quite some time!! Props for sheer aggression and on jumping back in with both feet!
PINKY POWER It's good to see you have not lost your PINKY POWER Soldier! Sometimes I see soldiers heading back to the FRONT LINES and dragging their pinky a bit like a wounded appendage. Not so here!
SEQUENCE This is all about note sequence. Once you can play this bit on the minor scale, you can play it on any scale/shape/mode you like. It works backwards and forwards and with multipicking. Now that you have it down, explore it!
In short, ONE SHOT ONE KILL you just...
LEVELED UP!!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

LIKE A BOSS: Points for shear aggression on this one Soldier! You attacked it with speed and precision. Nice.

PRECISION STRIKES Not only did you tear through the Mission, but you sniped it as well! Score!

FIGHT LIKE YOU TRAIN Solid palm mute, precise picking, not to mention the running on fire approach!

In short you just ...

Sorry to hear about the power! I had that here a bit ago and it was lame to be sure. Creative approach on the accoustic! I'd say switch back to the main weapon now that power has returned. Good job not giving in to lack of electricity!

Let's Debrief!
MEDALS OF HONOR SOLID PICKING Both hands are synched up, your strikes are very certain and strong. Nice!
SOLID PALM MUTE You have gotten a very good handle on picking while keeping your mute solid. Well done!
SOLID TIMING This Mission, like many, falls apart if your timing slips even just a bit. Not here, timing is spot on.

You are very close to your next Chevron Soldier! Keep it up!
LEVELED UP!!!!!

You are in the tall weeds now Soldier! This is where it starts getting thick. From now through Lesson 50 is where you get tested. Many falter, many fail, but the few, the proud, will not be denied their Victory. Well fought on this one. Let's Debrief!!..

MEDALS OF HONOR
PICKING FROM HELL!: Well done on PICKING on every one of these!
HANDY SYNCH: Top notch hand synch from start to finish.
MUTE IT OR SHOOT IT: Just enough to control any errant string noise.

Look at that PINKY in action!!!! It's great to see you diving in with verve and aggression and still holding on to precision!! keep this up!!

You have crossed over Soldier!! You have entered the range of Missions that scare most folks in to running away at a brisk pace. Not you!! You have chosen to walk the path of the Warrior!! Let's Debrief!!
MEDALS OF HONOR

CLEAN AS GLASS: Despite the Double Picking hurdle, each strike is measured and even and strong.

SYNCH TIGHT AS A GNATS TEETH: Right/Left hand Synch is Spot On, Per Usual!!

PALM MUTE OF DEATH: Palm Muting so solid it's got it's own gravity!

In short, you applied your usual precision to this little finger twister and made it your own! No drama, just clean and precise. Well fought Soldier!!! Also, you just made it to your next CHEVRON and ...

MISSION 40 DEBRIEF!!!!

WELCOME BACK TO THE FIGHT SOLDIER!!! I Knew you had this kind of FIRE in your Belly!!!!! IT's great to see. As one of the former TOP DAWGS, I do have high expectations for your ability!! I know you can play!!! In this one, the second drill is a pinch tricky, and I can hear a couple of small misses on the high strings as you move down. You may be pushing the speed a bit ahead of where you can actually play this lick. I appreciate the AGGRESSION!! You can add an aggressive take that's on the edge at the end of each vid. But..... There needs to be one example of you playing in full control. Hitting every note, letting no bad notes by, etc. One more pass on the second drill a pinch slower and you've GOT THIS!!!

NAILED IT!! Where ya been Soldier!!! Good to see you back in the fight!!!!!! This is what I am looking for out of this. It's a great way to run a scale! You can run any scale this way. It always works smile.gif

let's Debrief!!!
MEDALS OF HONOR
LEFT HAND SKILLS THAT KILL Firstly, all about every string. I made use of every string on purpose so that you can try to mute without moving your hand too much. You did a great job of keeping your mute stable and not moving your right hand around. It's easy to get pulled in to moving the hand instead of just rotating the wrist.
RIGHT HAND SKILLS THAT KILLL Secondly, looking for precision on the right hand. Didn't miss a beat or a note!
THAT SYNCHING FEELING Lastly I wanna see tight synch!!! If there are gaps it's easy to spot. You have really good right left synch.

This is much improved and it looks like you have lost some weight? Congrats you just..

Posted by: Todd Simpson Oct 25 2019, 06:06 PM

Great to have you back! Your working out is clearly paying off! Looking at 41 it seems that it does need a Re-Take. I typically badge up/grade one per day so that I can give feedback on each. It looks like you may have been rushing things a bit and there is not always great note separation. This one is NOT a shred lick. It's actually a blues lick so it's meant to be mid tempo at best. Slow this down a bit and focus on making each note clear and distinct. In the learning process, precision always trumps speed. Speed is just a matter of repetition. However, it the precision isn't there, one just repeats un precise playing which just leads to faster un precise playing. So precision always wins. Once more in to the breach!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

FINGER TRAVERSE: Firstly Im looking to see how you run all the strings. This drill makes you hit them all! It requires you to traverse all the strings which is a way to test if you have the ability to traverse non stop. You did it!

PALM MUTE: Secondly I need to see a solid mute. You can do it quite well!!!

PICK ONCE HAMMER MANY: Lastly I need to see your "pick once hammer many". You have zero problem with it. Try the pick once hammer many on every scale you know. It's a great technique. Well done!

MISSION 42

You are off to a great start! You didn't do a solo over the backing track though which is the most important part of 42. You did a great job on the warmup and lick, but the solo is really important. Download the backing track and create a short solo over it. This one lesson stumps more people than any other. The solo doesn't have to be fast, it doesn't even have to be good. It just has to be an attempt to play a solo roughly in key that roughly works with the backing. The attempt is the most important thing.

Go for it Soldier!!

NICE!! Well fought Soldier. The entire point of this part of the Mission is to get you to dive in and play a solo. At this point, we are 40 plus missions in so you have plenty off licks learned to add to your own. You put them to good use here! For many people, this Mission is a HUGE stumbling block. It requires you to dig deep and actually play a lead solo. This is the entire point of bootcamp. To give you the tools and training you need to be able to create music. I'm impressed with what you came up with! I can see several bits from Bootcamp and some of your own bits as well. I like the use of the harmonizer as well. Well played. This is exactly what I want to see from this bit. You just..

QUICK LICKS 43 DEBRIEF

MEDALS OF HONOR

TRICKY PICKING: First thing I'm looking at on this is the picking. There is a TON of picking on this. You nailed it Soldier. The picking on this is very very tricky indeed.

SPIFF SYNCH: Secondly I want to see your hand synch. If you lose synch, these just fall apart. The tricky picking can make your synch drift, but not here!!! Not you!!Spot on.

TRAVERSE GALORE: Lastly I want to see you traverse every string and not generate string noise. This entire mission is one No gaps!

In short, you just..

MISSION 44 DEBRIEF!!

Well Fought Soldier!! It's great to see you diving back in to the fight!! This one seemed to give you no trouble at all which is good to see. Things get a bit trickier once you pass the MISSION 50 mark. You are ready!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

PICKED CLEAN: Firstly I wanna see clean picking!!! I always need to see clean picking cause sloppy picking is sloppy playing. Solid Picking Soldier!! You are developing a very strong picking technique, which is great to see!!

SMOOTH AS SILK: Secondly I want this to feel like it's all played on one string and smooth as glass. Not rushing or lagging, smooth and in the zone!!

PICKING WHILE MUTED: Lastly it's all about the mute. Since this traverses every string it's easy to lose mute and have string noise. This is one of the hardest things both to teach and to learn. Super Congrats, you have managed it. NICE!

You got this and are ready for what's next! you just..

This is well played Soldier. You have gotten out of what I was hoping and I must blame apologize for not having better tablature set out for you. .I have recreated the tablature to match the video more directly for reference material. You don't need to do this one again, I"m just including these for edification. Let's Debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

RIGHT HAND CONTROL: For the tapping and picking bits, one needs good control of the right hand. This becomes even more critical as we move ahead.

FINGER POWER: Without finger power, the hammer on lick won't work. You've got power to spare!!!
PRECISION IN TRAVERSE: Wads of traverse here. It's good practice for what's coming. The ability to traverse strings without making huge amounts of string noise is a critical skills.

This is not a simple collection of bits and you play it well! Despite the fact that my tab didn't match up to the vid up reviewing it. You have gotten what I wanted you to get out of this Mission. you just...

LEVELED UP!!!!!

The first and last bits of your vid are really impressive. I see that one stumble in the middle that you mention but you recover very well which is really more important. So let's Debrief!!!
TRICKY PICKING: You nailed it Soldier. The picking on this is very very tricky indeed.

SPIFF SYNCH: The tricky picking can make your synch drift, good news is your synch is tight!!!!
TRAVERSE GALORE: Part of what I want you to learn here is STRING TRAVERSE. That last lick in particular you traverse like a monster!!!

You didn't even break a sweat!!!! This is NOT an easy MISSION for anyone IMHO and you KILLED it. You are ready for the KRAZY bits ahead.

Great to see you back in the fight Soldier!!!!! That set of the first two licks is very tricky. both of them make you end on the PINKY. You have the idea but you don't quite fret the last note very smoothly. I know you can reach that soldier!!! you've got a killer pinky!!! The last two licks are THUMBLESS TECHNIQUE licks as it mentions in the notes. It's an easy thing to miss. IT's also a good chance to work on your THUMBLESS!! Take the thumb OFF the neck for the last two.

Well Fought Soldier!! This one has a stretch that can humble even the hardest fighter. Congrats on getting your pinky to reach half way down the neck!!! You got the other lick as well. I often like to see the second lick in a loop but you can play it well and that's what mattes. You've got a solid palm mute with no string bleed and your pick strikes are clean. Also, hand synch is good. It checks all the boxes that I like to see in every mission. This one has the stretch challenge on top of all the rest. Well done! You are ready for what's ahead!!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 19 2021, 05:07 AM

Nice! This one takes a single shape, and moves it around, the runs it backwards and then has you do a open string tapping lick with it. The first few drills are to get your hand used to playing that pattern on the left hand. It's a bit of a stretch with the pinky and i'm glad to say your pinky is in top shape. You stick the landing each time. During the reverse patter bit you didn't get thrown off and your open string tapping was quite good. Clearly you have the skills Soldier!

After several attempts and many new issues with new gear, a few set backs, and many takes and retakes lol though here it is, the end of a long day

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 1 2021, 06:51 AM

Well Fought Soldier!!! Sorry to hear you had some gear issues! It looks like you pushed through and sorted it out! This is well played. This is some very advanced tapping. It's well beyond the standard EVH tapping stuff. This makes use of the open string which gains a free note essentially. Also, you have to to hammer on and pull off with multiple fingers and keep it all high and tight in terms of timing and muting.

The last one is an 8 note per string lick. Getting 8 notes per string on a tapping lick is a lot of notes. In addition, you have move both hands at various points, up and down the neck. So multi tap and traverse. For practice, try these licks on every string to see if you can keep them clean!!! You've got this one sorted Soldier! You just...

Lesson 50!!! cool.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 26 2021, 08:51 AM

Welcome back to the fight Soldier!! This one is all about the fret hand power. The good news is that you have got loads of fret hand power!! This one requires you to not only do non stop hammer ons, but also non stop pull offs. So if one of those is lagging, the lick falls apart. Also, you gotta traverse every single string so if your hand positioning is poor it won't go well either. You've got solid hand position here and good use of the over hand mute technique!!!! This one is sorted Soldier. You just..

The first two drills are speed builders and I've seen the speed in your fingers Soldier! The other licks are perfect as is. Those first two are symmetrical and don't require any fret shift. Push the speed on those two Soldier!! Give me on vid with you pushing the ragged edge on the first two licks and it's sorted! Keep it tight but push!

I have created a new Mute Drill just for my BOOTCAMP SOLDIERS! This one is not for a badge. This is just to help you work on your mute. It's a very simple drill. Just palm mute the bridge, and take your fret hand OFF of the guitar entirely. This will force your palm mute to do all the mute work and show you if there are gaps in your mute. So try it as in the vid, just strike each string a few times, and move on to the next string. Make sure that you don't hear any other string other than the one you are striking. That's the point of this drill. To make sure that you can isolate all of the other strings with your palm mute.

if you notice that you hear other strings ringing, even when you are not striking them, adjust your palm mute angle/position until you find that sweet spot where your palm should be resting. This is the secret sauce folks. Once you sort this out, you won't have to worry about string noise getting in your way, even on our crazy open string licks that span several or all of the strings. It's a quick and simple drill that can really help you isolate any issues with your mute. give it a whirl!!

Aggressive playing Soldier!!! You are very close on this. I have to send you back to the Front Lines for more combat training though!!!! To wit. I've made a vid trying to explain what could use some more blood sweat and tears. It's the first vid I've made for a non pass mission, but it seemed better to explain things with.

Well fought! I knew that you could play all these bits. None of this is outside of your range. I appreciate you pushing the envelope for speed! It's a good thing to do. This Mission is just a pinch more basic than that. The good news is there is some truly crazy stuff coming up smile.gif I think you'll dig it!1

I can hear what sounds like triplets on the open string? Take another look at the tablature. It's two strikes on the open string. I like the mod you are doing here smile.gif It's just not the riff that I'm trying to get you to play. Do you have a copy of guitar pro? if so you can listen to the riff in software. If not let me know. It could be getting in the way of things. I know you can play this riff. It's well within your ability. You're playing a more complicated version of it so I know you can play a more simple version.

Once more in to the breach!!

Soldier you clearly have the ability to play this riff. I don't want to get too bogged down in to the weeds here but I do want to take a moment to say pretty please never and I do mean never, use Delay, Reverb, Chorus, Flanger, etc. or indeed any effects of any kind but for gain/distortion. I just wan to hear the notes Soldier!!!! To wit!

Nice!! Much improved on tone. Thanks for killing the FX! This one is packed with multi picking and then you have to move the lick around a bit. So there are several chances for it go go off the rails. You keep it high and tight!!

Congrats Soldier! You just..

Well fought Soldier!! Playing with one hand is a tricky thing and you krushed it! It requires doing all of your musing as you are playing and if you hold up the guitar like you are doing it's the extra tricky version. Nice!!!

is this all down strokes?

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 24 2022, 05:42 AM

One strike and two hammer ons. I'm going through and redoing all the tablature since some of these were done a bit before I knew how to make good tabs smile.gif One strike and hammer on the other two notes.

Well Fought Soldier!! Your reach is on display here for sure. Also you have great pinky power! Without a good stretch and some strong pinkies, these licks fall apart quick. Your pacing is also very good. Everything is played evenly and smoothly. Nice!

Sorry for the Lag Soldier!! Shoot me a PM when you put one up just to make sure!! You have got this one sorted but for the string bleed. You have the pattern down! You have the quad picking down! But... I"m hearing more than one string resonating at a time which means the palm mute is not as strong as it needs to be. I want to hear only one string going at a time which means a very strong palm mute.

To wit!

check out this palm mute demo

One more time! Give it a stronger palm mute Soldier!

8 months of practice, i give up, here it is

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 16 2022, 07:20 AM

Nice!! This is what I'm looking for. The muting is much better here. This one doesn't work unless the muting is on point. Once you can mute and pick and move around, you really ready for what's next! To wit...

Congrats Soldier!! You just...

Well Fought!! There are a lot of bits to this mission and you have a good handle on them. It's a good combination of skills that that get tested on these and you have come a long way since way back in the day when i think some of these might have put your hands in a twist. Not so anymore!!! This is a LOT about single string work and thus forcing the hand to adjust on the neck rather than allowing it to simply traverse up the strings. Of course, we do a bit of traverse at the end to contrast the single string work.

Your picking, muting, sliding, pinky power, are all very solid and this serves as a good example of what can be achieved through determined effort. To wit!!

Congratulations Soldier, you just.....

LEVELED UP!!!!!!
