With yet a super tasty lesson by Jonathan - Steve Lukather Modern Style - I would like to ask you the following:

What do you prefer: solos that lean more towards a clean or distorted sound?

Well, all of my favourite solos are at least a bit distorted...IMO it's necessary to create a great solo, no matter if it's super-fast shredding or slow and emotional.

not too distorted, except some, mostly some distorted, but in a fashion that is pleasing, no shrill, except when clean, when I want it clean I don't want it distorted, unless I want is a little distorted, sort of.

I prefer distorted solos. However, that's not to say I don't enjoy clean solos. I have composed both distorted and clean solos; both of which are a humble creation. biggrin.gif Still learning to compose.

I like both as many have stated here. Always depends on context of course. Learning to solo without gain is an art in and of itself. It's really a different beast. It's a great thing to work out so that you can play without having to use tons of gain if a song doesn't call for it. I"ve played leads using accoustic guitars, classical guitars, and even my metal guitars without any gain on various projects, scores etc. It's always interesting to make a solo that works without using many of the tricks that are gain dependent. Sounds like a good idea for a collab smile.gif

Here is a tune I'm working on that features a clean solo section in two parts. In addition, two of the three harmony rythm guitar parts are clean. This thread gave me the though of stacking clean rythms against each other and using clean/undistorted leads. Give it a listen and let me know what you think smile.gif I'm also posting it without solos in case you guys want to try it.

This tune isn't the usual Metal/Thrash fair I so often post. Thought I'd stretch a bit and do something a bit more melodic. Enjoy!

I like clean solos for the punchy, headroomy effect. But there are numerous more things you can do with a distorted sound, especially for sucky people like me.

Kris has a great point here. The distortion does provide for a wealth of techniques and approaches that just don't work on clean solos. Clean solos for me, usually help provide counterpoint to the distorted passages and texture when played along with them. It's usually a stretch for me to play sans gain as I don't do it that often, but it's a great workout for creativity as it will force me to approach a solo without my usual bag of tricks.
