this is my pattern- starting at the a note-third string 14 th fret - in the key of e minor -b 12 th fret - c 13 th - d 15 th - e 12th fret 1 st string
f# 14 th fret and the g 15 th then i descend. this particular pattern is 16th triplets and i have worked out a few 16 ths around these notes as well and i start the pattern with an upstroke , play through it a few rounds and the switch to a down-stroke so that i am practicing inside and outside picking
the problem is sometimes i can play these at 180 bpm , 4 notes per beat but the majority of the time , i am struglling with these at
110 bpm four notes per click
i am so frustrated that sometimes i seem to be shredding while most of the time i can not
is this common among any others and if so ,
do you have any ideas that might help me get through it

if I am struggling at 110 , will increasing at 1 bpm and geting perfection be better than forcing sloppy playing but increasing more quickly and the slowing down to perfection yeild better results

Shoot a video of you playing this lick so we can see what you are talking about and we will be able to give you more constructive tips. Lots of little things have and impact on your speed. Pick choice, pick grip, angle of attack, instrument position, etc.

If you are playing near the edge of your ability, this is what I call the "stick point" your goal should be to create new stick points as you go by slowly overcoming your current stick point. With practice you can beat 110 and play smooth at 111. But if I can see a video of what you are doing, I can probably give you some tips that would help.

Try to make it to the video chat lesson this weekend and we will work on alternate picking for a couple of hours.

Todd
