There are so many variations of stringed instruments out there including with the guitar. Be sure to check out Denes new lesson, "12 String SRV", and then post a reply to today's question.

Have you ever played a 12 string acoustic? What are the advantages and disadvantages to them? Did your normal acoustic technique transfer well to the instrument?

I think 12 stringers are perfect for a one man show smile.gif
I tried one in a guitar shop last year (think it was a Walden) and played a simple foo fighters chord progression (strumming). It sounded somewhat large and fat - I liked it. So that worked for me - but when I started some fingerpicking it definitely didn't. Though left hand wasn't the problem.
For me:
Advantage: great sound for strumming - dynamics sound awesome, too.
Disadvantage: Fingerpicking-technique is hard to transfer to a 12 string..

I have an acoustic Ibanez 12-strings. It sounds great. You can play it like a 6-strings guitar. The main problem is the bending technique since you can't bend each couple of strings at exactly the same pitch. I think it sounds best for strumming and arpeggios sounds. Listend to great Hotel California by The Eagles to hear what I mean biggrin.gif
