Wireless Guitar Unit... Options

Just wanted to plug the Line6 Wirless units. I had some experience with a Shure wireless but I didn't like it all, even though the freedom and convenience are great, something about the tone was lacking, the sustain, etc. So after heavy debating I decided to give this Line6 unit a try, figured if I didn't like it I had 30 days to return it.

It's excellent, so if anyone has pondered purchasing a wireless unit for themself, try one of these out.

I have tried the G30 and I liked it. Normally the G50 would be better, right?

Now, my only fear with these devices, only relies in the fact that I'd lose tone to mobility. Pray tell us about your experiences in a live setting, ok?

Well, I'm not sure when or if I'll actually ever play live again, but just in the practice room I love it. I was going to get the G30, but my local Guitar Center didn't have one in stock, so I went with this one. You didn't use your G30 live? I'm interested in your experience with it.

That was one of similar reasons I wanted one but...as far as I use guitar volume pot a lot I';ve noticed some noise and noise gate behavior on extremely low vol pot set up...I mostly use clean tone from the knob while the distortion channel is turned on the amp. That's the only reason by far...but As soon as I get to my hands something that's more transparent at any vol pot position then..who knows...

My ultimate reasoning for wanting a wireless unit was home practice more than anything. In my setup I have a very small area to stand and play, and when I have headphones and the guitar cord, I find myself kicking the cord out of the way of the pedals, and the headphone cord either draping over the neck of the guitar or banging my arm from underneath. So having the wireless headphones and guitar offers much less hassle for me and things to concentrate on in the middle of a song.

I have not yet purchased the wireless headphones but I think I am going to go with the Sennheiser RS170s. They retail for $200.




Anyway, I started this thread because I know I went through much frustration with a wireless unit in the past that was a very good one at the time, and I have been completely thrilled with the performance of this one, so I figured there must be other guitarists that have been turned off by wireless as well, and wanted to give them hope that there was one out there that has, at this point, changed my perspective on them.

I can give +1 one for Sennheiser headpohnes. While I was looking for the best headphones for my home studio I found hd280 and they have a killer quality for the price - mainly the freq response + mid range quality close to good studio monitors..it's not a DJ thing...I even think DJ's would hate it but this was exactly what I was looking for.

Also...tested some wireless Sennheiser set for mic and acoustic and...worked good with acoustic but it was to sensitive for volume knob movements with electric...just different input circuit and...that's why I cannot judge their products comparing to electric guitar.

What is that thing he is carrying? Wireless unit to the guitar? That looks odd. I was imagining you have the "antenna" on the guitar jack input only (short). I would love to have one of those as there are just too many cables in my room.

Chandra, for recording and playing at home, in my opinion, a wireless unit is not a great choice. It doesn't justify the investment, only to be able to move around for 3-4 meters in a room. But when you are on a big stage and you move a lot, a cable can be hindering and thus a wireless unit is a helpful device. That's my thought tho

I feel you on the cables. But hey this is kinda what I did. My gear is pretty much behind me, so I run the headphone cable pretty much down my back. That way it doesn't naturally catch on anything moving as it's pretty contained being ran down the shirt. Then you really only battle the guitar cable which isn't so bad. Which if you mainly play that way, just run it up over the strap, maybe get a few velcro ties, put them on so the wires run together. So you only feel you are worrying about 1 cable not 2. Then run your guitar cable around the pedals to tie in neatly so that you shouldn't be always kicking the cable anyways.

Hah! While typing this. I was just thinking if you had a microphone stand make the wires sit up off the floor above the pedals! Bam! cables be gone!

I'm sure its a lot cheaper route than headphones/wireless setup for home playing.

It is a little expensive for just playing at home, and if I were just sitting at my desk it wouldn't be worth it. However the way I have it set up, and starting and stopping songs on the computer then going back to where I play them, the chord is always getting tangled on the volume pedal or somehow covering other pedals and my focus seems to be, during playing, on kicking the chord out of the way. Plus it is great when practicing as I prefer to stand on the other side of the room from my amp.

This isn't the only wireless thing I wanted, working with computers for a living, I have come to despise all wires, if something can be bluetooth or RF, and affordable, I'm all about it.

Indeed, if you won't be using it onstage, it really isn't worth buying just for home use. Why not find a way to arrange your cables in a tidy manner?
