GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Audioslave Style Collab
Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 11 2016, 02:09 PM
Hello friends!!
Welcome to our new collab!! But before we start, please check out the final video for the last one we've done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OymX3SaklSQ
This time I've recorded a backing track in the style of Audioslave, and once again GMC founder Kristofer Dahl will provide vocals!
We need your guitar solos, arrangements, chords, bass guitar, backing vocals or whatever you would like to add to this one!
Tempo: 95bpm
Chord progression & Scale choices:
Intro: Riff in E minor
Verse: (Em - D - G - A)
Chorus: Riff in E minor
Bridge: (Em - Dm - Am - C) + Riff in Em
Over the riffs you can use E pentatonic minor or E minor scales:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
Over the verse you can solo using E Pentatonic minor or E dorian
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
Over the bridge you should follow the chords with its triads, pentatonic. So you would play Em Pentatonic, then Dm Penta, then Am penta and finally C major penta. Experiment with this even if you are not used to solo using different scales, it's pure fun!
IF YOU NEED HELP TO USE ALL THIS INFO LET ME KNOW! I'M HERE TO GUIDE YOU.
IMPORTANT INFO About files required:
In order to make the things easier for compiling takes and mixing I need that each participant shares 3 files:
- Audio file with the mix of the backing and your guitar. - Audio file only with your guitar (If possible this audio should have the same length than the mix version) - Video of you playing the solo, and if it's not possible a picture. (Mp4 format if it's possible)
The best way to share this is compressing in a zip file to be downloaded from here or using sharing service as dropbox, wetransfer, and copying the link here.
If you decide to share your files using soundcloud please remember to "allow downloads".
Thanks!
DEADLINE: December 3rd

First a warning: I can leave absolutely no guarantee I will be able to sound anything like Chris Cornell at all. But it will be fun for sure. Who's in?!

I feel like I may have a winner again This is a GREAT track to jam to! I didn't video it again, because I'd like to expand the part and my camera is behind me when I'm working the wah. Anyway, I just wanted to get it recorded to share and so I wouldn't lose the idea. What do you think?

I plan to begin the tune with the ever so creative "yeah, yeah, yeah" - but spanning over two octaves (if I can pull it off).
Here are the draft lyrics:
Verse: Long ago when the sky was blue and the grass was green I fell in love I fell in love with a beauty (whispered: so mean)
Chorus: Now the grass pulls me under - it’s tearing me apart A cry from down under - as we learn to live apart
Bridge: When everything is said and done, I pull the trigger on my loved one And release the bird, we caged inside

Cool lyrics Kris! I can't wait to hear you singing it over the track! So you are going to experiment with really high Cornellish lines.

Ok Gab, my wah is starting to give me issues, so I need to ship it in for service. I recorded my riff and video, it's a bit short but I figured you could use it. Here's the preview and files, audio kicks in at around 0:05

I quite enjoyed the backing track so I tried to come up with a solo on this. Unfortunately I couldn't get the video in perfect sync with the audio.
Also there is a small audio stutter in the youtube video(at 0.03s), but not in the audio only files for some reason. I hope that this doesn't matter that much

Aye. Here is my vid and guitar only file. My part is louder just for listening. Although its pretty simple stuff and an effects part mostly.
This is pure greatness! I'm happy to have some Whammy parts for this collab. I think that it's a must for a Tom Morello inspired track!
Thank you Gene.

Thanks Gabriel.
I may play around with it some more. I found if I played a lot of notes it turned to mush or didn't mesh with the song. Probably because of my delay setting and delay tail. But its the holidays soon here and I knew I better get a track up before time was taken by family and merriment.
As usual it is a great Collab. Can't wait to hear Kris' vocals.

Yeah, also, when using Whammy, it's better to create melodies with a few long notes. That's what I prefer playing and hearing. Thanks again for joining this one.

Regarding your tone. I think that you could experiment with the EQ used. It's tricky to say what you have to change since there are lots of possibilities and maybe the best is to try different amps (if you are using emulators). I can say that your tone could sound warmer, there are some frequencies in the migh mid range (between 1.5 and 3 khz) that are a a bit disturbing for my ear. You can try lowering these frequencies, or maybe searching for an amp that doesn't make them sound strong.
I also think that a compressor could make this solo sound better, or maybe just more regular picking intensity. There are some notes in the end that can be head clearly.
By the way, we need this solo so even this version could work for the song! I can fix the issues with EQ and edition. But you also have time to fix it and record a new take.

Cool groove. All the heavy riff parts seem to be pretty well taken care of so I played some parts over only the chordal sections. Clean arpeggios and an E-bow part. No lead stuff. More 'atmosphere' than anything else. I did do one Wah part on bar 4 of the first riff sections. I do the same thing each time the sections repeat so by 1:25 you've heard it all from me. *I didn't cut and paste though so there are subtle variations throughout, especially with the E-bow and Wah parts.
I hate to say I am going to back out of participation of this collab. I had a hemorrhoidectomy today and I am in some of the friecest pain ever. I feel like someone shoved a blender blades up my ass and evidently this is going to last 5-6 days.
I went into this surgery thinking it was going to be a piece of cake. Enjoy a few nice relaxing days off comfortably numb on pain killers - but as it turns out I actually NEED them, which takes the fun out of it.
The good thing is I've actually started being motivated to play again, but I just can't sit in a chair, or stand for any period of time - having to lay on my side.
This takes "pain in the ass" to a whole new level. It's like I spent my first night in prison.
Here I am pre-surgery, looking very optimistic just after receiving a heavy dose of some sort of drug to calm my nerves.

Indeed man. That would be ideal, the only thing is this, to my absolute shock, has been the worse recovery experience I have ever gone through. If anyone ever tells you that having hemorrhoids removed is a walk in the park, do the world a favor and punch that fools nose through the back of their head.
I have never lived through so much pain in so many places at once in my life. To top it off you can't even go to the bathroom - for either reason. After the surgery I had to go back to the Emergency Room and spend 6 hours. Ugh, long story. But all that to say that I didn't celebrate Thanksgiving, I didn't even watch the entire Clemson game. One of those hurts that won't allow you to enjoy anything, laying down, sitting up, watching tv, playing a video game - nothing. All I could do was find a comfortable position and hope to stay that way for as long as possible.
I might go into work for a half day tomorrow. I just don't know how long i'll be able to sit at a computer chair. It's a great thing I have an empathetic, more than generous boss.
1 cool thing happened though. You know my friend's band, Kelen Heller. Well one of the guitarists decided to call it quits - he has come to loath the music industry. So he came over to visit me last week and wants to write music together. Finally, someone that I can count on not to change what style they want to do. He also enjoys writing songs exactly like I do, behind a computer, one part at a time, as opposed to organically.
I got your message - haven't decided whether to respond or not. Part of me just wants to forget the whole election cycle and concentrate on life. Happy and hopeful for Trump - but not worth arguing about with friends. To many other, more important and edifying things to focus on. Politics is not good for the spirit.

Here are my vocal files. I haven't done any mixing but hopefully Gab will get us a preliminary mix shortly. I will now focus on getting video recorded before the deadline.
* the chromatic descent at the end needs a dreamy type of effect (moving pan, phaser, chrous, filter, delay, fuzzy overdubs etc you name it)
Can't wait to see how this one turns out!

I'm sorry to say that I might have to pull out of this Collab. I really don't want to but I have 3 guitars I'm building for Clients that all need to be finished for delivery this weekend. They're all mostly finished apart from the Final Set-up which can be a bit time consuming.
Hopefully I'll be all good for the next one!!

I"m glad to hear you have found a guy willing to work on/near your term on music. I spent many years "doing it in the room" with the other guys and it's fun But I have also found that I can do it by myself as well and just email tracks back and forth. Provides a lot more flexibility. I hope it's productive and please do share with us what hapenns!

Hey Gabriel,
I hope i'm doing this right, and that you can download both of the tracks.
The hour became 10 minutes!! You are fast! Thanks a lot!

Wow!!! Sounds amazing Gab!! This one is going to be epic indeed!!! Sorry I had to pull out of this one! I've just finished delivering the last of the 3 guitars tonight.

Gab : Cool mix
Kris : I must say that when you started adding vocals the collabs became even more fun to be part of. This one is fantastic.
Sensible : Great guitars. I more traditional, so the middle one is stunning to me. Although I think the first one is very cool although I can;t see how sharp the horns are. Is some of it hidden in the foam or are they narrower with a big bottom?

Thanks mate! The middle one was one of my favourite builds this year and for a very nice guy too. The horns on the top one go out to quite a point, it's just a bit obscured by the foam. not sure if this pic makes it clearer. I should really have taken some of it out of the case. Unfortunately I only grabbed a few shots when I delivered it.

Well my friends - it's safe to safe the resulting track is something exceptionally cool!
I can sense our community is starting to set itself apart. We're musicians here, not shred wannabes. The music speaks for itself - this is fantastic:

Agreed mate. I also feel they have even higher instructional value, as we are creating real songs together. It's such a nice feeling to create music together - even though we are far away from each other.

Sweet track. Was a lot of fun. Great compilation.

Hey friends! This is totally awesome. There are no words to explain how much I've enjoyed mixing this track. It's the one that I've enjoyed the most since each submit was totally musical and added a lot to the track. Your takes make this song grow a lot, and the final results is a beautiful piece of music.
These kind of things make me really happy so I'd like to say THANKS A LOT to each of the participants, and off course special thanks and congrats to Kris for writing lyrics and singing on this song. As we suspected, you've provided Dahlish vocals that made this track very unique but at the same time, I still can get the vibes of first Soundgarden music.
I hope that this is the first step of a new level in GMC collabs. Let's keep making music!

Very cool!!! Love how this turned out I"ve not done a few of these as it just seems like I'm really not needed at this point. There are plenty of folks contributing very spiff bits and it's great to see I'm stepping back from these a bit to give everyone else a shot to shine for themselves and they are!!! Well done guys
Todd

What a unique and memorable collab, congrats everyone! GeneT95 your patches gave this song such a razor twist, and all the other solos too! \m/

Thanks Sid.
I think everyone created great segments that Gab fit into a Fabulous arrangement. I can never tell what I will find at the finish with so many parts, which is part of the fun. As it's always amazing.

I sat in awe watching this. Wow! You've all outdone yourselves.

I think that this is the collab that has more cuts, and audio edition and that's not because we had bad takes. All takes are great, and every take interacted well with the other, so it was really fun to go from one player to the other and then get back to the first one, and do this cuts each 1 or 2 measures.

I can only agree with the praise - our collabs are something completely unique. They wouldn't be what they are without each and everyone of you!

Thatnks Gab!! It sounds as good as it looks. It has custom hand wound Pickups, a P90 in the neck and a very special humbucker in the Bridge. It has one coil overwound and the other coil normally wound so that you can use either coil on it's own for two different sounds. If I recieve any vids I'll be sure and post them!
