I just posted this to David and Kris and David thought I should post it here so here is my idea for the points system or a foundation for its working.

Hey,

I love your idea for the points given for completed lessons. Just some pointers that I think may be useful. I think you need to split members of the site into 3 categories first (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced). This is so Advanced people can't just learn 3 rated lessons and build up masses of points in days. A beginner should tackle lessons with a difficulty of 1 to 4, an intermediate from 4 to 7 and an advanced from 7 to 10 to get maximum points available for that lesson with a perfect take. If an advanced member tackles a lesson which is intermediate lower bound 4-6 then he'd only get 50% of the points if he mastered the lesson. If an intermediate tackled a lesson that was 1-3 he'd only get 50% of the points. If an advanced person nails a 9 or 10 difficulty lesson I think he should get a bonus of 50% of the points. In an intermediate masters a lesson that is 7 or higher he should get a 50% point bonus and if a beginner masters a lesson 4 or above he should get a bonus of 50%. To make it even as an advanced member mastering a level 10 lesson should be the same as a beginner mastering a level 4 lesson there should be a generic points total as below.

Beginner

Difficulty 1 - 4 points
Difficulty 2 - 6 points
Difficulty 3 - 8 points
Difficulty 4 - 10 points

Intermediate

Difficulty 4 - 4 points
Difficulty 5 - 6 points
Difficulty 6 - 8 points
Difficulty 7 - 10 points

Advanced

Difficulty 7 - 4 points
Difficulty 8 - 6 points
Difficulty 9 - 8 points
Difficulty 10 - 10 points

If a Beginner masters 10 difficulty 4 lessons he should raise to Intermediate status and a small prize of some sorts

If an Intermediate masters 10 difficulty 7 lessons he should raise to Advanced status and a small prize of some sorts

If an Advanced masters 10 difficulty 10 lessons he should win a large prize

Then when competing a lesson the jury grades on quality up to 100% which gets all the points. The average from all the jury is taken and this goes into points. So the average is taken of the points on offer. So some examples.

If an advanced member does a difficulty 7 lesson and he gets an average of 25% then he'll get 1 point
If he gets a strange average of say 32% he'll still only get 1 point. He needs to get 50%-74% to get 2 points. This will encourage strong takes to improve. And 75% to 90% will get 3 points. The final 90%+ will get 100% just because you can't be perfect.

This makes a fair system I believe and is kind of my mini proposal to help out with this as I feel strongly that this can really help the students here at GMC reach their goals and have a clear view of their improvement.

I hope you like the idea,
Paul

Of course there are a few bits that may need changing but I think it works on the whole. This idea tries to encourage people to improve rather than to learn lessons that they can play in 3 or 4 minutes of learning. This isn't beneficial. And in theory an advanced guitarist should be able to learn a lesson 10 as well as a true beginner can learn a lesson with difficulty 4.

Yeah, I like that idea a lot too.
Not sure what steps to take to get it done though...

Probably a first step is to establish an audition into one of the three categories - Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. People can apply to whichever they believe they are in. Have an instructor do three lessons for people to record. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Then evaluate what their skill set is based on their audition.

Instructors will know where to place them and should be able to determine if they are truly in the category that they are applying to. Then upon completion, give them some sort of a mark for their avatar or whatever that qualifies them to compete in certain challenges.

So as a staring point, have the instructors who are interested in this decide what existing lessons are appropriate at the various levels or even create new ones specifically for this purpose.

I think it's a really cool idea. Before I start pointing out some weaker points, let me tell you I really like the idea very very much! Now the But part...

-In the past we had more of these kinda ideas being implented. Often people liked the idea, but in the end they didn't really use it! To make sure this is really used, you should make this project seen very often. You need to find a way to get every one to take part!
-Second point, there are always members who want to get competitive, but not on a cool way. You can't say if someone is beginner/intermediate/advance, the only one who can is the person himself. Now an Advanced player could say he's beginner and then do 9 levels 4 and 60 lever three lessons and get a whole lot of points! I also think that a beginner in the range of level 3 or 4 has an easier job getting point then a beginner in the 1-2 range! A big thingie here is that lots of members say they are beginner, but when I watch their movies, they must be at least intermediate! People underestimate themselfs!
-last point, try to simplify it a bit. If you have to posts movies or soundclips of you playing the lesson, then that's great because we can check whether someone really is able to play the lesson, but on the other hand it creates an excuse not to join in this project. Just playing it and clicking "I can play this" is way simpler then having to make an MP3 recording, after finding a way to download the BT!

I hope this was understandable and helpful...

There are things that need to be clarified for sure, but I like the idea that instructors will be judging this and classify students by their level.

That is only in the student's benefit, as working on lessons fitting your level will make you progress faster.
That really would be the best benefit I think of that idea. Besides maybe offering little gifts for the number of points attained, the most rewarding price would be to really improve and have more of a focused dedicated studying time.

This could be linked to the MTP program that recently started...
