I just posted this to David and Kris and David thought I should post it here so here is my idea for the points system or a foundation for its working.
Hey,
I love your idea for the points given for completed lessons. Just some pointers that I think may be useful. I think you need to split members of the site into 3 categories first (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced). This is so Advanced people can't just learn 3 rated lessons and build up masses of points in days. A beginner should tackle lessons with a difficulty of 1 to 4, an intermediate from 4 to 7 and an advanced from 7 to 10 to get maximum points available for that lesson with a perfect take. If an advanced member tackles a lesson which is intermediate lower bound 4-6 then he'd only get 50% of the points if he mastered the lesson. If an intermediate tackled a lesson that was 1-3 he'd only get 50% of the points. If an advanced person nails a 9 or 10 difficulty lesson I think he should get a bonus of 50% of the points. In an intermediate masters a lesson that is 7 or higher he should get a 50% point bonus and if a beginner masters a lesson 4 or above he should get a bonus of 50%. To make it even as an advanced member mastering a level 10 lesson should be the same as a beginner mastering a level 4 lesson there should be a generic points total as below.
Beginner
Difficulty 1 - 4 points
Difficulty 2 - 6 points
Difficulty 3 - 8 points
Difficulty 4 - 10 points
Intermediate
Difficulty 4 - 4 points
Difficulty 5 - 6 points
Difficulty 6 - 8 points
Difficulty 7 - 10 points
Advanced
Difficulty 7 - 4 points
Difficulty 8 - 6 points
Difficulty 9 - 8 points
Difficulty 10 - 10 points
If a Beginner masters 10 difficulty 4 lessons he should raise to Intermediate status and a small prize of some sorts
If an Intermediate masters 10 difficulty 7 lessons he should raise to Advanced status and a small prize of some sorts
If an Advanced masters 10 difficulty 10 lessons he should win a large prize
Then when competing a lesson the jury grades on quality up to 100% which gets all the points. The average from all the jury is taken and this goes into points. So the average is taken of the points on offer. So some examples.
If an advanced member does a difficulty 7 lesson and he gets an average of 25% then he'll get 1 point
If he gets a strange average of say 32% he'll still only get 1 point. He needs to get 50%-74% to get 2 points. This will encourage strong takes to improve. And 75% to 90% will get 3 points. The final 90%+ will get 100% just because you can't be perfect.
This makes a fair system I believe and is kind of my mini proposal to help out with this as I feel strongly that this can really help the students here at GMC reach their goals and have a clear view of their improvement.
I hope you like the idea,
Paul
Of course there are a few bits that may need changing but I think it works on the whole. This idea tries to encourage people to improve rather than to learn lessons that they can play in 3 or 4 minutes of learning. This isn't beneficial. And in theory an advanced guitarist should be able to learn a lesson 10 as well as a true beginner can learn a lesson with difficulty 4.
