Hey Alex, thanks , I'm really excited to have you as a mentor cause you're so good in understanding music and teaching music theory.
My goal is to write really good hard rock / heavy metal riffs and incorporate them with really cool smooth, yet aggresive melodic phrases and to add personal feel to solos , and also to play it all successfully smile.gif

My weakness is that i can't do those things i explained above ohmy.gif biggrin.gif I can play a solo , but it would sound too classic, not too much unique sound that i wanna do, to build my own personal, recognizeable style .

My strongest point is that i think i'm technically ready for this, yet i need more theory approach, i can play all 7 major modes , but don't know how to converge them into some blistering phrases rolleyes.gif I don't need to know much about arpeggios, would be good to know few of them , but not to choke solos to exaggerate while playing them.

I like the freedom in Steva Vai's playing
Smoothnes and attack of Gary Moore in 80's
Harmony of Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy
Feeling and vibrato of David Gilmour
Inasane sound of Yngwie's strat,
Use of Exotic scales by Marty Friedman
Groove of Dimebag Darell (Pantera)
...

I am really happy to have you on board smile.gif
Let's start!
Here is the track that we will be using
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/ii-v-i-jam
It's a standard II-V-I progression in E minor
So the chords are Emi7 - A7 -Dmaj7
To start I would like you to take three pentatonics in this shapes:

B minor

E minor

F# minor

And combine them together creating licks!
Its a very important exercise if you want to develop your own style!
I am not gonna provide with an example because I would like to hear what you will come up with on your own!
Let me know if you need any help or have questions!

Hello Mr Alex, here's my take, i messed it up a lot , i know , but i've never really played funky music , so maybe it's not so bad smile.gif

http://youtu.be/L2jWThCbDic

I have one question, Why did I played B minor , E minor and F # minor over those three chords ( Emi7 - A7 -Dmaj7 ) ?>??

Thanks in advance,

You did a very nice job! I can suggest to keep it less busy and do quality notes instead of quantity if you know what I mean!
You played those three pentatonics because all of them are coming from the same key! D major!
If you know the key you can play three pentatonics over it is:
II - III - VI
All the minor modes! smile.gif Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian
that's why those pentatonics will work!

Ok man, i've listened to a lot of Yngwie and similar guitarists, and they're always busy smile.gif
Maybe if you gave me some Heavy metal or Hard Rock backing track i would give it a better shot, because i was'nt listening to a lot of funky music.
So can i play E maj B maj and F# pentatonics over D major key as you said i can play all these in minor ?

Yes you can play all three pentatonics and they will work!
Just try to build it up that's all I am asking! Even Malmsteen building up his solos! So you can do it too!!!
Give it a try and if it doesn't work I will give you a different track!

It is a little weird but it will work! Trust me smile.gif
Your fingering is fine! Next week we will start working on more melodic assignments!
Keep practicing this exercise for a few more days and let me know how it goes!

Hello! So I have a new assignment ready! We will get into improvisation a little bit more!
Here is the track
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/slavenko
I did my first solo based on A minor pentatonic and I would like you to create a response! Try to continue my idea and be as melodic as you can!
Also after mixing your guitar please leave the rest of the track playing so I can continue
When you will be making a response use the same shapes as I did!

Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

You did a good job! But went too far smile.gif It should have been only one round through 12 bars! For the first part try to be less busy the whole point of this exercise is that we will develop it together! And will shred towards the end smile.gif Also You were rushing a little bit so try to play behind holding yourself back! I have plenty of exercises that can help you with your timing so if you need those let me know smile.gif
I liked your sound and your touch is very nice! I think a little bit of work and you will sound brilliant!

Good take! I like it a lot! You kept it less busy and had a very nice idea!
Now I would like you to combine a few things smile.gif
When you are playing over E7 use E minor pentatonic
When A7 comes in switch to A minor pentatonic you will hear a interesting change in a sound!
I will record what I mean tomorrow and will post it here! smile.gif
Those are positions
E minor

A minor

Let the rock On Beginn!!

Strong notes are the chord tones! Those are the notes that you can resolve in.
Let's look at the chords:
E7 - A7 - B7

E7
E - G# - B - D

A7
A - C# - E - G

B7
B - D# - F# - A

I have a new exercise for you!
Try to jam over the backing track I gave you and use only the chord tones!
If you can make a recording of what you came up with would be great!
This is a great exercise that will also help you to play over the changes in the future!
Let me know if you have any questions!
